If I download a movie or TV episode with subtitles and watch it while offline then everything works correctly, including the subtitles.
But if the device is online then the subtitles do not work. It is strange because the subtitles option shows up in the screen before playback but during playback they do not work and in the on screen settings there are no subtitles available. The format of the subtitles seem to be irrelevant, I had the same behavior with SRT and with VOB subtitles.
