Suddenly cannot connect to my Plex server

Server Version#: 1.29.2.6364-7000
Player Version#: Mac and iPhone Latest Version

Very strange occurrence happened today.

I have been running a Plex server on a Synology NAS for a few years now. Everything has been fine forever but all of the sudden while I was watching a movie, suddenly the movie stopped and the server was gone.

I thought maybe the NAS was powered off, so I checked and it was running as was Plex on it.

I restarted the NAS just in case, but no good.

Please is sitting there running but I just cannot connect to it (via the same wifi server)

I also checked using my iPhone, and I cannot access the server there either (both on wifi and no wifi).

I searched online and one suggestion was to check my Synology shared permissions. I checked, and my media folder is allowing for PlexMediaServer to have read and write permissions. I hit save just to make sure.

I tried signing out of the app on my Mac but signing back in, same issue.

I then found one suggestion to uninstall so I uninstalled, and reinstalled again. I put in a claim server code and the install was fine. When I tried to go back and access Plex, same issue, the server is unreachable.

I cannot access it via a web browser directly on the server either.

Just the weirdest thing.

As for any changes to my network or system, I did the following in the past few days, but Plex was running fine afterwards. Just suddenly today it won’t connect:

  1. I updated my router, a Netgear R6700v3.a few days ago. No weirdness after.

  2. I installed Wordpress on the Synology, but then decided to uninstall it almost immediately after. It had dependencies MariaDB 10, PHP 8.0 and Apache HTTP Server 2.4, which I also uninstalled.

  3. I setup a DDNS via Synology.me, but then decided to delete it, figuring hackers would attack me and that it was not worth the trouble.

That’s it. After those three things, the server was still running fine with no issues.

Then suddenly today, it just stopped. My media is fine, just can’t seem to use Plex at all.

One last thing I tried, I uninstalled again, the first time I did an uninstall only option. The second time, I did a Sign Out and unclaimed this server. When I did that one, I was able to get to the screen where it said to claim my server, however every time I clicked on the claim server button, it would spin trying to claim it then just go back to the Claim server button. I could not claim through the Plex Web app. So I uninstalled again and reinstalled using a claim server code I got directly from Plex website.

So basically after all that, I’m still here with a server that I cannot reach. I do not have a VPN, or any unusual routing on my router. Just a plain and simple setup. Btw, the Synology server is directly connected to the router and the rest I use Wifi.

Hep me please!

Stop PMS

Open FileStation

Navigate: PlexMediaServer/AppData/Plex Media Server

Right-click: “Logs” → “Compress to logs.zip”

When it finishes, download to your computer and then attach (upload here)

I’ll look at why it went silly (if possible)

Logs.zip (1.1 MB)
Hello, here is the log files. Thank you very much

Thanks for the logs.

It was easy to find.

Somehow, you Synology DNS configuration changed.

It can no longer find plex.tv

Ahhh I see. Thank you. I was thinking perhaps it is when I tried to install Wordpress, it must have done something.

I looked again and saw that Web Station was also installed so I uninstalled that and rebooted.

I then uninstalled Plex again and reinstalled it.

Upon launching Plex, I thought that the connection was back but now it does not show my server at all, and I get the button Get Plex Media Server. In settings there is nowhere I can add libraries.

I am using the package center to install Plex, but I do recall a while back I had to do the install manually. So I am wondering if that is my issue now, but enough digressing…

My main question is do you know how I can reset my Synology DNS Configuration? I have been searching but I do not see anything on that… Sorry and Thank you for your help…

In Synology DSM, Control Panel → Network.
General Tab → Manually Configure DNS server.
Suggest using a public DNS, such as 1.1.1.1 (Cloudflare), 8.8.8.8/8.8.4.4 (Google), or 9.9.9.9 (Quad9).

After fixing DNS issues…

Synology FAQ 31: Reset / Reclaim PMS on DSM 7 (Not Authorized - Locked Out)

Uninstall Plex Media Server. After the “are you sure” page, select the “Uninstall Only” (first) option.

Reinstall the same version of Plex Media Server using the Plex Claim Token option. If successful, you will see “Plex Media Server successfully claimed by email address / userid.”

Quick update:

Soooo I went into the control panel, and I changed the DNS to Google DNS Servers (8.8.8.8) and rebooted. Lo and Behold, my server is back and happy as a clam!

Amazingly it’s all back.

Thank you so much for your help! I’ll keep it on Google DNS servers I suppose. Thank you thank you thank you!
