I recently picked up a Surface Go (8GB/128GB) with a 400GB MicroSD card as a media consumption device. Of course, the first thing I did was put Plex on it and started syncing over shows. I’ve verified the shows are actually synced over (I can get to them by going to Status and selecting the show and then playing the episode), but I don’t see anything when viewing “This device” in Locations. No libraries and nothing on the home screen other than instructions to pick a library.
I’m running Windows 10 1809, and the latest Store version of Plex, but it looks like it was last updated in 2017.
Server Version#: 1.14.1.5488
Player Version#: 3.2.20-25590c77
Looking online, it looks like the latest Windows version of Plex Media Player is from 2/2019. It’s a vastly different application, though, allowing for server management as well as playback. It’s nice, but the UI elements are huge on it; clearly, it was intended for larger screens than the Surface Go. On top of that, it doesn’t support syncing.
Is development of the store app just dead, with no intention of fixing bugs?
I’d switch to something else, except that I have share my Plex server with friends, and have access to theirs as well. Plus, I’m a lifetime Plex Pass member, and I don’t want to spend another $120 to get the same features with Emby. I’m more likely to return the Go and put it towards and iPad Pro than I am to drop Plex. Talk about ecosystem lock-in…
Haha, yes, an iPad is more expensive than Emby; I’m not arguing that. But I share too much through Plex with others, and have access to their servers as well. The money is just the icing on the “I’m not going to switch” cake.
And to be clear: I didn’t mean to type “iPad Pro”. I started typing “Surface Pro” (I was distracted) and went back and changed “Surface” to “iPad” (while still distracted) and didn’t remove the “Pro”. I could trade in my Surface Go and easily pick up an iPad for what I paid.
The world of Android tablets is just sad, so I wouldn’t even consider going that route. lol
