Impossible to get a match for one of my shows over multiple years, even though the metadata is available and up to date on theTVDB

Server Version#: 1.25.6.5577

This has been an ongoing problem that I would like resolved once and for all. I have also submitted the question to theTVDB.

I use Plex Server to manage shows at home and I cannot seem to get it to match with Insight (1999) (Show identifier 92691) for metadata.

https://thetvdb.com/series/insight-1999

It seems that it will match with anything but the above show. Here are some examples of what it matches with instead:

https://thetvdb.com/series/real-ghost-stories
https://thetvdb.com/series/insight-2019
https://thetvdb.com/series/insight

In the match search box on Plex, even searching with the show identifier tvdb-92691 also comes back with no results.

I have had this problem for multiple years now. I usually do manual workarounds but I thought I should bring it to your attention and resolve it properly.

I don’t generally have this problem with other show titles. This show is behaving very strangely compared to all of my others. Could there be an indexing issue with this one?

I happen to also be the person who updates the Insight (1999) page that I want to match with.

My file naming standards fit the criteria for a match.

Thanks in advance for any assistance you can give!

Can you please do a screen capture from File Explore, showing everything from the root of your TV Library all the way down to an episode?

The path:

(The library points straight to the I folder

A filename: Insight.1999.S2022E01.20220215.Growing.Older.Loving.Life.720p.HDTV.x264-CBFM.mkv

The whole path in text:
H:\I\Insight (1999)\Insight.1999.S2022E01.20220215.Growing.Older.Loving.Life.720p.HDTV.x264-CBFM.mkv

Plex Documentation → Your Media
→ Naming & Organizing Your Movie Files
→ Naming & Organizing Your TV Show Files

Rename to align with Plex documentation.
After renaming/reorganizing, Plex Dance the entire show.

H:\I\
...\Insight (1999) {tvdb-92691} <-- ID optional, but helps.
......\Season 2022 <--"Season" in English.
.........\Insight (1999) s2022e01 Growing Older Loving Life [720p.etc].mkv
  • Drop the date, 20220215, from the file name.
  • Add a season folder.
  • Put resolution, etc in square brackets so Plex will ignore it.

Using Jellyfish Bitrate Test Files in lieu of actual files:

Thanks, but to be fair, that hasn’t even worked for you - it is still matching with the wrong show.

NB: It has also never been necessary for me to do all of this extra renaming, inserting square brackets, extra folder layers etc. I have thousands of other shows that work perfectly using the exact same simple, clean structure as I have used here.

The issue is matching the show itself, not sorting/matching the episodes.

How so?

You want to match this show:

Look at the episode names. They match for season 2022.

It is very possible that thetvdb or themoviedb.org have incorrect info. That is not uncommon.

TheTVDB will correct things, but we have to tell them what to correct.

Thank you for trying to help with my problem. But the show you have found in your result is not the correct show. I have provided a link to the correct show in my original post. If you go to that link you will see that it is a different one to the one your filenaming found. I also listed the one you found in my list of incorrect links.

I also mentioned in my post that I am the person that maintains the series on TVDB. I know my naming matches because I keep it up to date every week. theTVDB has correct info, under the correct show page.

I see what you mean with the episode titles but the graphic you have indicates to me that you’ve matched with the wrong one. Check out this link:
https://thetvdb.com/series/insight-2019

If you look at the graphics on the correct one, the poster you have is not there.
https://thetvdb.com/series/insight-1999

Edited to add - this crossover of data from the two pages indicates to me that there is some kind of indexing problem.

This is what it should look like:

Yes. Plex is mixing shows.

It looks like it is also picking up information from this entry:
Insight (TV Series 1995- ) — The Movie Database (TMDB), which looks like it has bad information - the cover art from Insight (2019) in Portuguese but identifies it as broadcast in Australia (SBS network).

I do not see an entry in themoviedb for Insight (1999), the show you want.

I think this is how things should match up:

Insight (1999)
https://thetvdb.com/series/insight-1999
No match on themoviedb.org.
Edit: Here’s the match, but it has no details: https://www.themoviedb.org/tv/36640-insight-au

Insight (2019)
https://thetvdb.com/series/insight-2019
https://www.themoviedb.org/tv/6559-insight

Does that seem correct to you?

Yes, that’s an interesting pickup. I hadn’t been looking at tmdb because it’s not a movie, so…

On the server end, I switched quite a while back to the Plex series search tool. It doesn’t seem like it is working very well in this case. You’d think it would look at the show result that has the most data or something. Or at least would find the tvdb page when I put in the show specifier.

It’s also really weird to me that this show always used to match with “Real Ghost Stories” of all things.

It still feels to me like it’s probably a Plex searching/indexing fault, what do you think?

NB: I’ve just updated thetvdb page to point to the (correct) moviedb link that you found. I hadn’t noticed previously that it was pointing to that other page.

Plex pulls TV show info from both tbdb and tvdb, then combines it and uses that to feed metadata to Plex Media Server.

When they get inconsistent or conflicting information it can result in bad matching, etc.

It has happened with other shows, and Plex has been able to tune things in their database.

Good. Give it a few days to work through the system. Plex has to pick up the changes from the sites, then it takes a bit to update the metadata in everyone’s servers.

Fingers crossed. Hopefully nothing else has to be done. I’ll try matching again in a few days.
Thank you for your help!

Looks like case where the MovieDB is confused.

This show I think was supposed to be the AU version as it has the correct show data but the the poster and backdrop are incorrect: Insight (TV Series) — The Movie Database (TMDB)

Contributors seem to be confusing it with this show: Insight (2019) - TheTVDB.com

Somebody needs to fix the TMDB entry.

This new entry is a duplicate and should be removed: Insight (AU) (TV Series) — The Movie Database (TMDB)

To help I have fixed the show level external ids for both IMDB and TVDB. These linked to the wrong shows so it should help with things once the change is replicated into the plex back-end system. Give it 24/48 hours.

BTW… I’m not familiar enough with the show to add the missing or fix up other incorrect content, maybe someone who is here would do that.

I’ve reported the content issues to TMDB as well as the duplicate TMDB entry.

I’ve also reverted the TVDB link to the TMDB page as it was correct.

Those are now incorrect.

This is the correct show, it just has the incorrect posters (see my post above yours).

This is the AU show: Insight (TV Series) — The Movie Database (TMDB) / Insight (1999) - TheTVDB.com

This is a Portuguese show: Insight (2019) - TheTVDB.com
