Subtitle Search Update (OpenSubtitles)

Greetings all,

Yesterday we deployed an update for our subtitle search backend (https://support.plex.tv/articles/subtitle-search/) which now uses the new OpenSubtitles API as their old API will be disabled at the end of the year (OpenSubtitles.org API deprecation and end of life - OpenSubtitles forum)

It should continue working mostly the same as before, and we hope it should actually be a little more reliable. One thing you may notice is that the number provided with the search results will look a little different as this was previously a ā€œscoreā€ value. This value no longer exists in the new API and instead we pass back the download count for that specific result.

We would appreciate any of your feedback or issue reports.

The old version didn’t support searching in Chinese, I wonder if the new version solves this issue?

You shouldn’t need to type a search query in at all, it will use the movies/tv show IDs to match first and only if you type something in will it use that search value.

I’m not sure how OpenSubtitles handles Chinese in search queries, but if it works on OpenSubtitles.com and not inside the Plex search then let us know and we’ll look into it.

Thanks for explaining! I’ve been misunderstanding how the search works. After testing, it turns out it can indeed search for Chinese subtitles. I used to think it was based on file names because the search bar displays file names, but it’s actually using IDs, which makes more sense. About the Chinese search, I double-checked and found that OpenSubtitles.com can only provide precise matches. There might be an issue with translations of Chinese movie titles, causing some translations not to yield results. For example, ā€œShang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Ringsā€ couldn’t be found with the Chinese title ā€œå°šę°”äøŽåēŽÆ传儇ā€ on both OpenSubtitles and Plex. However, using ā€œå°šę°”ā€ alone produced results. So, there’s no problem with Chinese searches. Thanks for clarifying that; I get it now.

Thanks for this, but I am a bit confused. Is this fix just to sort the OS API migration? I have been having the problem that all 3 of my clients (searched) subtitles stop working after 1 or 2 episodes of a series, and refuse to return until several hours or even a whole day has passed - the they work again for a couple more episodes, then repeat. Is this the same problem as addressed by this latest upgrade? many thanks.

Yes it’s migrated to using the new OpenSubtitles API which is completely different to their old one.

As for your issue, I can’t say I’ve seen this before but also not much I can do without any diagnostics, if you see this again please grab your server logs immediately afterwards.

Thanks. My Plex server is running on a seedbox. Trying to get at the server log download via Plex web slient doesn’t work - i get a bad gateway error. I can access the plex app data directory via ftp - could you give me the name of the log file you want please?

What is happening is that my firestick client will download subtitles once or twice as I am watching episodes of a series, but then will stop with an error downloading subtitles error, and then refuse to

Maybe this one in my google drive?

You have permission issues on your host, address that first then we can look if your original issue is still a problem as this may be a cause of many problems.

I have asked the seedbox guys about the /tmp write permission. But I do have FTP access to the logs now. The log I linked above also has permission errors. Could you tell me what sort of permissions I need to ask the seedbox people for? They probably won’t be happy but I can try.

I have updated the latest version. Plex is able to find the appropriate subtitle in the search box, but get ā€œfailed to download subtitleā€ error when I try to download. Attaching logs
