Subtitles do not work on movies or tv shows that were downloaded from my PMS (if I stream them it works fine)

If I play a movie or tv show from Plex on my iOS device, I can turn on subtitles and it works as expected.

However, if I download the movie or tv show so that I can watch the downloaded copy, subtitles will not display even if I turn them on. I can search for subtitles, turn it on, but when I look, it always shows that subtitles are “off” for the particular movie or tv show. If I delete the downloaded copy and just stream it, the subtitles work fine.

Is there some setting I need to change to make subtitles work on downloaded content?
