Hey folks, so I’ve got a file with the following specs added to my home server:
Size : 10.6 GiB (11,377,509,754 bytes)
Duration : 1 h 58 min
Video : HEVC (Main 10@L5@High)
Bitrate : 12.0 Mb/s
Resolution : 3840 x 1606 (24.000 FPS)
This file plays perfectly fine on any of my non-browser based devices (Samsung S23, Galaxy Tab s6, Chromecast with Google TV) and there is flawless playback. The file is also set to ‘original quality’ and again, no issues with stuttering or buffering.
The problem is that when watching this movie on Plex’s web-based player (over at app.plex.tv), the playback is smooth for 10-15 seconds and then the video itself skips about ten seconds and continues smoothly (the video is already buffered several minutes ahead at this point).
I checked out a Reddit post from a few years ago that suggested using the “Use alternate streaming protocol for video playback” option (web player > settings > Debug)- this solved the skipping issue however it only displays a black screen, leaving things worse off.
Is there any combination of setting to correct/alleviate this? This has clearly been an issue since at least 5 years ago as per the Reddit posting, so I’m downright curious as to why this is still an ongoing issue.
Server Version#: 1.41.0.8994
Player Version#: n/a (app.plex.tv is always up to date)
<If providing server logs please do NOT turn on verbose logging, only debug logging should be enabled>
EDIT: It appears I’ve found a solution: Both “DIRECT STREAM” and “USE ALTERNATE STREAMING PROTOCOL FOR VIDEO PLAYBACK” are required to be disabled, indicating that “DIRECT STREAM” is the culprit all along regarding the intermittent skipping.
