Started getting Playback Error on Samsung TV out of nowhere

Samsung TV specs:

  • Model: UN55BU8000GXZD
  • Software Version: T-KSU2EBUABC-1661.6, BT - S

I’m running the latest version of the Plex Media Server 64-bit on my Windows 10 PC

I’ve been using Plex pretty much everyday for the past week and everything was fine. Even today, maybe 8 hours ago (although I only just updated the server after the error appeared to see if it would fix it)

However, I just now started getting the Playback Error

Initially it said: “Playback Error: an unexpected playback problem occurred”

I tried some fixes (will list them in the end) and now it just shows a big title “Playback Error” with a black bar below it saying nothing when I try to play a movie or tv show

Fixes I’ve tried:

On the Samsung TV app:

  • Deleting and installing the Plex app
  • Login out and logging in
  • Turning off the TV for 5 minutes
  • Allow/Prefer Insecure Connections set to Always
  • Disable “Cinema Trailers” option (Settings > Player Experience > Cinema Trailers > Don’t Play)
  • Disable “Quality Suggestions” (Settings > Video > Quality Suggestions)

On the desktop website:

  • Deleting and installing the Plex Media Server
  • Deleting the libraries and setting them up again
  • Enabled “Automatically adjust quality (beta)” (Account Settings > Plex Web > Quality)

I’d really appreciate some help. Let me know if there’s any information I left out that could be important

Edit:

I’ve tried watching the files through the Plex web app both on my phone and my PC in which the server is running.

It is also not working and giving me this error:

Error code: s1001 (Network)

Maybe it’s not something related to the Samsung TV then? I don’t have any other devices where I could test it.

UPDATE: SOLVED

I managed to fix my problem.

It turns out it wasn’t something specifically related to my Samsung TV, as I had assumed when I saw the network error on my PC and phone.

I had to add my local network to Plex. It was pretty simple:

  1. Go to: Settings > Server > Network > List of IP addresses and networks that are allowed without auth
  2. Add your IP addresses or network ranges there
  3. Restart Plex Media Server

It immediately went back to working on the Plex web app.

When I went over to test on my TV, the first file I opened gave me a playback error. I then enabled Force Direct Play on the specific movie settings and it worked.

But Force Direct Play is probably not required, as I tested other movies and they worked without it. Worth a try if it doesn’t immediately fix it.

I’m having the exact same issue:

“Playback Error: an unexpected playback problem occurred”

Not sure of other users, but my Plex App on my Samsung TV plays music from my library, but does not play other media content (Series - Movies), no matter quality. TV is connected via ethernet cable and I disabled all firewall and or DNS filtering (got my own pi-hole running) but those never caused an issue.

The Plex Samsung App can see the library and all metadata without problems, but cannot reproduce medias (except for audio)

I have fully reset the TV to factory, reinstalled all apps, and initially it can play media until the TV finishes updating (after full reset) but as soon as that happens, the error comes back and never goes away.

Samsung TV and Tinzen 5.5

Samsung TV specs:

“AVPlay version”: “4.0”,
“Tizen version”: 5.5,
“Package version”: “5.64.1”,
“Model”: “UA32T5300ASXNZ”

I’m running the latest version of the Plex Media Server on Docker, on the last version of Ubuntu Server. I know the post says Windows-Server as a tag/flare but this is a Tinzen/Plex compatibility issue, not where the Server is running on (for what I have read all over the internet) also, it seems that this is a recurrent problem here in the forum and these kind of posts just get ignored and never answered. Posts get closed after 3 months of inactivity and no one form the dev teams leaves any comments or updates (or at least a link to an update)

I hope our luck to be a bit better than usual.

Any other device works perfect (smartphones, desktop app, browser, and users I share can see any content on everything but my Samsung tv)

I’ve been using Plex pretty much everyday for the past 4 years with the same device and everything was fine. 1 day ago I started having playback error. I passed the error log to llama3 and it said this:

======== AI analysis ===========

The log shows a series of events related to attempting to play content on a Tizen-based device, likely a Smart TV. The user tried to play an item, but encountered errors during the player setup process. Specifically, the error messages indicate that the application failed to read the ‘continuity’ property because it was undefined. This suggests a potential issue with the media playback library or its integration with the Tizen platform.

The errors occurred at the following key moments:

Attempting to open a player for playback (FailedToSetupOrCreatePlayer)

Reporting the error and not being able to retry (could not retry, reporting error)

Player sent a ready signal but no playable content was provided (PlaybackMetrics: Player sent ready signal or closed but no player or playable provided)

Unable to set the current playable to play (PlaybackSessionController: could not set current playable to play)

After these errors, the application tried to open an ActionsModal, possibly for user interaction, but it’s unclear if this succeeded as the log does not show further details about the modal or any subsequent actions taken by the user.

To resolve this issue, the developer should investigate:

Ensure that the Tizen SDK and media playback library are correctly installed and compatible with each other.

Check for any updates or patches for the Tizen platform or related libraries.

Review the code responsible for initializing the media player to confirm it's handling undefined properties gracefully, perhaps by adding checks before attempting to read 'continuity'.

Examine if there are specific configurations or settings required for playing content on Tizen devices that might have been overlooked.

============ End of AI analysis =========================

Of course AI did not help at all, but at least gave some direction (Tizen)

However, I keep getting the Playback Error

“Playback Error: an unexpected playback problem occurred”

I tried the same fixes that are all over the internet and the previously mentioned by leos247 before me.

Fixes I’ve tried: (that did nothing)

On the Samsung TV app:

Deleting and installing the Plex app
Resetting the Samsung TV to factory defaults uninstalling everything and reinstalling all again
Login out and logging in
Turning off the TV for 5 minutes
Allow/Prefer Insecure Connections set to Always
Direct Play and Direct Stream On and/or Off (nothing changes)
Force direct play Off
Disable Bitrate Limiting Off
Original quality and Trans-coded (less quality) no changes
Disable “Cinema Trailers” option (Settings > Player Experience > Cinema Trailers > Don’t Play)
Disable “Quality Suggestions” (Settings > Video > Quality Suggestions)
Reset the app a few times

On the desktop website (server side):

Deleting and installing the Plex Media Server
Deleting the libraries and setting them up again
Enabled “Automatically adjust quality (beta)” (Account Settings > Plex Web > Quality)
Allow/Prefer Insecure Connections set to Preferred

I’d really appreciate some help. Log shared in attachment.

There was a Samsung Tizen update three days ago. Maybe that’s the reason.

Update:

I’ve tried watching the files through the Plex web app both on my phone and my PC in which the server is running.

It is also not working and giving me this error:

Error code: s1001 (Network)

Maybe it’s not something related to the Samsung TV then? I don’t have any other devices where I could test it.

Yes, that was the culprit of the issues. It was fine until Samsung pushed the update.

Maybe try a direct connection to your TV. Avoid using Wi-Fi if possible. Rule out the Network problem as a connection issue.

I wired the TV straight from my router with a brand new Cat6a cable and I can see the TV in my router and in my DNS tables. My problem is not Network Related. Other Network apps (Youtube - Spotify) work perfectly in the TV.

I forgot to update this earlier, but I managed to fix my problem.

It turns out it wasn’t something specifically related to my Samsung TV, as I had assumed when I saw the network error on my PC and phone.

My TV and my PC are both using Ethernet cables, so maybe you could try doing what I did and see if it helps you.

This is what I tried:

Adding my local network to plex:

  1. Go to: Settings > Network > List of IP addresses and networks that are allowed without auth: e.g. 192.168.1.1/24 (server is sitting on 192.168.1.110 and the TV is sitting at 192.168.1.80) gateway of course is 192.168.1.1 so this should work.
  2. Add my IP range: 192.168.1.1/24
  3. Restart Plex Media Server

This did not work.

  1. Forced direct play

This did not work.

  1. Restarted Plex Media Server Docker Container.

This did not work.

I’m glad you could fix your problem though

Since this has been resolved on your end, I’ll open my own thread, looks mine is a separate issue

You have taken the wrong format for your home net IP. You should use: 192.168.xxx.yyy/255.255.255.0. Look here.

Changed IP range to: 192.168.1.1/255.255.255.0

Restarted the Server Container. and power cycle the TV

That did not work.
