Shows Missing from Recently Released Episodes

Server Version#: 1.26.1.5798
Player Version#: all I’ve tried

I have noticed (for quite some time) that when I add the most recent episode of a show that is in a high season number (e.g. S17 and up for sure, perhaps it starts earlier) that recently released episodes are NEVER included in the Recently Released Episodes list on my home page.

Series that have not had so many seasons always show up as soon as I add the latest episode. For some reason, Plex doesn’t seem to believe that long running shows have any recently release pisodes. For example: earlier today I added the latest episode of NCIS (S19E20) to my server – it was detected and shows as the most recently added episode in shows from the 2000s (my TV libraries are by decade) but not in the Recently Released Episodes.

Obviously this isn’t a showstopper, but it is puzzling and annoying. Especially for my elderly parents who don’t always remember that they need to search around to see what’s new because Plex won’t always show them – and they are the people I’m adding the shows for!

Hmm… That’s not my experience:

These two series are well above the threshold you suggest.

Note: These are being recorded by Live TV & DVR to a dedicated DVR library.

Interesting. Mine are recorded elsewhere and copied onto the plex server. Perhaps that matters? Regardless, I cannot recall a time when I saw the previous night’s NCIS (or Murdoch Mysteries) appear in the Recently Released Episodes list, but they both always appear at the Most Recently Added in my “The 2000s” TV library. Shows from “The 2010s” and “The 2020s” libraries always appear in the Recently Released Episodes list. [Edit: I was wrong. It looks like only shows from my “The 2020s” library are appearing in the Recently Released Episodes list. I’ve been searching, but I cannot find a setting to include/exclude a library from one of the home screen lists, except by unpinning the library from the Home screen’s library list. All of my TV Show libraries are in pinned to the Home screen list, so that isn’t it. But… “The 2020s” is the first TV Show library in the list (i.e. at the top.) I wonder if Plex is “giving up” on building the Recently Released list after looking at the first TV Show library it encounters? If so, that would seem to be a bad thing.]

Maybe there’s a setting I have wrong in the 2000s library that prevents episodes from being eligible for the Recently Released list? I thought I had them all the same, except for source folder, but I may have messed up. [Edit: Nope, all settings exactly the same, sigh.]

Hopefully it won’t require the Plex Dance for the entire series or library to correct this! [Edit: The dance didn’t work for only a single episode, but I didn’t really think it would.] [Edit2: the dance didn’t work for the entire NCIS series, either.]

I found a copy of the latest simpsons and downloaded it. Then I fixed the metadata in the file and ran it through Handbrake’s “Roku 720p” conversion. Finally, I created a “The Simpsons” folder in my “The 1980s” TV Show Library. Here’s the result after the server activity settled down:

So, it seems that I’m only getting Recently Released from a single TV Show library and possibly from my Live TV/DVR Library, but I don’t have a tuner to test that – Hmmm… maybe I should put the Simpsons episode there … Nope.

All of these episodes are in the Recently Released lists within their respective libraries, just not on the Home screen’s, list.

I should probably just make one huge TV Show library. From the way folks here have been urging me to avoid multiple libraries and multiple folders per library, I’m starting to believe that Plex simply doesn’t work right with more than one library of each type, with one content folder for each library. There goes any hope of organizing my own files. Sigh.

It’s been a month and no comment from any Plex developers – that is quite surprising. Are they even bothering to monitor bug reports any more?
