Hi I’m just wondering if Plex media player works on the surface go???
I haven’t tried it on the Go, but I can’t see why not. It has a modern Intel graphics chip (Graphics 615), and should be able to direct play most video formats (but I don’t believe it would play HDR videos in full color). Your bandwidth will be limited by your wifi connection most likely. It might be a bit slow to go through the menus since it’s a budget CPU.
I do have a Go here and could try installing it later, but I won’t get a chance for a few days at least unfortunately.
I can’t find the app on the Microsoft store. I’m also wondering if i can stream 4k on it (considering i have enough internet speed).
The Microsoft store app has been retired. You can download the latest version of Plex Media Player here:
You will need to enable hardware acceleration after installing it, but unfortunately I don’t have the time to spell the details out here. You need to change it into “TV mode”, go into the settings there, and enable hardware acceleration and deinterlacing. You might be able to search here for someone else who explained it.
There’s also a replacement product called “Plex for Windows”, which you can download at the Plex site. However I can’t recommend it for the Surface Go right now because it doesn’t offer acceleration, and the Surface Go CPU probably isn’t strong enough otherwise.
Thanks for your help and advice i really appreciate.
I’m considering buying a second hand go for 599 AUD (keyboard, gel skin, protective glass and pouch included) 128gb 8gb ram.
I read that if you install software not on the Microsoft store you need to put it out of the s mode and that apparently affects your batteries.
Would you say that the Go isn’t ideal then for plex viewing?
That is absolutely correct!
It definitely can affect your battery time but it’s not a guarantee. For example, when on battery, you’ll get a longer amount of time to watching a video when playing it on a native store app like the built-in “Movies and TV” App than you would if you downloaded VLC and used it to watch the exact same video. But even with VLC you’d get a good amount of time.
So I think it’s reasonable to say that Plex Media Player would run down your battery faster than a native Windows app would, but you should also get a decent amount of time on the tablet.
That’s a tough one. In some ways I think it might work quite well. I wish I had time to install it and give it a test run but I’m tied up most of this weekend.
I’m hoping that someone else here has used PMP on the Surface Go and can perhaps give some real world knowledge. Anyone?
I’ve decide to wait till Tuesday to make my decision on the purchase . If you have time by then to try it out and letting me know about your experience that would be very kind and appreciated , thank you again for your help and thanks in advance for your experience review with PMP on the go.
Hi just wondering if you had time to try plex on your surface go
Unfortunately not yet! My schedule has been packed. I’m honestly not sure when I’ll have time for it yet. I was really hoping someone else here had one, too.
I have recently tried running it on my Surface Go 8GB model. To put short it works but not so great. The plex app runs really bad, lag when scrolling and slow transitions between menus. However, once your in a video its not bad, it plays pretty solid. Aside from the touch screen player controls being bad. It works but wouldn’t recommend as your main device.
Just curious, is this using Plex Media Player or Plex for Windows?
Plex for Windows
Edit:
Just tried Plex Media Player and the same results/performance as Plex for Windows. The TV mode in Media Player doesn’t support touch screen when scrolling media.
Plex doesn’t really support touch screens in general on Windows. They retired that in favor of Plex for Windows.
