Mine has been working fine for 24 hours now. Library on a USB stick as adoptive storage, everything else stock after a factory reset. Did a large library metadata restart which worked fine
Hoping it stays this way

Do you have your usb settings to not go on selective suspend in the power settings?
I have both of my USB ports set to Always On; is that what you’re referring to?
Crashed overnight after installing 9.0.1…
Yeah that is what I was referring to. Seems ok for me after the update but who knows, may all go wrong again
Like mentioned before, both NTFS and exFAT filesystems are having issues with the new Android 11. Only FAT32 is working stable. NVidia is working on that one.
I have my PMS on Shield with 9.01 version running for more then a week without any issues.
My Media data is stored on my NAS (around 16TB) and the PMS database and stuff are stored on my external USB SSD formatted with FAT32.
You can also try to connect your external NTFS/exFAT disks to another machine (windows, Mac, Linux) and create network share so you can add a network share on NVidia Shield and change the location(s) in your Plex. Should work just fine.
There is a new hotfix for 9.0.1 available that should help the system crash/hang while using external hard drives with NFTS/exfat format.
This should really help us: A lot of the random freezing/hanging for folks who are using removable storage (ntfs/exfat) and folks who report Plex/Kodi works fine until they start scanning data and then things go offline/crash/hang, are likely caused by the Paragon issue.
They are still working on the speed issue (as confirmed by developer on reddit: The first 9.0.1+ HotFix image has deployed : ShieldAndroidTV (reddit.com))
First HotFix (33.1.0.291 deployed 2/16/2022) :
Resolves Paragon files system crash/hang while using external hard drives with NTFS/exfat format
Fixes a cec issue where shield won’t go to sleep
Resolves issue where adopted storage starts migrating but doesn’t always complete
Resolves issue with mouse click not working
Resolves issue where Samba Mac client getting error when copying file to USB Hard-Drive
Resolves issue where Playback status shows up on home screen even after exiting an app
Resolves issue of framework restart while enabling Dolby Vision on Phillips TV
After installing 9.0.1 + Hotfix you should apply again to get further hotfixes (after every hotfix you have to do this).
This can be done here: NVIDIA SHIELD TV Software Upgrade 9.0.1+ HotFix Image (google.com)
Ok. New hotfix sounds like it will solve my NTFS external hard drive problems. Will try it out and report back.
Sounds like good news. Fingers crossed it works.
Thx, I missed the part that the 9.0.1 was a official new release and not a hotfix.
Signed up again for the hotfixes for 9.0.1 so hopefully i can test again tomorrow.
The issue is with Plex, the last PMS was from January 5. Plex should push out an update. PMS still cannot detect external storage (NTFS)
Don’t get your hopes up… it did not fix any issues with Plex/PMS. It did however, fixed most of Shield experience. All apps seems to run smooth now other than Plex. VLC still has some issues displaying the proper file titles, but plays every media I’ve tried.
For me, the shield experience fix all the problem I had.
My server was also on an external storage.
Actually that is not true.
If you installed the hotfixes your external usb disk will show up in Plex version regardless of which filesystem is used (ntfs, exFAT or fat32)
I believe since hotfix 2 they released a new PMS version which is 1.25.3.5448.
Point was that exFAT and ntfs did not work stable and made PMS crash as soon as any library scan was started
I am glad for those impacted that they are making progress (also happy for myself since I would like to eventually upgrade both Shield Experience and PMS once they are stable/ 9.0.0 / Android 11 / PMS 1.24 / 1.25 issues have been resolved).
For now I am waiting (I am on Shield Exp 8.x and PM 1.23.x) since I have 2 concerns even with the new 9.0.1 + 9.0.1 hotfix:
Plex hardware transcoding issue, which is present in PMS 1.24 and 1.25, given 1.25 is bundled with Shield Experience 9(.0.1).
However (and maybe Plex can confirm this again), I believe, based on a recent post I read from Plex, that HW transcoding works on Plex clients, just not under all scenarios on the Shield itself.
If so, that is okay with me for now since I am not using the Shield itself as a client / a media playback device. Rather, I am using my Shield TV Pro as a server with attached NTFS USB storage and use clients such as 3 Roku Ultra units, several other Roku 3 units for the non-4K TVs, and lastly built-in app on one of the Smart TVs).
Shield file transfer speeds are very slow since 9.0.0; this is a known issue that is not fixed in the first 9.0.1 hotfix image per Nividia known issues list for 9.0.1 and release notes for 9.0.1. 1st hotfix. Hopefully that will be fixed soon…
I’d really like for both companies to come up with an official release for both of their buggy products. I am really not into beta testing anything for free. I purchased the software and I purchased the device. My mistake was to update the Shield Experience thinking it was a good thing. Even running the shield sans PMS is a joke. Brings back a lot of bad memories. So anyways, have a g’day mates.
Hi all, first time poster here, and seem to be having much the same issues as everyone else.
My setup is a Shield TV Pro 2019 running PMS, using a Samsung Bar Plus 128gb, with all my media stored on a Synology 920+
Started last night for me, found I wasn’t able to access PMS from any of my devices, and PMS on Shield was playing up intermittently (sometimes there, sometimes not). I tried rebooting the Shield but that didn’t make a difference. Today I tried uninstalling the PMS updates, then completely reformatting the Shield and starting from scratch but now PMS won’t even setup - keeps telling me setup failed, try again. Also now the Shield isn’t recognising my USB drive. I ended up setting up PMS on my Synology, but I have a few people who remote access it and it doesn’t seem to be running as smooth from the Synology (plus the remote access keeps dropping out and I can’t work out why).
I’ve read a few posts in here (not all 1237 of them) but a lot of the reasoning for it and potential fixes is beyond me, so in the words of Michael Scott “why don’t you explain it to me like i’m five”
EDIT: I rebooted the Shield and it’s recognising the USB stick, and it’s progressed past the “setup failed, try again” stage of PMS, but is now at the “Plex Media Server is starting for the first time, please wait…” stage where it sits there and spins but doesn’t do anything
try to delete plex server via file manager x-pro app and then install plex server
I edited my post the same time as you sent that, to say it’s progressed but now sitting at starting for the first time.
Would completely removing it and re-installing help anything or will I just encounter this again?
