Currently, Music Videos can be stored in a global music videos folder.
They then display neatly formatted on the page of each music artist in a Music section. This is great.
But as a consequence you have to have music for each artist in order to see any of their videos, in this nice format.
Feature request:
Option 1) Add the ability to have a standalone Music Video section, with neatly formatted videos.
If a standalone Music Video section is not possible, then here is a fallback request:
Option 2) Add ability for artists to appear in Music section based on existence of music videos alone (not requiring music files).
Using the movie library type is just another workaround though, isn’t it? You cannot organize music videos properly by Artist unless you resort to a) browsing only by folders, or b) doing tons of crazy workarounds and manual meta-data filling.
Meanwhile we already have a dedicated automatic solution - music videos are organized perfectly by artist within a Music section.
The only problem is they are dependent upon the existence of music files. If you have music video files but no music files for an artist, you can’t see that artist’s videos.
I agree. I would like to see some type of improvement to the music video orginization. I have been messing with it and haven’t gotten it to work properly. There are instructions for this, but Plex doesn’t really handle them all that well. It just kind of puts(all) your music videos mixed in with all artitsts and lumps in with the vimeo videos.
Yes, I’ve been waiting for many years for organized Music Video support.
As of last year, we finally have it - but it is 100% dependent on the existence of Music in the library.
I just don’t get why it was done this way. Surely adding the ability to create sections purely for Music Videos where videos are organized by artist, would not be a huge step from what we currently have.
I would love to be able to do this. I use Apple Music for all my music, so there is no reason for me to also use Plex for music. I DO want to use Plex for my Music Videos though so I can watch them on my Apple TV (or wherever). There are several work arounds for the “needs at least 1 song by the artist” requirement, but they are all bad and kludgy. I have been just leaving them as a Movies library, but as previously mentioned they cannot be property organized as music videos this way. I also have several Music Video DVDs in my library for which I do not have any songs by the artist, just the DVD. I really don’t want to buy one single song by that artist just so that Plex can serve up the DVD content. I also don’t want to have to add 1500 artists to a Music library when there is only video content for 50 of them.
Yeah, that’s exactly it, the playlist aspect of music videos would be great. I think the aspect that Plex doesn’t get yet with music, is that we’ve got these beautiful tv’s, and we want to put these TV’s to good use!
tbh, nothing ever gets implemented you’re wasting your breath they just expand on other devices not fixing other platforms or adding features. Apart from just giving a donation plex pass is useless, and for sure my last year…
Please make sure to hit “Like” on my original post. Comments with “+1”, while supportive to us users, don’t count to the Plex team. They need to see the “Like” number on the first post increase. Thanks!

The Movie library type works just fine for music videos.
No, it doesn’t. It constantly tries to match them to actual movies as well as clutters up the movies section on the front page. There needs to be separate library types for lots of media as well as recently added sections for them on the front page.
Stand-up
Documentary (TV type)
Documentary (Movie type)
Music Videos
Reality/News or whatever you would call it
Sport
PPV
Workout
Adult
etc.
Adding all of the above into the same TV and movie library types screws up the front page as well as lot so incorrect matches for stuff.
