SubStation Alpha subtitles burn in on Auto, when burn in is Disabled they still work?

Server Version# : 1.32.5.7349
Player Version# : 5.67.2

I am trying to play a 4k HDR (10bit) 5.1DD ASS (Subs) on my LG OLED TV (built in Plex app).
Apparently there is some sort of bug with ASS (SubStation Alpha) subtitles in Plex to where Plex wants to burn them in. This unfortunately completely impossible with 4k HDR video since burn in is a single core process and 4K HDR is just too gnarly to get it done for most CPUs since number of cores dont matter. Not only that but it also makes 4K HDR lose a lot of quality due to “Very Fast” transcode.

This basically means subtitles are impossible on LG OLED if they are in ASS format.

Ive been converting them to SRT and that works. Here is ffmpeg command if anyone needs:

ffmpeg -i "input" -map 0 -c:v copy -c:a copy -c:s srt "output.mkv"

But as I was experimenting I set “Burn in Subtitles” within Plex app on LG OLED to “Disabled”. Surprisingly ASS subtitles still worked just fine, and the server was no longer transcoding. It seemed to be working.

So I dont understand why ASS are being transcoded if they actually work?
