Stop the enshittification of Plex

Can you please stop this corporate take over of Plex?

I’ve bee a Plex user for a decade, and it seems like every single update, Plex is getting worse. Navigating the Plex app on Roku is now worse than it has ever been - and all of my friends with plex servers, and their friends who share those plex servers share the same frustrations.

There is zero focus on users - it’s all on maximizing profit. I get that you guys want to make money, but this is just unbearable. The plex app worked fine years ago - it didnt need many changes. Charging a small fee per user would have kept everyone happy instead.

As of the last update on Roku, I can no longer even stream, it’s pixelated, and laggy.

Can we stop the over-use of the word enshittification? I mean it’s not really even a word. Just a term some dummy thought up. Be original.

All I know is I have been using Plex since 2010 on ROKU and never had an issue. I even bragged on it to friends and this has been 15 years worth! It has been wonderful. NOW it is trash. The last update is just terrible - not asked for and not needed. I hate it and if I could revert I would but today the icing on the cake really showed itself when I went to watch a video stored on my network (not streamed for anywhere mind you - I own the video file) and PLEX proceeded to make me have to watch two advertisements before letting me watch my property. To say I was surprised is an understatement. To say I think that’s just fine would be ridiculous. I have already installed Jellyfin - didn’t even know it existed until another use brought it up in a thread today. I don’t care if it is not perfect because I see PLEX as now un-useable, so its not really even a choice. It was a great run PLEX but I guess we are done. Good bye. I don’t really expect you to last much longer with the decisions you are making.

I’m surprised nothing has been said or done about this update. I don’t know of any official Plex response and the APP is still broken and unusable in many ways.

There was an official response a couple weeks back and they said they have no intentions of rolling it back.

It’s a perfect term to describe what’s happening with Plex, and I (along with many others) respect the words and work of Cory Doctorow.

As opposed to all the other words that were naturally found in the Earth?

It absolutely is.

If you look at Plex’s app store marketing (at least on iOS), it’s not until the 10th/last preview image that mentions your personal media. Once they hit the ceiling on consumers who would pay for a home media server, they needed to take VC money, which demanded a pivot to more profits by getting more eyeballs with social, FAST and VOD content(ads), along with cutting jobs. Businesses became the target profit center, not consumers.

All words, and I do mean every word in every language, was made up by humans at some point in time. Sometimes there isn’t a word and we invent one. It’s done all the time. Just because you don’t like the word does not decrease its use or value for others.

Yes! Cory Doctorow!!

I watched his speech on YouTube at CF 25 and it tracked with what I’ve been observing in tech over the past 15 years. It really is the perfect word.

I’ve already moved onto Apple TV , and Plex works again since it’s on the older version, but too late now. I started on a Jellyfin setup, slowly migrating it to on the weekends as I get time.
