Synology: DSM 7 Installation Archive -- Archived from main thread

I have done that a few times…still same. Any other suggestions?

Have you done what it instructed?

  1. Sign out of DSM
  2. Close your browser COMPLETELY
  3. Open browser fresh
  4. Sign in to DSM desktop

Tried it and same error. Also, have restarted the server and same result.

In my quest to fix over the last few days and before I contacted you I did rename the Plex share and user account to “PlexMediaServer” and then changed it back. Could that be causing an issue?

YES…

PlexMediaServer should NOT be a user account.
DSM 7 creates and manages the PlexMediaServer shared folder. Plex doesn’t.

DSM 7 is an entirely different environment than DSM 6.
We cannot go messing around in DSM 7 without fully understanding everything that changed. This is a whole new environment.

In DSM 7, the installer doesn’t have any privileges anymore. DSM 7 must do all the work.

In light of what you’ve just shared, I now need to see the Linux-level info about PlexMediaServer

  1. Task Scheduler
  2. Create a user-defined script task
  3. Runs as root user
  4. Emails you the result (In Settings tab)
  5. Contents of script are:

grep -i plex /etc/passwd /etc/group

synoshare -get PlexMediaServer

synoacltool -get /volume*/PlexMediaServer

Run this once then disable it.

I had renamed both the user and share back to “Plex”…so at this time everything is how it was in DSM 6. Do you still want me to run this?

YES, I want you to run it.

You made changes to your DSM 7 PMS configuration without understanding how DSM 7 worked

Now we need to figure out HOW TO FIX what you broke.

Be advised, this is likely to be a lot of steps

I ran it with “Plex” versus “PlexMediaServer” in the script. Hopefully is in your mailbox.

The email address shown was an example only.

Please post the output in the PM I just opened to you. (upper right green dot)

Just tried to do the upgrade from DSM 6 → 7 plus upgrading Plex.

I followed the directions exactly, but things didn’t work as expected and my Plex server is not working now.

Specifically:

  • When I first ran the installer (PlexMediaServer-1.30.1.6497-5fc2e0894-x86_64_DSM7), the directions said it would create the PlexMediaServer user and then fail, but instead it just succeeded after a pretty short time (a minute or so).
  • Despite the above, the server wasn’t accessible launching from my account on the plext.tv web site.
  • I then proceeded with the next step of adding the appropriate permissions on the Plex folder for the PlexMediaServer user (which had been created).
  • This took a while, but when done, I ran the installer again. Once again it said it succeeded after about a minute (much faster than was implied by the directions).
  • After this, I couldn’t get in again through my account on plex.tv which didn’t work (it showed the server as offline/not-available).
  • This time I also tried from the package center on Synology-- the first time I did this it asked me to “login” using my Synology account which I did and then it went to a screen that said “Not authorized - You do not have access to this server”. Now when I try to open from the package center I just get the above error message.

Any thoughts on how to debug what went wrong and try to fix things?

If you followed them exactly, it would be working

IF

  1. You still have ‘Plex / Library / Application Support / Plex Media Server’

  2. And it still has the files and folders.

AND

  1. PlexMediaServer has FULL CONTROL of the Plex shared folder
  2. These permissions were “Apply to this folder , sub-folders, and files” as you assigned them ( critical step )

THEN

Uninstall the package with the ERASE :fire: option
( You want the PlexMediaServer shared folder completely empty )

AND LASTLY

  1. Open Package Center
  2. Search for Plex in Package Center
  3. It should offer to install PMS 1.29.2.6364-7000 for your machine
  4. Install it.

Installation & Migration should begin immediately.

There will be no interaction.

It will sit at “Installing.” as it moves all the files

You can monitor its progress –

  1. Open a new tab to the Syno
  2. Open the Plex shared folder
  3. Open “Migration.log” in the Synology Text Editor app.

DON’T CLOSE THE WINDOW

DON’T INTERRUPT THE INSTALL

How long??

Migration of your metadata from Plex → PlexMediaServer needs about 3 minutes for each 1000 items you have indexex in PMS .. BE PATIENT

Okay, followed your steps and it is taking a long time spinning at “Installing” this time, which is a good sign.

I can’t find any “Migration.log” in the Plex shared folder, though:

FWIW, I did follow the directions exactly, but I used the 1.30.x package which I saw might have issues in a comment further up in this thread-- maybe that was it? Also, I checked the Plex folder and all the permissions were set for PlexMediaServer correctly (and recursively) and all the files were still there (which seems like a good sign that it could work this time.

Okay, it successfully finished and things are working correctly now. Thanks for your help!

Should I use Package Manager to update from now on (like you had me do to get this fixed) or continue to download the packages directly from Plex like I used to do under DSM 6?

Package manager Plex packages are very out of date thanks to Synology not posting current software. Instead, get updates by going to Plex/Settings/General and downloading as they appear. Those will come directly from the Plex site. And you can also just get them via browser from https://www.plex.tv/media-server-downloads/#plex-media-server

Synology just updated to PMS 1.29.2.6364.

It is 100% safe and stable to use this version as we now have a PMS installation in its Production configuration.

Hi again ChuckPA, update to the same issue. I was living life with the beta option from the package center until tonight. I logged into my NAS and saw an actual Plex update (1.29) in the package center. I clicked update & I am having the exact same “manually stopped” issue as before, EXCEPT I cannot go back to the beta, it’s gone. So at this point I have no running server and no idea how to fix it. Thoughts without losing everything or at least keep my current server alive.

@faufan

You don’t ever want to go back to beta.
It can’t be supported even if available. It was for DSM 7’s beta. DSM 7 is 7.1.1 now.

Using FileStation

  1. Open PlexMediaServer
  2. navigate in until you see “Logs”
  3. RIght-click “Logs” → “Compress to Logs.zip”
  4. Download the ZIP file
  5. Attach here

ChuckPa,

Just curious… do you know if the Synology Package Center will be updated regularly now or should I/we still follow the update channel?

I’m not sure if “…we now have a PMS installation in its Production configuration” means these updates will be more regular than they were.

Thanks in advance!

@Spookydude

I hope updates will be regular. I’ll do my best to keep following up on things with them.

:open_mouth: you mean you think my old one is there?
