Synology DS720+ Cannot Access Plex Media Server

Server Version#: 1.25.0.5246-7000
Player Version#: 1.24.5.5173

I’ve been researching for hours and just cannot figure this out. I have Plex Media Server running on both my laptop and my Synology DS720+ and I can see them both when I am in Plex on my laptop. As long as my laptop is running, I can access Plex from any device and play movies without a problem.

However, when my laptop is off, I no longer have access to my movies.

  1. I am unable to launch Plex Media Server from Synology. I believe it is installed correctly and I have given the PlexSystemInternal user access to my Shared Folder on the NAS that contains my media.
  2. When I click on Plex Media Server from the Synology desktop when I’m signed into QuickConnect, it tries to load the tab for a couple minutes and results in a “This site can’t be reached” error. I get this with the VPN connected and disconnected.

I’m attaching logs, but please let me know if you need anything else. I appreciate everyone’s helpPlex Media Server.log|attachment (1.8 MB)

Please do the following:

  1. Ignore the laptop Plex for now.

  2. VPN OFF

  3. On the Synology

  2. File Station

  • Navigate PlexMediaServer/AppData/Plex Media Server
  • Right-click “Logs” → “Compress to Logs.zip”
  • Download the ZIP file
  1. Attach the ZIP file here.

Hi Chuck!

I’m sorry for the delay. Here are the logs. Please let me know if you need anything else and thanks so much for your help.

Thanks,
Luke

@Legend339

Are these logs correct? You’ve not been able to start the server since Dec 24, 2021 until its shutdown on 15th Jan?

Right. I’m able to start the server on Synology and it says it’s running. I just haven’t been running it since I knew that it wouldn’t work and I’d have to run Media Server off my laptop if I wanted to stream to my Apple TV.

Please explain this or could you spare a minute to recreate it so I can see the failure in the logs?

Absolutely! And just to clarify, here is my setup and what I’m trying to do.

  1. I have an Apple TV 4K with Plex that is my main streaming device.
  2. I have an ASUS ROG G14 laptop that has Plex and Plex Media Server installed.
  3. I have a Synology DS720+ that holds all of my movies and I have Plex Media Server installed there as well.
  4. When Plex Media Server is running on my laptop, I’m able to stream movies to my Apple TV without any issues.
  5. When I turn off PMS on my laptop, Plex on Apple TV cannot see the movies on the Synology.
  6. My goal is to have PMS running solely on my Synology so I am always able to access my movies without needing my laptop to run at all.

I’m attaching the screenshots of what I see in my browser when I try and open PMS from Synology, where I’m trying to open it from, and the latest logs.

Please let me know if you need anything else.

Thanks!

Please don’t use QuickConnect.to to setup/access the NAS initially.

Plex has security which prevents remote IP/domains (which “QuickConnect.to” is).

DSM 7 changed / broke this functionality and there’s nothing I can do to get around it.

Open it by the LAN IP address.
Sign it in and Claim it.

Once done, you can then use QuickConnect.to however you wish.

Thank you so much! Signing into the web app and claiming it worked like a charm. I really appreciate you!
