Subtitle Issue - Plex App on Firestick

Server Version#: 4.142.1

Having an issue with External SRT subtitles showing on the Plex App on Friestick.

Same video and SRT files give me subtitles on Web Player, and iOS apps… but when I try to watch the same file on Firestick, I get no subtitles.

The SRT file is there, it lets me choose the subtitle track I need, but the subtitles don’t appear. Have tried different firesticks, different Video/SRT files… always the same.

I’m assuming it’s a setting I’m missing on the Firestick?

In the Fire TV Plex app, scroll up on the sidebar menu and click on your user name, select Settings, then scroll down until you get to the Subtitle settings.

That will allow you to adjust the size, colour and background for the subtitles along with the position. You can also override any formatting within the subtitle file.

With a little luck the size/s may be incorrect and not allowing you to see the subtitles.

You can also try setting Burn Subtitles to always, it might help, it might not.

If it’s any consolation I have a Gen2 4K Max and I don’t have any issues with sidecar/external .srt files, they display correctly, including the embedded formatting.

I have not made any changes to the default subtitle settings mentioned above.

No luck… tried 3 different firesticks now… and multiple different movies with subtitles… cant get them to work :frowning:

It’s gotta just be something stupidly simple I’m not doing :stuck_out_tongue:

**Edit: checked Apple TV, Amazon, Netflix and iPlayer on the Firestick… all have functioning subtitles…

Maybe the Fire TV cannot render the subtitles on your TV.

Have you tried it on a different TV?

Make a duplicate of the .srt file, and then open the file in a text editor and remove any formatting from the file and save it.

Put the original file in a safe place and make sure the new file has the same name etc.

Here are some common formatting options found in .srt subtitles:

 • Bold… or {b}…{/b}.
 • Italic… or {i}…{/i}.
 • Underline… or {u}…{/u}.
 • Font color….
 • Line positionX1:… X2:… Y1:… Y2:… (coordinates for text placement after the timestamp).

represents the subtitle text in the examples above.

Don’t forget to Refresh Metadata and Analyse the video file in question, before trying to play it on the Fire TV.

Does that help?
