I noticed a very strange problem today. I decided to go see if I had the first Indiana Jones (Raiders of the Lost Ark or RLA) movie in my library. I saw that I had movies two through four but not RLA, so I copied RLA over from another server. After I copied it I initiated a library scan and again, it didn’t show up. So I checked the actual folder on the NAS. It turns out that I did have a copy of RLA in my library already! Plex hadn’t seen it. It also doesn’t see the new copy of RLA, which was in a new folder. The first copy of RLA is in a folder with IJ movies two through four (which, again, Plex found) with identical permissions and encoding characteristics.
Any ideas?

When you say it doesn’t show up, does it not show up with the other films, or does it not show up at all if you try searching the library for “Raiders”.
For me sometimes with series all except one movie will be grouped together. So three of the four movies will be under something like “Indiana Jones” and the other one will get listed as “Raiders of the Lost Ark” under “R”.
Other times to test what’s happening I’ll go to Settings->Troubleshooting, click “Optimize Database” and “Clean Bundles”. Then, add a new folder with just that one file in it via “Manage Library”->“Add Folders”. Which is kind of me just being lazy to avoid the “Plex Dance”:
If one of those fixes it Plex might be wonky because it thinks you deleted it or something, and optimizing the database, adding it back to its proper folder/filename, and waiting should eventually fix it.
You can also try adding it to an “Other Videos” library to see if Plex sees it there.
Have you used any type of utility to check the file, just in case? Even if the permissions and encoding characteristics are the same.
A few times I went the nuclear option and removed all library folders. “Optimize Database” and “Clean Bundles”. And then add the library folders back and let the whole thing rescan.
Oh, I am a fool! The movie’s official name is just Raiders of the Lost Ark - no Indiana Jones in there at all. Thank you for suggesting that check. Plex is working fine, it’s me who’s malfunctioned
I remembered that specific example happening to me. Also, the original Star Wars trilogy can end up like that, sorted under “Empire Strikes Back” and “Return of the Jedi”.
a good reminder, if you do not see a movie where you expect it to be, try SEARCH within plex, because sometimes the title is not in the order you may expect it to be.
