The bug came up when NBC started airing the old episodes at 9c. NBC should be tagging the shows as re-runs.
That is when the bug showed up, but that is not the bug.
The bug is the way Plex matches files. Plex treats a file that is the wrong length and completely the wrong name, ID, etc, as the latest episode and so decides not to record the actual airing.
To compound that problem, there is also a bug in the dialog that lets you select which time to record – the times are wrong, so if I select it, nothing records.
This is a Plex bug. Full stop. And it has been a bug for 6 months. And Plex has barely acknowledged these threads, much less offered an explanation or fix.

On what the Plex team is working on if it’s not bug impacting most popular recording in the USA. I have been hit by the same bugs, tried workarounds. It show in the UI that it will be recorded, but doesn’t record it, and hide error from the UI. I used many other products before, worst product about not recording what it says it will. Also, why I need to put a hope statement in a forum. Where is the bug tracker? and why Plex doesn’t send the error automatically to the Plex’s team?
I have a similar problem with SNL but both do record. It only shows one episode (the live one) on my dashboard info, however when watching it starts playing the repeat ep. If you select the “…” it gives the option for “Play Version” which will bring up two options for the episode, one of which is the live one.
Another interesting bug along with this, whatever time was stopped on either version, that is the time it will resume on the version you select.
It’d be nice if PLEX recognized they were two separate episodes and not different versions of the same one; they are in different folders on the server (live ones “Season 44” repeat ones “Season 2019”) yet for some reason they are getting merged on the dashboard.
This is still a problem. Is there a decent alternative to plex livetv DVR yet? I’m tired of plex failing to record the new episode of SNL just because it’s after a re-run. Plex PLEASE fix your DVR software. I beg you.
I just upgraded to 1.16.1.1246 which comes with the new DVR. SNL isn’t airing now, so we’ll have to see what the behavior is in the fall, but I’m not optimistic since it is currently showing the abridged rerun tomorrow as a “new” episode…
