[Solved] ALL movies no longer play after update to PMS v1.15.3.835 (s1001 error)

It is possible that other servers may be trying to play something different than a pre-roll video. The way I discovered this was my problem was that the web client threw the error but gave me a skip/retry option and clicking skip allowed movies to play.

Hi again!

Just downgraded to 1.14.0.5470, since after downgrading to 1.15.2.793, it didn’t immediately work for me (but that might have been a red herring). What I did find out though, is that 1.15.2.835 actually seems to break the media analysis, and this data is obviously saved in that broken way to the Plex cache. I know this since even after downgrading to 1.14, the files that haven’t played after the latest updates weren’t immediately playable, but I had to analyse those again first. After that, the files played fine. I have no real motivation to upgrade to 1.15.2.793 now, but I might try this tomorrow. After what I found out already, I’d expect 1.15 to work as well, though.

To downgrade PMS on Windows, you have to do the following:
-Stop the Plex Media Server and make sure no processes are running anymore (including the PlexUpdateService)
-Rename or copy the ā€œPlex Media Serverā€ folder below ā€œ%LOCALAPPDATA%ā€ to something like ā€œ_Plex Media Serverā€ (basically to prevent that the uninstaller will touch these files or to have a backup if it does).
-Uninstall your current PMS version.
-Install the old version but don’t start it yet.
-Rename ā€œ_Plex Media Serverā€ back to ā€œPlex Media Serverā€ below ā€œ%LOCALAPPDATA%ā€ (or copy the contents of your backup folder into the new folder).

NOTE: If you started the old release already, you have to stop it completely and remove the new ā€œPlex Media Serverā€ folder, before you can restore the backup folder you created before.

After downgrading, you should analyse all media. You may have to do this explicitly for individual files though (the global option didn’t work for all files for me).

By the way: It seems there is no obvious way to get links to old releases from www.plex.tv, so I looked for those on other sites. Turns out that those actually link to the old files on www.plex.tv sometimes.

I had an entry in there and removed it. Also I made sure variables aren’t set to play trailers. However, unless I update server past .793 I can’t test it. If someone else has the problem currently maybe they can try this and report back?

I’ll test it on next update as I’ve chosen to skip .835.

The fact that they changed the path to absolute in .835 is interesting. I hope it’s as simple as that.

Oh and this problem is defnitely not about trailers or pre-roll clips. Might be a separate issue, but I don’t even have trailers and don’t currently own a Plex pass nor have I ever set a folder for that. I therefore also have no ā€œSkipā€ option when playing a movie.

That being said, I still bet my money on a broken media analysis, which would perfectly match the log of infinitejelly, which tells us that PMS complained about no audio or video streams in the media files. If Plex analyses the files and thinks they are no media files, of course it will error out.

Yeah, I don’t use pre-roll videos, not trailers nor manually specified, so I don’t think that’s the issue?

What I can imagine is that these videos suffer from the same bug and since this problem seems to not affect all files (at least not for me: It’s been ā€œonlyā€ 2 out of 3 I tried!), it could be another red herring that the trailer doesn’t play but the video does. If the trailer wasn’t properly analysed but the movie is, that’s what you’d get. And I get the idea that no-one does any actual QA (from a user POV; not only unit testing) for this project.

It’s my entire movies library that’s not playing. TV and music libraries are fine ĀÆ_(惄)_/ĀÆ

For me it’s only movies affected. I think that’s the common experience. Also again for me issue is resolved when downgrading to .793 from . 835.

I’m willing to accept that there is more than one source to this problem. All I’m saying is that I had the exact symptoms and error messages discussed here and getting rid of a call to a video that only plays before movies completely resolved it for me.

Paging @penguin, @expresso99…

Thanks for all of your investigations thus far, much appreciated!

Chiming in here to confirm that removing the ā€œMovie pre-roll videoā€ URL seems to have resolved issues with Movie playback for the moment. I’m currently running PMS v1.15.3.858 (beta channel) with no other glitches, fingers crossed.

Much like your prior setups, my preroll URL did contain .../library/metadata/.... as well, which caused issues on beta version 858.

Sadly, I haven’t been able to coax an absolute path for the preroll media out of Plex. Unless hosting the file elsewhere would help (Amazon S3 or a local web server maybe? – I haven’t had a chance to test that theory yet), I’m not sure what the practical resolution is here.

While I’m of course glad that removing the pre-roll URL or simply downgrading PMS can allow movies to play once more, I am eager to see things working as advertised. If you can think of something else to try, or if you want me to test anything, please let me know; I’m happy to help!

I upgraded two Ubuntu servers and I can’t access either one - says the servers can’t be found. Rebooted, logged out/in, nothing. Connection refuses when accessing locally.

Luckily my main server is a VM and I made a snapshot before upgrading. Reverting fixed it instantly. The support here is fantastic - they’ll find a fix. In the meantime, the obvious answer is snapshot before updating, revert if needed, or hold off on this update.

Thanks for that info. :slightly_smiling_face:

There could be multiple reasons for the error caused by .835 I suppose. I’ll post any interesting findings once the next post .835 update is released and I try again.

Yeah, snapshots are awesome! Hopefully the next beta update (post 835) will resolve this issue, but that’s a great thing to keep in mind…

Whether a proper VM, Docker, or something else, the ability to snapshot Plex and restore it instantly could very well get you out of an unpleasant situation. Take snapshots like they’re going out of style! (After all, they’re easy to clean up later.)

All the movies I’ve tried so far play fine on my system. However I re-compress everything in Handbrake.

Is there a chance that everyone experiencing problems is trying to play a raw rip or somehow making use of transcoding?

Also for TV shows are those recorded OTA or Blu-ray rips that are similar to your movies?

Is there a chance that everyone experiencing problems is trying to play a raw rip or somehow making use of transcoding?

I can’t speak for others @kamhouse, but my content runs the gamut: some legit Blu-Ray rips; some automatically downloaded; some content that’s transcoded for most clients; and some that direct plays. Handbrake export or not makes zero difference for me, this happens for every single movie, irrespective of origin.

TV shows play as expected.

As I stated earlier in the thread, I believe the underlying issue is with Plex’s handling of absolute vs. relative paths, which for me manifested itself in the movie pre-roll video settings.

I’ve have the same issue with a large portion of my library, not all, though i have a very large library and thought that might be the issue. after reading this, its a small comfort to know that it’s the update that caused it.

anyway, any file giving you this error just run analyze on it from the … menu on the file and it will fix it. you can also analyze entire libraries and it seems to work as well.

Hope there is a fix for this and the linux PPA issues as well soon.

OK after two failed upgrades with the same results as everyone else … I saw Penguin’s comment and yes, removing the ā€œMovie pre-roll videoā€ path in Settings/Extras solved the problem.

Clearing the Movie Pre-Roll Video field under Settings > General resolved the problem for me!

Hi infinitejelly!

That is nice, but as I mentioned before: I did never set anything there, nor did I use that feature at all, so it can’t be the (complete) solution to the current s1001 errors, unfortunately. Just wanted to point this out again, so this doesn’t get ignored.

I just got mine working by deleting the pre roll
