Just received my first synology today and boy is DSM 7 giving me a great evening. I installed plex improperly at first, through the package center. Started seeing your posts after it didn’t work, uninstalled and reinstalled using the website. Have the 720+ so I grabbed the 64 bit installer using my windows pc and manually installed it. Tried to read as many comments as I could about permissions and stuff and I feel like I’ve tried as much as I can think of and still getting the “not authorized” error.
Edit: Took a break, came back and slowly read the FAQ again. The issue resolved at the IP address search so I must’ve been doing something wrong the first few times. Thanks so much for the excellent FAQ. Would gladly pay the question fee
Thanks Chuck for your reply.
Ok, so if i have my folder like videos/tv and inside it other folders for each shows, plex can’t recognize them? I need to add every folder that contain one or more files? (eg. if i have a tv series with more than one season organized in folders eachone i need to add evrery folder of each season?)If yes it seems that plex is unable to handle it.
The relative structure is the same. Only the attach point (what you tell Plex) changes.
One word of caution – don’t use the Synology pre-defined shared folders. They always cause problems because of Video Station/Audio Station/ Photo Station.
Hi, just came across this thread after I unwittingly updated my DSM 6 to DSM 7, without first looking to see how it would affect Plex.
The DSM upgrade is done – and apparently I should’ve uninstalled Plex before doing the upgrade. I haven’t touched Plex or anything on my DS217+ NAS since I upgraded. What do I need to do now, to ensure Plex works?
This thread is super long and I’m having trouble finding instructions on what to do in my instance. Can someone point me to the right post where I can follow instructions to make sure Plex works after I’ve upgraded to DSM 7 without first uninstalling Plex? I appreciate any help.
Trying this now, thanks. Weird part is I didn’t get an error when re-installing Plex Media Server. Right now I just changed the permissions for the user, and am waiting for it to finish.
I didn’t change any permissions before I started - I simply uninstalled Plex from Package Center, then reinstalled via manual install per your previous post. And it just finished just fine. Weird. Now just waiting for the API issues to go away to try and get it going and see what happens.
That’s what I expected given you didn’t change any permissions.
I also suspect you now have an errant (maybe 2 errant) DSM 7 installations.
Those aren’t hard to resolve.
As long as you have your metadata in the Plex shared folder (which you showed you do)
Uninstall DSM 7 package with ERASE option to remove that PMS server data.
Manual install again.
Expect it to sit for a protracted time (3 minutes for each 1000 items you have indexed in plex) -OR- early exit popup message(s) with instructions about what you need to do (changing permissions for the Plex share).
Make one round of this now.
Uninstall the DSM 7 app with ERASE option
Install again
If it prints error messages (in the popup). follow those instructions because they are tailored to your machine.
When the installer is happy that all conditions are right, it will sit at “Installing” for a while and the “Migration.log” file will appear in the Plex shared folder after about 3 minutes.
I upgraded from DMS 6.2 to DMS 7 yesterday without considering Plex at all. After some googling I did the permissions settings as listed below. All runs fine except when I try to record a television show (on ‘Live TV & DVR’) I get a “There was a problem saving your changes. Please try again” error message when I hit record in my TV Guide. This worked fine before the DSM upgrade.
Is there a fix for this? I’d like to avoid uninstalling plex and re-installing Plex if at all possible.
One thing I noticed is previously I had a Plex directory only before upgrading DSM. I now have both Plex (which holds my media files) and a PlexMediaServer directory which seems to hold the server files. Not sure if this is normal. I checked the permissions described below for both these directories. As I said, all works except I cant add a new “recording”. Existing scheduled recordings seem to work fine.
Thanks for all the help, this did end up working (kind of), Plex had to rescan all my media - but no big deal (I think because I changed the server name?). Server seems to be back up and running normally.
The only thing you need is to grant user PlexMediaServer permission to read each media shared folder. (as shown in the final popup after migration completed)
Server name (friendly name) can be anything you want. The ID numbers in Preferences.xml are what matter and give it its unique identity for sharing
Okay, I’m having all sorts of trouble with missing photo thumbnails, and think I just want to nuke this whole thing and start from scratch. How do I completely remove all evidence of PMS, metadata, libraries, etc?
I tried uninstalling the package/erasing, and removing the shared folders of Plex and PlexMediaServer, but after re-installing it seems there are still some remnants of Plex somewhere.
Can you guide me into how to completely remove all evidence PMS was ever on here, so I can just start from scratch? Sigh.
I am in Version 1.25.4.5487 with an 1817 + and 16go of memory the plex script closes by itself randomly and I cannot find the explanation are there other people who have the same thing? If so can you solve this problem and how?
