[Solved] Photo Timeline Out of Order and Photos in Wrong Date

I tried removing all my pictures, cleaning the bundles and optimizing database and then moved folder back but no luck. Really frustrating that it can import the metadata that is in the file and display it properly. I think this issue has been going on for a while and hope they release a fix soon so it displays the info properly.

There may be some files causing a crash during the scan. Perhaps you can look at the logs and see if there are any errors during the scan. I’m just guessing here.

I agree, it is too bad Plex cannot fix this issue.

I know they have been focusing on movies and TV and live tv as well as other things but this is something the plex users need fixed as it’s really annoying sitting down looking at old pictures and they are not in the correct dates in the timeline. C’mon @Plex fix this for your users it’s gone ignored long enough!

I have issues with the same feature, photos are correctly date tagged. when looking in Library folder views and viewing the info I can see the date it should be in the timeline, but its just not there. Very annoying. with 40k+ photos i don’t want to be messing around with accurate metadata just to make Plex work. I use other programs for photo management that use the date so I don’t want to mess them up. As a life time Plex Pass user I really hope Photos gets some love soon as its such a great feature to use when you have family round occasionally and you want to show the kids growing up.

Seriously ?? This issue was raised in august 2019, but still no fix? Wow… This is not just a small issue, but I would even use the word critical.

Pleas stop pushing new features for plex and make sure you first fix some really important bugs. The whole photo library is useless. I’ve spent hours creating albums … Now my timeline is broken and the only fix is recreating a new library. Which means that my albums will be lost …

I’ve just gone back to using Google Photos until I have the time to implement another self hosted solution or whatever. Too much work and issues!

This is the one thing that drives me nuts with plex, this photo library is bread and butter functionality, one of the key foundations of Plex, and should just work.

“Plex is the key to personal media bliss.” No it’s not it frustrates your end users who use the photo library.

“Plex magically scans and organizes your files, automatically sorting your media beautifully and intuitively in your Plex library.” Not it doesn’t can’t sort your library in the correct timeline, how dumb is that!

My CCTV videos in the photo library just get stuck all under one date and nothing I seem to do can fix the issue. I’ve ranted about this issue for what seems like years and people at plex just turn a blind eye to it, or give the job to someone not competent enough to investigate it.

I do not understand why this is marked as solved!

Replying to this since Google Photos is pulling the plug on unlimited storage after June 2021, and more people are going to have to use this feature. Please fix the photo scanner, I’ve added photos that are clearly named YYYYMMDD-TTTT and it’s marked all of them as tomorrow’s date.

Subbing here as well. I’ve tried to migrate my library to Plex because of Photos free storage ending (same as I did because of Play Music shutting down), and I’m struggling to figure out how Plex effectively assigns dates to photos.

One would have thought that between the file name and the EXIF Create date it would be sorted, but somehow that doesn’t cut it. It seems that… Modify Date trumps Create Date, but then for videos there are other tags as well for the purpose and, well, it’s just a disgrace.

Does anyone know the hierarchy for the use of these tags so that one can at least curate their library manually if needed?

Thanks.

Not sure why this is marked as solved when I have the latest version and the same issue?

I have also installed plex on Debian NUC & add about 25000 photos in library & about 2000 photos time line are screwed. about 2000 photos shown on yesterday’s(photo added/library added) date. so about 2000 photos time line screwed. anybody know any idea to solve this problem without reinstall everything again. i do not want to rebuild server.

Just want to add one strange thing also, the photos with right timelines are auto rotate portrait/landscape wise. But the photos with screwed time line are not auto rotate. So I have feeling that plex just skips the processing parts of these photos which make them hang in middle with screwed time line & without auto rotate process. anybody know in plex any command to erase custom things (just like factory reset). so that we will add library again may be that time plex pick those files also.

Hi, I am searching for a replacement of Google Photos and therefore I have installed Plex on my Mycloudex2ultra. Very important for me is the timeline view, to show all my photos and videos (over 50000) in correct order. The media are stored in different folders on the NAS. Unfortunately I have same issues date of 01 Jan 1900 but exif are right and the position in the timeline is right. Or date 2036 or date 1980, also with correct exif dates. Also it is very slow compared with Google. Also some bugs with videos which will not be played. I am only searching for a simple Gallery App to show all my photos and videos in correct order, but I found nothing. Is this really so difficult to code?

I have same issue with pictures taken by Canon EOS-M2.

This issue is lasting for years.

What are you doing PLEX?

Why is this closed? Has anyone got a solution for this?
Maybe this could help, but I didn’t tried it yet: GitHub - arehbein-git/ppTag: As the plex server is not compatible with xmp metadata inside photos, this python based app uses plex rest api to implement an update of all related metadata within plex with tags and rating of the xmp (lightroom based)

Hi all!

Having the same issue here. My photos are all mixed up despite knowing the metadata is right. This is an important feature for me since I share family pictures with close ones.

A fix would be more than appreciated!

I also seem to be having this issue. Would love Plex to solve this so that I can migrate away from Google Photos now that their service will no longer be free

Issue with timeline and wrong dates persists. It has been over a year now. Has anyone found the solution? I noticed that my old photos (< 2011) are completly out of dates and timeline shown blank/black previews.

This workaround worked for me: [Solved] Photo Timeline Out of Order and Photos in Wrong Date - #31 by dmp1ce

I have tried everything suggested here. Some had success. I did not. It fixed few issues but not all. My oldest photos from 2012 and beyond showed blank/black previews. I did end up rebuilding PMS and this solved 95% of the problems. One thing I noticed is some of my photos in timeline are not grouped properly. I can live with that.
