Skipping the intro leads to audio desync on Nvidia Shield

Server Version#: 1.32.8.7639
Player Version#: 10.7.0.5386 Nvidia Shield App running on a Nvidia Shield Pro 2019

This is the issue I posted about here. The topic got locked, but I’m still having the same exact issue.
It happens quite often on my Nvidia Shield that after pressing the “Skip Intro” button, the intro will be skipped, but audio will be out of sync. Pausing/unpausing doesn’t fix this, the only way I can currently fix it, is if I rewind 10 sec for example, the audio will be back in sync (lately this doesn’t work either, I have to stop the playback and restart it). This never happens on web, Plex desktop app or on my Xbox, it’s exclusively a Nvidia Shield issue.
Is this issue a known bug? I can’t seem to find anything about it on the forum, but I found an older Reddit post where people report having the same exact issue here as well as other people reporting having this issue in my old topic.

True, no lies.

I have noticed this as well. And also on the same player version as OP

This bug has been pretty much ignored (in my old topic as well) for months over months and I don’t know how to get a reaction to this issue from Plex’s side. I’m hoping that by tagging a moderator that has previously been active in Shield topics like @OttoKerner or @tom80H would bring some attention to this issue. It’s gotten to the point where it happens basically every other playback. Sorry for the annoying tagging, but I really don’t know what else to do.

Still getting absolutely no answers or acknowledgement so I’m bumping this topic once more…

I’ll reply so I can be alerted of changes and bump again before it expires in 3 months. I had this exact problem; wish they would implement a VLC style workaround of being able to increase or decrease the audio delay, bit really should be fixed by devs, not by users.

I will also chime in that I’ve seen this behavior as well for months. I record over the air from an HDHomerun and the audio is out of sync a lot when skipping ads, as well as skipping intros to movies, TV shows. I’ve basically becomes accustomed to the 10 second back once I see the audio is out of sync.

This happens on both an Nvidia Shield Pro 2019, and the regular Nvidia Shield 2019 (the tube version).

Saw a separate post about this recently, but can’t find it now, where one of the reps mentioned it’s on the bug list but didn’t have an ETA.

Since we still haven’t received no answer, I’m going to bump this again. I have seen a somewhat similar problem being reported, which apparently can be fixed by downgrading to the 9.28.0.3162 client version. This was not the case for my audio/video desync issue and the problem wasn’t fixed by simply downgrading to the client version.
I’m not sure if the 2 issues are related, since that issue seems to be appearing for 4k content and my audio/video desync issue happens in 1080p content as well.
I will try to tag some of the staff people that seemed to be involved with that topic such as @morganj and @sixones (sorry for the tag).

I have the exact same problem for a year or more.
Nvidia shield tv

I have some good news.
I’m gonna tag all the people that reported the issue in this topic, hopefully this helps you guys @Basche @michaelradny @scb147 @Insomnic_1 @paolovador.

I was researching this issue again and have stumbled upon this reddit post. The content of the post has been deleted, but by reading the comments and using the Wayback Machine, I found out that people were reporting that this issue would only occur if you had “Dolby audio processing” turned on in the Shield’s settings.

It seems like this bug is caused by the Nvidia Shield and it was already fixed by them in a hotfix (Resolves AV sync issues when Dolby Processing is enabled). This hotfix hasn’t been officially released yet sadly (you can still apply for the Hotfix and receive the update if you want, via the Nvidia link).

What I did was just simply turned the “Dolby audio processing” setting OFF on my Shield (Settings > Device preferences > Display & Sound > Advanced sound settings > Dolby audio processing) and I’m happy to report that I haven’t had the issue since (it’s been like 3-4 days).

woaw thanks, I’m going to try it right now. You’re sure this wasn’t shipped already ? The Nvidia page is hard to parse

all right, looks like it works, will keep this thread up to date by the end of week

Yep, I have the latest official version installed on my Shield: 9.1.1(33.2.0.157), which was released on 11/1/22.

The fix was included, as per the post I linked in:

The first 9.1.1+ Hotfix deployed on 7/6/2023 as 33.2.0.201

Honestly, I have no idea why it’s taking this long for them to officially release this version…

Found this thread which seems to indicate that option is a bit odd so mileage might vary but consensus is that for Plex, having it off if connected to devices that can process dolby itself is the way to go: Reddit - The heart of the internet

This post in nvidia forums about it clarifies (linked in that reddit thread):

Edit:
The audio sync problem I was having included TrueHD+Atmos, not just EAC3 - the reason I got the Shield was for the TrueHD support so not sure if this setting\change would impact that issue for me or not (am connected to receiver that can parse it). I’d really like to hear back if this hotfix\setting change works for people with TrueHD streams. I returned the Shield when I couldn’t get this sorted out so can’t test it myself.

I disabled the Dolby audio processing, and still get the issue.

I have watched 2 seasons since Tuesday. Skipped intros, fast forwarded: everything is fine with no desync !
If I enable Dolby audio processing again I can reliably reproduce the desync with some fast forwards or skip intros.
Thanks again @Horea17 !

I’m really glad the issue got fixed for you. I can report the same thing, haven’t had any issues with the desync since turning Dolby audio processing off.

It seems like maybe your issue could be unrelated. Are you experiencing stutters during playback? Are you trying to play 4K content with seamless branching?
If so, maybe these would be of help to you:

Also, it’s a bit risky, but you could try applying for the Nvidia Shield Hotfix and try that? The risky part is, once you install the Hotfix, you can’t go back, so I would definitely read more about the Hotfix before doing this. You can apply and read more on Nvidia’s official forum here:

https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/geforce/forums/shield-tv/9/522242/shield-experience-upgrade-911-hotfix-image/

Edit: I have also read some posts about Framerate/Resolution match settings being part of the problem potentially, so @Basche you could also try playing with those settings around.

Im still on 8.2.3on shield and not heard much great things about 9.1.1. Maybe one day I will update. In regards to 4k, so far the issues I had was a bug towards the beginning of many movies where there would be a weird little 1/2 audios stutter and it would fixe itself. For the skip intro issue, I get that audio desync for when 1080p TV shows, and I think still matches to what others here have.
