Server Version#: Centurion Plex Server
Player Version#: 1.1.0.831-e1ae73b1
Good afternoon,
I’ve read several post and few FAQ pages regarding subtitles. I’m still unable to search using different sources (other than opensubtitles which is predefined) , when I hit the search button no matter what I write, nothing comes. That won’t be a problem if I was able to load subtitles. Despite of renaming them as the post tells you to, everytime I hit the load it gives me an error.
So if the archive name is i.e: The.Terror - S02E01 - Infamy - A Sparrow in a Swallow’s Nest.WEBDL-1080p.AAC.h264.tbs.mp4 and I rename the sub as The.Terror - S02E01 - Infamy - A Sparrow in a Swallow’s Nest.WEBDL-1080p.AAC.h264.tbs.eng.srt I understand it should work but it doesn’t. I’ve tried the desktop or the online versions with the same results. Any help?
I had attached a picture of the error in case it helps. Thank you!
I’ve found that SRT subtitles are the best.
And the Avatar example used in the link I gave you is what works.
Once you do get them recognized and loading, you might find a better playback experience if you upgrade to Plex-1.2.0, because our friends have been working on subtitle support a lot. If things are still not as you prefer (color, placement, size), consider using Plex Media Player which has better subtitle support still.

After naming and organizing is corrected, Plex Dance the entire show (not just a season or episode) as mentioned by @nibbles
Plex supports searching for subtitle files, known as On-Demand Subtitle Search. As mentioned in the support article, this feature requires a Plex Pass. As you do not have a Plex Pass (not currently shown beside your name), you cannot use this capability.
Plex also supports downloading subtitles from OpenSubtitles.org. This is configurable in Settings → Agents → Shows → TheTVDB. This requires a free opensubtitles.org account. To enable, select the checkbox next to the opensubtitles.org line, then click the gear to the right and enter you opensubtitles username and password. You will then need to refresh the metadata for the desired TV show(s). Subtitles should download within a few minutes.
If I’m not wrong I’ve done all that to no avail before (yes I read the FAQ and few posts before asking for help). I’ll try it again to read it slowly, redo all the steps and let you know what happened.
Thanks for the swift reply guys!
Oh this was about TV shows. Sorry I mentioned Avatar.
I prefer the s01e02 example, hoping it’s the easiest to match.
Note the article tip says to make sure the SRT files are saved with UTF8 encoding.
It’s understandable that you made the correct choices at some point and got frustrated when it didn’t quite work. That happens to me a lot, but when it comes to Plex, it’s the totality of naming, check boxes, and finally a perfectly executed Dance that make it suddenly work.
The reason is because Plex Server stores a lot of data about your files, and really it just takes the perfect Dance to remove all the remnants. Let us know how it goes.
@FordGuy61 I haven’t been able to locate anything that resembles the path you told me for working through opensubtitles. @nibbles Neither the naming of the file worked.
At this point I’m getting very upset since this should be something very simple to do although it’s showing as an impossible task.
The file name (got it from the info) is: Parks.and.Recreation - S06E02 - London (2).WEBDL-1080p.AAC.h264.DEFLATE.mp4
I renamed the srt file as: Parks.and.Recreation - S06E02 - London (2).WEBDL-1080p.AAC.h264.DEFLATE.eng.srt
Still the system doesn’t allow me to load it. I can’t load subtitles, find them through the search function either, since it states, there are none.
Any other heads up you can think about?
First, let’s have you zip up the SRT and attach it with your reply.
The naming looks okay, but we can’t be sure based on what you provided.
I realize it’s upsetting. Computers will do that. What we can do is make this work
Secondly for testing your naming, the SRT file, and the video file, let’s use VLC. Please download and install that video player for windows, and once you have it installed, double click that episode of Parks and Rec and have it load into VLC and start playing. It should load the subs automatically if the naming is correct.
If it doesn’t load them automatically, let us know. While it’s playing you can use the Subtitles - Subtitle Track... or the Subtitles - Add Subtitle File... menu item to start playing your subs.
Let us know exactly what happens. It’s exciting and maddening, sort of like waiting for Starlord and Aubrey to get together.
Third: please screenshot the directory structure for all of Parks And Rec and the parent directory, and attach the picture with your next reply. We need to see how you nested the directories.
Based on what happens, we will try more solutions. Good luck!
@nibbles I don’t know what you mean about loading into VLC. I do have and use that player but I do not have that chapter in my computer, that’s why I use Plex.
SUB.rar (31.4 KB)
I have uploaded two screeenshots of Plex, where I gather the chapter info from and also the sub in a rar file.
I do not know either about the directory structure. Thank you again for the help.
Hey how’s it. What I meant was VLC is a player like Plex is a player.
I’d like you to exit out of Plex. We won’t be using it for this test.
When you go to videolan.org, download, and then install VLC onto your computer,
it should appear like the rest of your programs on your Start menu.
So you find VLC on the Start menu and click it to start it up.
You should get some small window with a file choosing screen.
Open the Parks and Recreation media file that we’ve been talking about
and have VLC play that.
You will need to Refresh Metadata on the item/series/library if you add/delete/modify any side-loaded sub and/or media items after plex has already scanned them.
No it doesn’t I’m sorry. Since I stated in the previous post I don’t have that Parks and Recreation file on my computer so I don’t know how do you expect me to open it in VLC…
@NewPlaza can you check the screenshots I submitted before and tell me where to do that? Anyway, I can’t upload the subtitle, it keeps giving an error. As you can see in the attached screenshots here.
Yeah I know but I don’t have the file, it’s in the plex server so I can’t do that with the VLC. That’s why this is getting very frustrating as you guys know. Can’t find a solution .
