Recently did a metadata refresh on my TV library and found that the following shows are missing entirely from the Plex database, although they are present in both TVDB and TMDB:
Missing as in do not exist at watch.plex.tv, which is the aggregated internal database Plex uses to match things. Try doing a metadata refresh on those shows and see what happens. They also must have been in the database at some point, because they matched fine about seven months ago when I switched to the new scanner and did my initial metadata refresh.
I’m sure you know all this, but when you do a metadata refresh on stuff that had previously been matched, it doesn’t unmatch the entire show if there is a discrepancy in the metadata. What it will do, though, is mark individual episodes as unmatched. This happens whether a show is in the Plex database or not. It’s then up to the user to figure out what happened. In my case, on this refresh it had only unmatched about 600 episodes out of a total of 120k+. Not bad at all, actually. I was able to fix a few shows manually, either by editing the episodes to match the current TVDB, or by doing the Plex Dance. Those three mentioned above I have been unable to fix, and I figured this is because they aren’t in the Plex DB at all.
For Hillside at least, try changing the episode ordering to “The Movie Database (Aired)” in the show’s advanced settings. This allows it to pull limited metadata, at least on my test files.
Will have to try that again, also. You guys know how quickly things change on both TVDB and TMDB. It’s a huge mess, especially when it come to specials. Pretty much every metadata refresh I have to edit things. The Plex guys are not to blame for this, though. It’s just the nature of anyone being able to edit on those sites. What I don’t get is why they don’t simply certify and lock the shows that are entirely done. I do see that very rarely on TVDB.
What bugs the crap out of me is that lately on TVDB they won’t allow specials created after a show ended any longer. This is also not consistent, though…
doku, while you’re at it, could you please also check Snuff Box? TVDB currently has two entries, Search - TheTVDB.com, but the first one should be the correct and permanent one. Perhaps TMDB also links to the wrong one here.
Okay so the easy stuff. The external ids linked from TMDB to TVDB for the following shows where incorrect and I’ve fixed them so they go to the correct records.
It will take 24-48 hours for the plex backend system to pickup these changes.
@VBB I agree with your assessment on Snuff Box, the second one (Snuffbox - TheTVDB.com) looks like a dup and should be deleted.
Now, the somewhat hard stuff. Fury Files on TMDB does not have much episode data and the ordering looks different to TVDB. I’ll need to investigate this one and see what is the CORRECT aired order as changing this on TMDB can get you into trouble if your not careful. I’ll come back to that when I have some time. However, regardless with the correct external id I fixed above plex should consolidate the metadata now anyhow.
Breakthrough looks to be missing an entire season on TMDB, basically this one from TVDB (Breakthrough - Aired Order - Season 2016 - TheTVDB.com) and also the seasons are named differently. I’ll likely not do anything with that show as I don’t know it and will just leave it up to someone else who does. I have however linked the Season 1 episodes on TMDB to TVDB (Breakthrough S1E1 (2015) - Changes — The Movie Database (TMDB) as an example) but this show needs a bit more work beyond my knowledge of it.
