I understand the low initial default settings to Remote Quality. However, my users currently need to change the Quality settings, manually, for every single one of their Plex clients. This setting also resides in different areas, depending on the client.
Users should be given the option, from within the Quality settings screen, to sync their Quality settings across their devices. Naturally, it’d be disabled by default for protecting users’ mobile data quotas.
The setting can come with a warning like, Syncing the Remote Streaming Quality setting to devices with a finite mobile data is not advisable. Streaming higher quality video eats mobile data plans.
Plex can even add an extra CYA measure of specifying, Users acknowledges Plex isn’t responsible for any fees resulting from exceeding monthly data quotas.
Besides syncing the auto-adjust and quality settings, I’d also like to recommend that there be an extra quality setting. That is, Local and Remote Qualities get a 3rd option:
The user should be able to specify quality when connected to Wi-Fi. I’m not sure if the Plex app can detect mobile data usage, but it can detect when a user is connected to Wi-Fi, right?
The default value of that setting is debatable, but the option for users to separately specify Remote Streaming Quality via Wi-Fi vs Remote Streaming Quality via Mobile Data is extremely helpful to their overall experience.
If mobile data usage is undetectable by Plex, the separate Wi-Fi Quality option can still exist, but the current Remote Quality Option would simply stay exactly how it currently exists.
I searched and couldn’t find any similar feature requests but feel free to merge.
