To downgrade:
- Uninstall the app, Select the Uninstall Only option in the menu.
- Now install the lower version.
- When PMS starts, give it an extra 30 seconds or so for it to adjust itself internally.

Just upgraded to DSM 7 from DSM 6 and I’ve clearly done something wrong.
Set up:
DS 918+
DSM 7.1-42661
PlexMediaServer-1.26.0.5715-8cf78dab3-x86_64_DSM7
It’s working, in that I have been able to add libraries and Plex is currently indexing them. This is of course taking ages.
I have clearly missed a step in which my old library in the Plex shared folder gets imported. It’s still there and i also have a PlexMediaServer shared folder.
If someone could please point me to instructions to reinstall Plex so that it picks up the old indices, that’d be awesome.
It sounds like the permissions on the “Plex” shared folder were manually set at some point and when upgrading to DSM 7, the new installer (because it isn’t administrator anymore) couldn’t read the shared folder.
The remedy for this, assuming your DSM 6 -based server is fully intact in the “Plex” shared folder, is:
Now follow “Scenario 2” as shown here.
Your goal is to update the permissions for all folders and files in the “Plex” share and grant “PlexMediaServer” (the new service username) Full Control of all files.
Be patient with this … It will take 2-3 minutes for each 1000 media items you have index by PMS
Many thanks, I’ll give that a try.
I hope you’re recovering well from Covid BTW.
I am , I hope, almost over the lingering cough.
It’s not been fun. Thanks for the kind words.
As for the installation & migration,
It does take time. We don’t have ‘admin’ privileges on DSM 7 (Syno changed that).
We can’t force anything to happen / fix permissions like we could with DSM 6 so I have to rely on following the procedures built into the new installer.
I hope you like the install package. It’s a full rewrite, supporting 8 languages now, with menus, and gives context-sensitive feedback as it does it’s job
Covid: good to hear. Nasty lil sod that virus.
Took a few hours (~85,000 files so I was expecting that) but it’s all running sweetly now. Install package made it very easy — can’t ask for better than that.
Thanks for your help!
Excellent.
How do you like the new menus?
Are they clear and easy to understand?
I thought today, there hasn’t been a (Synology) PMS update for awhile, checked my server and it says
Version 1.25.8.5663 Checking for Updates
It never gets any further than Checking
I see that 1.26.0.5715 is available - am I OK to install this manually?
1.25.9 is public release.
1.26.0 is beta
You should see at least one of them . Is DSM communicating correctly to the internet? (Everything plays and authenticates OK otherwise?)
You can update to whichever version you wish
I manually downloaded 1.26.0.5715 but then my server ‘caught up’ and allowed me to officially download 1.26.0.5715 so I went ahead and installed that - my server now says it is at 1.25.9.5721.
@ChuckPa It says in the installation instructions not to install DSM 7.1 since beta versions is not supported. But now it seems that 7.1 is released so just wondering if it safe to upgrade or we should wait? I’m already on 7.0 with plex running.
Thanks!
Now that DSM 7.1 is public release, you’re good to go.
It’s been our experience that DSM 7.x beta releases are not something we can support.
I went crazy trying to support DSM 7.0 throughout its different beta releases.
It was decided we will extend not supporting BETA OS releases to NAS products.
***Edit - all sorted had to manually install the latest DSM 7.1-42661, My DSM was telling me I had the latest DSM when it wasn’t…
***Original post
DSM version: DSM 7.0.1-42218 Update 3
NAS: Synology DS418j
CPU: Realtek RTD1293 SoC
I updated to DSM 7 but not sure what version i was on before, I hadn’t updated for a long time.
It all seemed to go smoothly and I can access my network shares via windows but plex no longer works.
Plex server isn’t installed on my NAS. I’ve tried downloading all the synology (DSM 7) files from here: https://www.plex.tv/en-gb/media-server-downloads/
I wasn’t sure which one i needed so I’ve tried manually installing them via the package centre but they all say:
‘This package is not supported on the platform of disk station or is incompatible with the current version of DSM’
Not sure what to do. Is my NAS incompatible with the latest plex server, it is quite old.
For the DS418j, you want the ARMv8 (64 bit) package.
I have one of these which I use as my development system.
Suddenly Plex stopped working, I didn’t updated it or made any changes. It simply stopped working. Attaching here the logs hoping someone can help figure out what’s wrong.

Hi,
I seem to be unable to update Plex on my NAS (DS 920+) anymore.
Already in the first step of the update process (which is only uploading the file), the upload thingy is stuck on Processing… Please Wait…
I have waited for hours, but it doesn’t continue any further. When I close the browser, there is no indication I ever tried updating.
I stopped PMS before running the update again, but that didn’t prove to be a solution. Help! I don’t know where to start solving this issue?
Patrick,
“Processing” will occur if you’re updating from an older version of PMS (any DSM 7 version prior to 1.22.4.4973).
What it’s doing is completing the restructuring of the “PlexMediaServer” shared folder.
I did this because , after DSM 7.0 was “Final Release”, I could complete the restructuring / moving from the “Plex” shared folder and put everything in its new location (PlexMediaServer/AppData)
As long as you don’t interrupt this, it will complete naturally.
I wish there was a way to have DSM / Package Center print a popup warning before starting but I could never figure out how to accomplish it.
Dear @ChuckPa
Thanks for your quick reply and explanation.
It is still running now, for over 24 hours. I have libraries of a little less than 1TB combined. I also see no real activity on the NAS in CPU usage. I’m wondering if this is correct. Thanks in advance for your advice!
Btw I’m updating from a version 24 to 26.0. I installed 24 from scratch (so not as an update).
Same thing!!! Last week it was working in the AM and then it was not in the PM. My NAS says its running and I can access http://192.168.254.5:32400/web/index.html#!/ but it does not even show that it is a Plex server. I get a “+ Your Media” option to install a server http://192.168.254.5:32400/web/index.html#!/get-plex-media-server
It’s possible your browser got stuck. (I’ve seen that happen).
Open another tab to the Diskstation.
Next open the Resource Monitor - Task Manager - Processes
Sort the list alphabetically by name (left column).
Is Plex running ?
