Switching between Plex accounts on an established server

Whenever I try to log out of my account, then log in with my other Plex account, Plex web can’t find my server.
I even tried uninstalling it, removing the entire Plex directory, reinstalling a new server version, and it still will not find it. I log right back in with my original user ID and wham, it finds it. Why is this, and can this be remedied?
ps - If I log into Windows with another acct. on the same PC/server and launch Plex web, then log into Plex with that 2nd account, it finds the server no problem. So it’s only after initially logging in with 1 plex ID on the server, then logging out and logging in with another ID that makes the server not be found. Odd.

Plex server is signed in with ones account. Server belongs to someone. So user A sign in server, user B can’t take it over.
User A can share library/libraries with user B but user A stays admin of that server until you sign out server from user A account.
You can always access server via localhost:32400/web on the machine server is running on. Or via app.plex.tv only when server is signed on with same account.
What is that you trying to achieve because sign in and out from server ain’t solution.

Yeah this has nothing to do with sharing the server, just having PLEX “LOCATE” the server. It keeps spinning trying to locate it when I’m signed in as another Plex account.
I sign back in as Plex user A, it finds it lickedy split. I sign in as Plex user B, it spins and never locates the local server. Can’t figure out why. But if I log into WINDOWS as another Windows user, set up a new instance of Plex, it has no problem finding the local server. IS there some Secure ID associated with every instance of the Plex server that only 1 ID can be associated with it?

@“Bartlomiej Baraniec” explained it already above:
other plex accounts don’t have access to your server.
Only the user which is also used to connect the server to plex.tv is able to see and browse.

If you need access from other plex.v accounts, then ‘share’ this server with them.

Then is there any reason to have a LOG OUT option on the server?
Why would you ever need to Log out?

For the rare occasion that you indeed need to switch accounts or when you are preparing for a longer period without internet connectivity.

But then logging in with another account if you need to switch accounts won’t work, correct? As discussed above. It doesn’t find the server.
Not even uninstalling the plex server allows me to find the local server under another account. This is all academic, I’m just trying to find reason behind it because it forced me to create a new windows profile to make Plex work under a different Plex ID.

The server is one thing that signs into plex.tv
Your web browser with the Plex ‘web app’ is another thing that signs into plex.tv
The two are independent.
But they must both use the same plex.tv credentials for the browser to be able to see the server.

Which plex.tv account the server is using, is stored in the Windows Registry.

If you delete the keys

  • PlexOnlineHome
  • PlexOnlineMail
  • PlexOnlineToken
  • PlexOnlineUsername

from it, the server is ‘signed out’

see https://support.plex.tv/articles/204281528-why-am-i-locked-out-of-server-settings-and-how-do-i-get-in/

But again, that is an action you should not do regularly. There is just no need for it.

Hi,
I had this issue as well, then after reading this thread, I had a bit of insight. Thanks guys!
If you go to Settings with the account that sees the server, you will see “Server signed in as”. You can click the “Sign Out” button next to that, which then releases your server as “unclaimed”. You can then log off the web management interface with this account, log in with your other user (which didn’t see the server) and then you should be able to see the server and “claim” it.
Yeah, it’s totally cumbersome for everyday use, but as another poster said, this is not something which should need to be done frequently. I had to do it only a couple of times to get something setup.
Hope this helps!

Hi,

Reopened this topic only to thank partypooper88 for his intelligent insight! I’m sure it helped a lot of people, included myself.

Thanks so much for this, saved my day

Yes, thanks partypooper88 - Very helpful indeed!

Note there are two Settings buttons, you should say you’re speaking of the one in the left hand pane, not that in the top right-hand header… Easy to overlook!

This is the solution! Thanx
