Solution: Unable to play my m4a music files using the Plex app on my Samsung Smart TV

I have a Plex Media Server on my QNAP NAS. I am able to play my music files using the Plex Web on my Mac and on my iPhone, but it doesn’t work using the Plex app on my Samsung Smart TV. I start the song, but the progress bar doesn’t show that it starts and no music plays.
Is there an article that covers this issue?

My music files are all m4a. I just tried playing a flac music file from the Plex app on my TV and received an error that it wasn’t supported. I’ve read that both formats are supported by Plex, so I have to assume that I need to set something up within Plex to get these files working on my TV. Does anyone know what I need to setup to get this to work?

Since Plex support?? and this forum were unable to supply a cause or a solution, I spent several days trying to find something that would work. I discovered that MP3 music files worked fine, so it appeared that it was an issue of supporting the M4A and FLAC music files. I finally stumbled upon an article that provided a work around. Apparently, this is a Plex app bug on the Samsung TVs, which has been around for at least two year (as that is when the work around was posted).

The Work-Around:
In the Plex app settings under ‘Video’, turn off ‘Direct Play’. This ‘unrelated’ change allows the M4A and FLAC music files to play. I’m not sure what the ‘Direct Play’ setting does, so I’m not sure what else toggling this setting will affect.
