Synology: DSM 7 Installation Archive -- Archived from main thread

Open a new tab to the Syno

Now open Migration.log in the Plex shared folder :slight_smile:

When done, you’ll get:

It’s moving the files now

Great success!

Library is back, all my watched info is good, and at least one show came up for watching. My migration log file never showed the data in your post, still doesn’t, but all appears well now.

I feel like I know what happened now, but in any case, I can’t thank you enough for your help. If there’s a way for me to contact your management and give you kudos, please let me know how that works.

Help appreciated. I followed instructions at PLEX migration with DSM 7 page. Old Plex migration seemed to be successful, but now I have encountered the following issues:

  1. Cannot add any new folder to Plex libraries. Says something like unable to save the setting.

  2. Tried to delete one Photos Plex library altogether. Not sure if this was successful, still stuck at it after 12 hours.

  3. Now cannot access Plex libraries any more, possibly related to that previous no 2 library deletion process?

After all this pain of Plex migration, perhaps a dumb question - can I forget about migrating and just do a “clean” install? Just to build all Plex libraries from scratch? Would that solve the DSM7-Plex issues or still not?

Update: Stopped and started Plex Media Server in DSM and now I can access my Plex libraries again. But I deleted my Photos library and tried to add it again. Selected the correct folders and added them to Photos library. But it keeps saying that Photos library is empty. Of course, the underlying photo files are still on NAS and well.

Does System Internal User PlexMediaServer have access ?

If you’re using the default Synology photos shared folder – Recommend making a new shared folder named how you want. Synology likes to keep exclusive access to their predefined shaers.

Thank you for the prompt reply. I think, I have given the necessary access rights, see the images. Re new shared folder - after making a new shared folder, should I copy all the existing photos to this new shared folder?

Why are you showing the shared folder PlexMediaServer?

That shared folder is for exclusive use by PMS itself.

It’s not for any media whatsoever

The shared folder ‘photo’ , if that’s your new shared folder, is correct.
That’s all you need to do for permissions.
Next you can move your files into it

Why are you showing the shared folder PlexMediaServer?

Yes, you are right. As a no-IT guy, I do not understand the meaning of all those folders and included both, just in case.

The shared folder ‘photo’ , if that’s your new shared folder, is correct.

Actually that is the old, default photo folder. Not able to add this to my Plex photo libraries and when trying to add, I cannot see subfolders inside it. I understand from other forums, that this has something to do with folder permissions in old Synology DS Photos and as DS Photos is not available under DSM 7 and DSM 7 cannot override the old permissions, this is a dead end.

But creating a new shared folder might be solution. I created one and added 10 photos to test it out and it seems working fine. Before copying 760GB or over 100k photos to a new folder, I need to consider couple of things. Synology Photos uses personal and shared spaces and this is tied to this default ‘photos’ shared folder and it is not possible to set another custom shared folder as a destination. So if I start using a new shared folder I get Plex access but will lose Synology Photos access. Maybe it is possible to delete the original photos folder and rename the new folder again ‘photos’. But this is more like Synology related issue. Thanks for your Plex related answers anyway.

Sorry for the confusion.

Synology really changed things up with DSM 7.

By all appearances, it looks like they want to create a fully closed solution which is either their apps or 3rd party (to which they do not particularly care for)/

Currently running DSM 6.2.4-25556 Update 3 and Plex 1.25.3.5409-6000 on a DS920+. Having read this entire thread, being an IT guy and also a having a serious amount of time and effort invested in getting my Plex where I want it to be, I have no desire to upgrade to DSM 7. My question is If I wait long enough will the Plex installer “just sort out the mess” and just work without the pain/risk/anxiety of losing my Plex content and/or undoing all of the custom stuff?

  1. The changes we made were forced by DSM 7’s complete architectural change for apps.

  2. The installer does not have ‘root’ (administrator) privilege in DSM 7 and therefore will never be able to “just sort out the mess” itself. It’s completely NON-PRIVILEGED now. You WILL have to help it.

  3. The procedure, when followed, works. You don’t lose any data. It might take a lot of time but it won’t fail

  4. Did you read the release info and migration instructions ? Did you notice how the installer gives step-by-step instructions of what you need to do?

  1. The task for you, the user/administrator, is succinct.
    – “Give System Internal User ‘PlexMediaServer’ ‘Full Control’ of the “Plex” shared folder”. (MUST check the ‘apply to this folder, sub-folders and files’ checkbox)
    – Once done (for all sub-folders and files), the installer will be able to process through all the changes it needs without user involvement and without error.
  • If you forget, you will get ‘System Error 0’ and need to clean up and run it again.
  • If you interrupt it, the state of the migration will need be evaluated to determine how to reset (recover) before running again.
  1. The amount of time required is dependent on
    – speed of the HDDs
    – amount of data already existing in the “Plex” shared folder

  2. Processing time is about 3 minutes per each 1000 media items (regardless of type) indexed by Plex.
    – Count up all your media (movies, episodes, other videos, music tracks, and photos)
    – Divide by 1000
    – Multiply by 3 → Approximate time, in minutes, the installer needs to process and move the metadata.
    (e.g. 10,000 items total / 1000 =10; 10 * 3 = 30 minutes)

  3. Given the time required and anxiety it causes, Read and ASK QUESTIONS

  4. Don’t panic if anything doesn’t go as expected. Only those who went rogue lost data.

  5. Even “IT guys” can be uneasy because you don’t yet understand how it works internally.

  6. During the migration, you’ll see ‘Migration.log’ in the Plex share. It’ll appear about 2 minutes after the migration states (DSM is slow at presenting it sometimes)

It looks like this (using Syno Text Editor app)

Plex Media Server migration to DSM 7 started: Sat Oct 30 15:26:16 EDT 2021
=== Sat Oct 30 15:26:16 EDT 2021 === Start: Change ownership
=== Sat Oct 30 15:29:45 EDT 2021 === Completed: Change ownership
=== Sat Oct 30 15:29:45 EDT 2021 === Start: Convert symbolic links
=== Sat Oct 30 15:34:41 EDT 2021 === Completed:  Convert symbolic links
=== Sat Oct 30 15:34:41 EDT 2021 === Start: Migrate Plex Media Server
=== Sat Oct 30 15:34:41 EDT 2021 === Completed: Migrate Plex Media Server
=== Sat Oct 30 15:34:41 EDT 2021 === Start: Clean /volume1/Plex
=== Sat Oct 30 15:34:41 EDT 2021 === Completed: Clean /volume1/Plex

When it’s done Cleaning, it’s done.

You WILL get a popup “Installation Successful” – AND the Plex shared folder will be empty when all your data has been migrated.

If you get a success statement but your data was left in the Plex share , then you missed something.

By backing up, cleaning up the rogue DSM 7 install (which the installer does allow you to do), you can then install again and watch it engage (sits at “Installing”).

Hi All, i’ve just updated my DSM to v7 (on Ds115j)and i’m strugling to reinstall also PMS from scratch (no migration needed)

In particuarly my problem is that i see the media folder empty

Obviously i followed the step-by-step guide for installation and i can confirm that the PlexMediaServer user have R/W permisions as described. After installation i have created a folder for my media (also on this there are R/W permission)that contains only 10 files(about 4.5gb).
After first configuation steps of PMS, configuring also the library with the folder above, i can’t see the media itself inside my library.
I have also restarted my NAS and Plex application without succes.
Plex version is the last available 1.25.4.5487 on DSM 7.0.1-42218 Update 2
I have attached also the portion of log file where PMS start to scan the library until the process will finish and it seems that media are found but not added to library.
Log.txt (13.6 KB)

Many thanks for the reply. I have read the instructions and I am confident I could follow them. It is a shame that Synology have turned their back on the 3rd party app providers as most people buy the dam things for apps like Plex as it’s so awesome. It makes sense that manual intervention is always going to be required because of the fundamental changes that they have made to DSM.

My reservations around doing the DSM upgrade are two fold
number 1 is that I have run out of backup space so I am not 100% backed up and number 2 is a sprinkling of users mentioning that they have lost customisations, artwork, agents mis-matching stuff and general issues with metadata. Also being asked to update libraries without any real way back or undo button. If I had to recreate that stuff I think I would lose interest in Plex very quickly and probably move to something else. If there was a way to backup all of that metadata and be able to restore it to a fresh install it would give me more confidence.

I have had a fantastic experience with Plex and I love it so much. But I fear that when making large scale changes like this sometimes there is no way to get back to where you were without having to manually redo stuff.

@s34b455

The folks who lost their data often were by their own actions.

I’ve already seen one user, who had over 500GB of metadata, require 2 weeks to complete migration.

When all was said & done
 NOTHING WAS LOST. It was 100%

It took so long because DSM, in it’s infinite wisdom, decided to COPY the files one at a time rather than MOVE the directory over (as it’s written in the code)

There have been a few cases where migration hasn’t engaged and I’ve extended special 1:1 help for those folks to fix their Plex share (created under DSM 4 / DSM 5 ) so it would work with DSM 7 ( A huge design oversight on Synology’s part )

Fundamental –

  1. As long as you have your metadata in the “Plex” shared folder – you’re safe because I will never delete that when uninstalling the app (the erase option).

  2. Once migrated to DSM 7, the Erase option is dangerous when not used as intended. It is the “Full Reset” switch folks have requested.

I’m always here to answer questions and help.

@ChuckPa
Just a quick update
 Into the folder configured for my media contents, there is also a subfolder with the video files.
Added also this subfolder and magically my library start to populate
 It could be possible that PMS doesn’t manage subfolders anymore??

@nitro980

You must give it the proper TOP folder.
If you have /videos/movies and /video/tv, giving it only /videos, it will get confused.

Giving it /videos/movies for a Movies library and /videos/tv for a TV library work as expected.
