Subtitles offset does not work

Server Version#: 1.18.2.2058-e67a4e892 on Raspbian
Player Version#: Web client? Version 4.8.4

I"m using the web app, accessing it on my local network, port 32400.

Subtitles offset does not work, and never did. I can click on -50ms or +50ms as many times as I want, nothing changes. It was the same when I was running Plex Media Server on Debian, and the same when I was running it on ArchLinux. Now it’s running on Raspbian, and it still doesn’t work.

I search the forums and the issues on GitHub (though was it the right repo? GitHub - plexinc/plex-media-player: Next generation Plex Desktop/Embedded Client) and I’m very surprised to see nothing about this issue. Why is it just me T_t?

What can I do to resolve or help resolve this issue?

It ’s not just you. I use the iPhone or iPad as well. There is no response to adding or subtracting the subtitle offset.

Hi @Jay2! In fact to make it work, I have to move forward or backward in the video after having set the offset. If I don’t click somewhere else in the video, the offset is never applied.

Also, the offset is inverted.

+50ms will make subtitles appear sooner, and -50ms will make them appear later, which is counter-intuitive and the inverse of what every other video player is doing  I think there’s already an issue about this on this forum.

I’ve gone both directions, jumped ahead , restarted everything… can’t get it to to take. Where is the solution?

I’m on a Windows server and Android TV (Shield) client, subtitle offset also does not work on this platform. Every time I try to change the offset on a movie, the UI on screen shows “notifying the server about the subtitle offset failed”

I see this problem as well. Windows web client. No change in subtitle negative or positive offset.

I’m getting this too - very frustrating. Any news on a fix?

Same problem on a Samsung tv

Plex on Tizen Samsung TV also has this issue. It does not do anything.

I have tried moving forward or backward after changing the offset. I have downloaded external subs and used the automatic download… Nothing works.

Can confirm. Doesn’t work at all with Samsung Tizen 5.

To the mods - is this issue known?

Same happens on a vizio tv with the latest smarcast and a Linux server running on ubuntu.

I have the same problem on Samsung tv.
I tried every possible solution and none worked.
The problem persists for almost a month and i still have not received any updates of the server or TV app.
Have you guys found any valid solution?

I’m having the same issue with both the web app and with Samsung TV app, but was able to figure out a workaround for the latter:

    • Play your video and set the offset to the desired value (might have to play around with this one if not able to eyeball it)
    • Exit the video and back to the player
    • Play video again. The offset should apply now, but if you look under subtitles again, it shows up empty as if no subs were available.

If you change subtitles or turn off and turn back on it resets back to normal, rinse and repeat until you get it right. This bug is beyond horrible, but workarounds make it bearable!

Hope this helps!

Another user with the same issue in the web client and Android TV. I had the issue for months already… I just switch to Kodi whenever this happens.

Not sure why it works perfectly with Kodi but seems mission impossible withplex

I can confirm that @Davezone method works on Samsung Smart TV Plex App.

This works on an LG TV!
Thank you

I’m experiencing the same problem…
Because of this bug in plex, I think it’s easyer to re-sync the subtitles with software like subtitle workshop…

Is this going to be fixed in plex? is it on the fix-list?

Running Plex server on a Synology box and accessing it from a Samsung TV. Adjusting the subtitle offset used to work a few months back. Since then I updated the Plex server a couple of times and it seems this broke the feature - not it doesn’t work no matter what :frowning:

Same issue on Plex from a Samsung Smart TV (via NAS synology). Found a workaround (No need to exit the video you are playing)

  1. Adjust the offset normally
  2. Go to settings and CHECK AND UNCHECK the option “Allow Directplay” leaving it the same way you had it before.
  3. That’s it! just takes a couple extra seconds.
    Enjoy
