My question is I am one of the users that stayed on the old version of the Shield experience and have yet to even touch moving to version 9. My Plex has remained stable thus far on the old version. At some point, I expect I will have to update (new features, security, etc). What are peoples thoughts around finally jumping in and updating? 2 months? 6 Months?
When you see in this post that everything is solved and no more complains arrive
id say when you see a shield stable release and you see 90% less complaints about it. or when there next stable release has less than 25 known issues ha.
I get it but how can you explain that it’s been stable for a couple weeks and now it’s all fu***ed up again ? It’s crashing every night like two months ago …
How can i not be mad when i bought something that used to work and now i’m screwed and have no other way to make it work easily ??? …
Its fine to be mad, but you also have to be realistic. Until nvidia pushes out a final, non-hotfix to ALL Shields, you need to expect issues. Myself, I haven’t gotten a 9.01 or 9.02. Nvidia is working on it, and for every update Nvidia does, Plex has to do some work, QA, beta, etc. Its going to be a long process because it just isn’t that big of a deal to Nvidia. Plex is trying, but they can only respond. And Nvidia is known for being difficult for anyone to work with unless you are a video card manufacturer.
New PMS update to day.
Still doesn’t appears in settings

Update 9.0.2 just dropped for me today. Hear we go…
Any update on how it’s gone?
Looking good. Kept running overnight playing on all devices, recording live live TV through plex. Moving around shield UI is smooth didnt used to be. Just hope this is the end to it Also hope plex / nvidia have learned lessons. PLEX if your listening you need to improve your communication when have a issue like this. Even if you dont have the answer just to say your working on it. The users are a great resource who want to help and improve things.
PS I’m still awaiting a reply back from Jenson, ![]()

Based on the release notes, it does not include any improvement to the main issue that would prevent me from upgrading to it - file transfer speeds still not being what they were with Shield Experience 8.x
That is aside from the Hardware transcoding not working.
Still on Shield Experience 8 and PMS 1.23.x and Plex with that combination works GREAT.
Just hoping, still, that the following TWO things happen in the near future, so I can safely update my Shield TV Pro and know I am ready for future enhancements (till then I am sticking with Shield Experience 8.x.x and PMS 1.23.x):
-
nVidia needs to address the file transfer speed issues with Shield Experience 9 (they improved it in one of the 9.0.x updates / 9.0.x hot fixes, but several folks saying speeds are not what they were before).
-
Plex needs to fix the Hardware Transcoding being broken in PMS 1.25.x.
(Not sure any of my clients need transcoding since most are newer / powerful, but I sometimes stream Plex content when I away from home on other client devices that I do not own).
At first things looked a lot better since the 9.0.2 hotfix update.
My Plex no longer crashed Shield 2019 Pro and I have access back to my Plex databases located on my external USB SSD in the /Android/data/* folders.
I watched a few 4K HDR 7.1 films which are stored on my NAS and it worked perfectly.
But then I realized those were all DTS-HD MA 7.1 audio tracks (shown as DTS-X Neural on my Denon receiver).
When I tried another movie with 4K HDR and a TrueHD 7.1 Atmos audio track it seemed to play just fine but after about 3-5min it started to stutter and got worse until I could not continue and when I stopped the movie Plex crashed to the Home Screen of my Shield.
However if I play the exact same movie using Kodi 19.3 it played without any stutter or issues. But I just don’t like Kodi and loved Plex much more! Much better user experience and options … until now that is ![]()
So I seems this is Plex specific on (my) Shield 2019 Pro.
Plex version is latest v1.25.8.5663
And Shield firmware on 9.0.2 v33.1.0.319
see the other thread about truehd atmos issues is the latest releases of plex players. It is a known issue that is being worked on / diagnosed.
Possibly unrelated to the hotfix as others have the issue that never upgraded to shield experience 9.
Yeah just found it couple of hours ago.
Thx.
Gonna try beta version 9 or maybe downgrade to older version.
Just to test some things.
Hopefully this will soon be fixed
Arghhh.
My 2018 Shield was running okay with the second hot fix… only thing that was missing was HW transcoding (and overall speed improvement, but I gave up on that because tech just gets slower with updates).
After installing Hotfix 3, my network transfer speed plummeted, and often times it would tell me I don’t have permission when I paste a file. When I try to go into the drive again, it would say that Windows can’t access the drive and it may be corrupted. Of course, that same file, not even transferred, would somehow disappear from my PC.
The shield remote app on iOS would also frequently disconnect as well.
Has anyone had success with downgrading to Shield Experience 8 (Android 9) and then using an older version of PMS?
I’m a little nervous to do it, and it sounds like it’ll take the better part of a day to go through all the steps… Also, does anyone have a link to instructions for this from a Linux desktop rather than Windows?
I have installed hotfix 3 and my Plex server reappeared, briefly! it has now disappeared again and no number of shield reboots will bring it back.
Ahhhhhggghhh this has been months now……
There have been so many problems with PLEX since the Shield update and its been going on so long, I cannot tell if this issue has been experienced by others and if there is a potential fix out there?
I had all of the original problems everyone else had right after the original update. I installed a couple of the hotfixes, but have not upgraded to the 9.0.1. Partly because everything has been working fairly well without the latest upgrade…after all, let’s not fix it if it ain’t broken.
Now I am having a new issue. My movies show in their folder and everyone I’ve tried has played. My TV Shows and Home Videos used to show in their respective libraries and played well too, until about a week ago or so. Now PLEX on my shield does NOT show ONLY my series and home videos. It shows the original message that I need to add the libraries from the web app. However, when I go into the web app, all of my TV shows and home videos are there and play just fine…They just don’t show on the Shield which is not helpful at all.
Has anyone gone through this and discovered a fix?
Thanks
I did about a week after the initial release, running shield experience 8 + pms 1.24 .
Works perfectly, hw encoding included.
The whole downgrade process is a pain though.
