Somebody please ELI5 how to set up remote access! Netgear Nighthawk R7000P

For 2 days I’ve been trying to do what I can to set up remote access with my Plex Server, but I haven’t made any progress. I’m using the Netgear R7000P router and the server is installed on my laptop. All I want to do is just be able to access media from my server when I’m away from home. I have the apps downloaded on my phone (Samsung Galaxy Note 8), and on my PS4. It would be life changing to be able to access all my servers’ stored media on my phone or even the PS4 when I take it to a friend’s house.

Every time I’ve tried enabling remote access, it flashes the green text for a split second then always reverts back to the red text stating “Not available outside your network” with “Your server is signed in to Plex, but is not reachable from outside your network” below it. I’ve tried doing everything the troubleshooting tells me, though granted I’m probably not doing it right because I know next to nothing about this stuff. I set a static IP address, I tried dealing with port-forwarding but have no idea what it means, and I even uninstalled then reinstalled all the software and nothing has helped.

So, I’m asking somebody to please explain to me like you would a five-year-old how to set up remote access using the router that I have (or if its even possible).

I am having the exact same problem with the R7000p I bought a couple days ago. UPnP is on, but even with it off and the port manually forwarded, Plex is saying it isn’t accessible from the internet. Searching around, I see other people have had the same or similar issues in the past. Has anyone done this successfully with this router?

I finally got remote access working on the Plex server behind the R7000P. I tried several different configurations before finally finding one that worked.

  • Set the R7000P as the DMZ host on the (Actiontec) router <-- Works like a charm! (Still requires port forwarding on the R7000P) This solution basically sends all incoming requests directly to the R7000P.
  • Double port-forwarding (with UPnP enabled/disabled) <-- Does not work due to Double-NAT
  • Setting the Actiontec (Verizon FiOS/Frontier) router to bridge mode <-- Probably works but likely prevents set top boxes from getting VOD and guide updates (see this post for more details)

Hope this helps anyone with a similar setup.

I’m seeing this problem too; I can’t get Plex to work with my Nighthawk R7000P.
Thanks in advance…
