Correct.
Hi there! So I just attempted to upgrade from DSM 6 to 7. I followed the instructions as I understood them, but the Plex installation is not seeing my existing Plex folder and is not upgrading; I am simply getting a clean Plex installation.
Steps I took are as follows:
Uninstalled Plex under DSM 6; did not delete or modify the existing Plex share folder.
Set idle timer to 65535 minutes
Rebooted DSM
Installed DSM 7
Installed DSM and package updates
Rebooted.
Installed PlexMediaServer-1.31.0 - It finished really quickly and I did not get the error about PlexMediaServer not having access to the Plex folder.
Plex appeared to be a clean install.
I then assigned the custom full permissions for the Plex share to the PlexMediaServer User.
I uninstalled PMS
Re-installed PMS
Still seeing a clean install.
Have I missed a step? How do I recover the prior Plex database/media? The share is still present and intact as near as I can tell.
Thanks in advance!
Uninstall the existing DSM 7 server package with the ERASE option
It will not migrate DSM 6 if an active DSM 7 server exists.
Did you assign full control to “This folder, subfolders and files” ?
If you don’t remember this, do it now using FileStation else your server migration will fail.
When you install again. It will see and start checking then install if FULL CONTROL permissions are assigned.
Thanks for your response! Yes, I did assign to the folder, subfolder and files. So full control is definitely assigned. I am proceeding with the process you have described. Will update once complete.
Back in business. Thanks very much!
The installer looks for the existence of a PMS install every time.
If it finds it in Plex – with nothing in PlexMediaServer — It tries to migrate.
For you, it couldn’t see into the Plex shared folder and find “Preferences.xml” so it thought it was a fresh install.
When you uninstalled and erased then double checked the permissions, it could then see Preferences.xml and away it went.
Still haven’t tried the switch, but now I’m wondering. If we uninstall pms on dsm 6 do we use the erase option? We want to keep the old Plex folder for migration so I assume erase would delete that folder wouldn’t it?
When Uninstalling PMS on DSM 6 –
- There is no “ERASE” button . (There are no menus)
- You want the “Plex” shared folder to be COMPLETELY intact.
Hi there, having issue where I was running a Plex Beta on my Synology Nas DS1821 perfectly fine. Then in Package Centre there was update so did that to replace it with a Plex media server running 1.29.2.6364-7000.
Now when I go to plex my server is unreachable, not sure what to do?
Any ideas how to go back to Plex Beta version?
Thanks steve
Hey @ChuckPa
i want to update my Synology from DSM 6 to 7
Is it better to migrate from 6 to DSM 7.1.1 or wait for 7.2?
PS: is this still the latest manual?
When you upgrade from 1.21.0.3744 (the DSM 7.0 beta package) to current production 1.29.2.6364, there is a LOT of work to do.
You only need to be patient.
- Don’t interrupt it
- Don’t restart the NAS
Give it time to complete:
– It’s moving your PMS server data
– It’s upgrading the database schema
Depending on size, it might take several hours or maybe even most of a day.
There’s no way or point now to go back.
– 1.21.0.3744 can’t be supported anymore
– Your data is in transition from old to final location.
If it’s still running (Resource Manager shows “PlexMediaServer” username as having active processes) be patient.
You can always make a ZIP of the “Logs” directory under “PlexMediaServer/AppData/Plex Media Server/Logs” and attach it here.
Thanks for the info but I have uninstalled and installed a few times on my Synology. I’ve left it to run overnight still unavailable but now seems to made another server on one of my reinstalled.
Below is logs that I think are collect for you to take a look at.
Thanks steve
I didnt realize this was a process that would take this long and have managed to both stop and reinstall Plex a few times now.
I currently have Plex running on DSM7 but all my libraries are “unavailable”. Am I screwed for interrupting the process? Am I doing something wrong?
This is my resource manager:
This is how my libraries look:
Open Plex/web
Go to Settings → (upper left corner) Authorized Devices → Server (dropdown)
You have two servers with the same name (one from the previously wiped installation)
REMOVE the older one.
Now restart the browser (Control F5 keys) and restart the apps.
Now you’ll see the correct, current, server
You have two servers: DS1621xs and DS1621xs+
They appear to have been installed within a few hours of each other on the same NAS
(you deleted one?)
Upgrading PMS from DSM 6 (Plex shared folder) can take, in extreme cases, weeks to complete the migration due to the speed of the NAS.
All the instructions I’ve posted in our FAQ make it clear to let it sit there uninterrupted.
It does not HANG. It trudges through until everything is done.
Interrupting it makes a mess and, depending on where interrupted, could damage the metadata beyond repair. (repair usually involves manual reconstruction by someone like myself who understands what’s involved)
How can I be of assistance?
Yea. I noticed I have two servers as well. Not sure how that happened but I think the DS1621xs one was created when I installed Plex on DSM7. Not sure though.
When selecting a library, the error message is DS1621xs+ is currently unavailable so I imagine that’s the original server that I am trying to recover.
Now that I have screwed up by stopping the process, what is the best way moving forward?
Is it certain to have made a mess? Looking at the resource manager screenshot, does it look like it’s doing what it’s supposed to? Is there a point to letting it try and migrate now?
Share with me what still exists in the Plex shared folder and also show me the contents of “Migration.log” which exists in the Plex shared folder.
That will tell me a lot about where we’re at.
Yes. that’s part of it.
at the top of the “Plex” shared folder, please look and see if you find “Migration.log”
That will tell me how much it did before being interrupted.
(In that file, I time stamp when each step starts and completes )
