SRT subtitles on Chromecast constistently disappear a few minutes before the movie end

C’mon, Plex developers! I have faith on you! Send us the directions and we can provide whatever trace, log, debug, screen you may need to troubleshoot this. Plex is amazing, let us help to keep it this way!
Cheers!

Hi, new plex user, first post.

Arrived at this thread after googling what seems to be a bug and just wanted to confirm this exact behaviour on my plex server v1.19.5.3112 running on Ubuntu 20.04. Streaming through iOS Plex app to chromecast. Subtitles typically disappears near the end of movies.

In this case: movie “Vicky Cristina Barcelona”, mp4, external .srt file, subs disappears when approx 10 min remains.

And, more than a month after the last comment mentioning that the issue remains, we hear nothing from Plex developers. I wonder if they read this thread…
Amazing product, disappointing support.

Hello Plex Devs…

Just a reminder that this amazing product still has an ugly stain on its almost spotless reputation… tested yesterday with the brand new version 1.20.3.3437.

Please, help us to fix it.

I installed 1.21.0.3616 yesterday and the issue remains…

One month to Christmas… maybe Santa will bring the working version… (I’m a believer)

It’s still happening.

And the maddening thing is that I am not able to detect any exact pattern. Sometimes the whole movie plays OK. Sometimes the subtitles disappear 3 minutes before the end, sometimes 10 minutes. Sometimes the last 5 subtitles are missing, sometimes the last 20 subtitles. If the video is shorter than approx. 1 hour, it never happens, so it’s extremely hard to debug…

The developers could ask us to upload the video and the subtitle so they can debug, or give us some tooling to gather deeper logs and traces that would allow them to troubleshoot the issue… but looks like nobody cares…

I’ve noticed that, now, the behavior is worse. In the past, when the issue happened, I could rewind a few seconds and the subtitles started to work again. But, now, the only way to work around is to stop the video and resume it. But Plex has this hardcoded “feature” that “understands” that, if a video was stopped close to its end, it’s assumed that you finished watching it and it does not resume, it starts from the beginning. So you need to ffwd to the point you stopped in order to watch the remaining… so anoying!

For me, when this bug happens, it’s enough to click the “skip back 10 seconds” button once. This always helps.

Same issue here… Following this thread hoping for a solution.

Same same here, for a long time subs dissapear the last few minutes. I use Plex app on samsung TV. Really annoying as I wach a lot of Non English TV series and Movies, where subs are a condition to understand anything at all (Japanese, Korean, Israeli, Scandinavian, Spanish etc, etc)
The 10 sec rewind workaround only helps 20% of the time I guess.
Horrible bug and no solution to be seen.

I’ve had a new experience with this (or similar) bug: The subtitles of a standard (90 - 120 mins) movie stopped appearing exactly 1 hour after the start of the movie. This has now happened at least three times to me (with different movies).

With the same three movies, the subtitles also stopped appearing right before the end, as described in my original post.

I started having this problem months ago and after many tests and logs I decided to abandon Plex for good and go to Emby because I couldn’t find the problem anywhere.
At home I have 2 TVS (Samsung Q70T and LG UK6510) and in all subtitles they disappear near the end of what is being played. Sometimes, after 30s, the subtitles will appear again, but most of the time I have to leave the film and return to where I left off so that the subtitle works and this is an irritating process.
I have been without Plex since September and today I decided to reinstall the system together with Emby and to my surprise I again had the problem reported above.
I honestly have no more hope of knowing the reason for this problem and I think if you want to use Plex you will have to live with this forever.

Still happening here as well

Same problem here on my Samsung TV (version 5.7.1). This can’t be that hard to fix!

I did not surrender on trying to fix this bug. I’ve enabled debug, saved the log files and isolated the minute where the issue happened, but could not find anything odd. No error, no messages that look out of order.
It is really sad that Plex Team believes that this issue was solved in version 1.10.1.4561 (from Dec’17), according to this forum thread, but has been reported again and again, as seen here (Aug’19) and here (Nov’19). Plex developers, nobody is curious about solving this? I would be.

SOLVED!! on Ubuntu 20.04 LTS & PMS 1.22.0.4163

The external srt files needs to contain at the end of the srt file two(2) blank lines after the last line of the last subtitle. Nothing more, nothing less. These blank lines are inserted automatically by opening the srt file with the program Subtitle Edit (eg v358). Just open the file and save it. Check your srt file with notepad or any other editor and you will notice two blank lines have been inserted at the end. Since doing this systematically for my srt files I do not encounter subtitles that disappear. In case the problems occurs, check the srt file, if the two blank lines are present at the end, if not insert two blank lines.

Hello @ JSven… thanks a lot for pointing that out. It makes totally sense. But, unfortunately, it did not solve the issue. I’ve created a script to swipe all my SRT files and fix whatever issue it could find, including converting Linux line endings (LF) by Windows (CRLF) as it seems to be the “standard” in SRT files. But, nevertheless, the issue is still there. Happened yesterday, with a brand new SRT that is all CRLF and ends with two blank lines.
I think we will have to keep wishing upon a star that some Plex developer decides that this is actually an issue and engage on solving it for good. Until then, the users will have to keep restarting the video, sometimes having to scroll all the way down to the part where the issue happened, when Plex decides that you already watched enough of it to consider it completely watched (a good idea, of course, since most people stop the video before the credits… if the rest worked as expected too).

I am having this same issue. However, in my case, it occurs at any time during the playback of a vide - the subtitles just disappear, multiple times. I have to rewind and the subtitles come back… but then a few minutes later, the whole thing starts all over again.
