Split movie shows same progress and watched/unwatched state

Hi,

Should a split movie not have separate and independent watched states?

As per the above the two library entries show the exact progress state (same goes if I set watched/unwatched).

Thanks

Plex DocumentationYour Media
Multiple Editions - Movies
Multi-Version Movies

Plex considers them different versions of the same movie, so they have the same progress, watched status, etc.

Use editions instead. They will be listed separately in the library. Plex will track them as separate movies with separate progress and watched status.

/movies
  /F1 The Movie (2025)
    /F1 The Movie (2025).mkv
  /F1 The Movie (2025) {edition-DV4K}
    /F1 The Movie (2025) {edition-DV4K}.mkv

or

/movies
  /F1 The Movie (2025)
    /F1 The Movie (2025).mkv
    /F1 The Movie (2025) {edition-DV4K}.mkv

Note: If you have extras (trailers, shorts, etc.) then the movies must be in separate folders.

Example:

/movies
  /Blade Runner (1982) {edition-Final Cut}
    /Blade Runner (1982) {edition-Final Cut}.mkv
  /Blade Runner (1982) {edition-Director's Cut}
    /Blade Runner (1982) {edition-Director's Cut}.mkv

Thanks FordGuy. Every time I learn something new about Plex I’m even more impressed. The link you sent provides great explanations of both versions and editions. I realise I just need to let Plex to its thing most of the time:

(versions) allows player apps to either automatically choose the appropriate version to play or else offer the user a choice, since the versions should all represent the same underlying movie or episode. It’s the same actual content, just a different resolution/encoding/etc.”

That is a very cool feature and what I was trying to implement by splitting and renaming, not realising that the player will pick the best version anyway without all of that hassle.

Thanks again
