Plex windows 10 store app vs regular download version

I downloaded Plex Media Player as a plex pass member and installed that, but later discovered that there’s another Plex player available on Windows 10 app store. Can someone please tell me if there’s any differences between the 2 versions? Not sure why there’s 2 different versions.

Which one is better?

The Plex Media Player is the better viewer because it will “direct play” any media format you throw at it. The Windows Store App has a better interface IMO. A lot of which is better comes down to personal preferences and how you use Plex.

They got a Windows 10 app that is in beta now that’s not accessible, and from what I read it will be like the store app in a way but more designed for Windows 10 rather than 8. I hope it can play any codec or container you throw at it, so it will end my dilemma on which player to use

The store app is designed for tablets and touch as it also has mobile sync, something PMP doesn’t have.

@quisp65, the new app is now available

Is there any word on codec/container support in the new UWP app? Would really like to hope for direct play on all my Windows devices in the future:)

Is there a way to change the defaults of the new interface? For my kids using plex on the tablet of more complicated now.
Is it possible to change the default view on an library from “Discover” to “Browse”?
Also getting back to a library from within a playing movie is not easy on tablets.

We’ll be releasing an update in the future that will have the app remember whether you were using browse or discover last.

What kind of problems are you seeing with going back on a tablet? If you swipe up from the bottom of the screen to get the windows task bar you can use the back button to navigate back to the movie screen.

It’s hard to tell but the new UI somehow feels like you need more steps to get to an episode and also more steps to get back to another show.
If the app remembers to show the “Brows” view then this would be a very nice feature. Or otherwise make it an option in the interface config.

The new app actually required less clicks in every case that I know of. At any time you can get to any library by clicking on the left menu, where the old app required you to click back a possible of 7 times.
And to get back to a season etc, notice that you can click the breadcrumbs at the top (“TV Shows > Archer > Season 3”).

Yes, the breadcrumbs are nice. And the app is realy well made and looks like it’s been designed vor Windows 10.
For my 3 year old daughter, not able to read yet, the navigation on the old app with the back arrow was simpler to use. She’s not aware of how to swipe from the top or bottom to get to the app- or Windows navigation bars.
Maybe a “Kids” mode with simple UI would be a nice option.

We’ll look into making the tablet experience for back a bit better, thanks!

Is there anyway to download the app directly and not from the Windows store?

I really don’t want to have to create yet another account.

@Carlos-Spicy-Weiner, no, there is not.

Ugh, that really sucks.

Thanks for the info.

Plex from the windows store looks much better than the web application. Unfortunately, the quality of the operation is much worse. The film in the original quality runs for a very long time. For some time, the program turns off when I select the option menu. I do not know why the application has not been updated for almost 2 years. For me it should be a basic application on w10.

What we suspected was finally announced officially: Windows Store app is dead:

minus for plex.

Long time Plex Pass user.

The Windows app is far ahead of the stand alone version and yet it hasn’t been updated for years

The Store version loads and runs faster and smoother, better UI and more intuitive plus doesn’t drop settings etc

A shame it won’t see further development

I had a list of improvements for the store version but not much use now

I’ll revert to Kodi as a player as the stand alone Plex Player is atrocious
