Synology: DSM 7 Installation Archive -- Archived from main thread

Sorry for the miscommunication.

Upgraded recently to DSM 7.1.1-42962 Update 2, misread and thought it was DSM 7.2.

But I then updated the Plex Application to the most recent version in the Synology Package Center, which then broke my PMS instance.

Which version DID you have ? (DSM 7 - 1.21.0.3744 ?
or DSM 6 (with all your server data in the Plex shared folder ) ?

I believe that is the version I did previously have, DSM 7 - 1.21.0.3744

I typically keep it up to date

Good… we can fix this easily.

I am moving this to another thread. I will send you @mfav

Let’s keep this thread for DSM 7.2 only.

@mfav

Come over here please

When you were installing/ upgrading. It probably takes time.

Did you interrupt it ?

Thanks for the help @ChuckPa

I allowed the install to run to the end multiple times, using the “normal” and “claim token” installation, but I still am unable to claim my server.

I have the logs here if need be:
Logs.zip (2.7 MB)

The “claim token” install shows that it correctly matches/claims my Plex Username, but I am unable to view my libraries when connecting to the web interface.

Thank you.

Found it right away.

Networking / DNS isn’t able get out to the internet and find Plex.tv

Network cable / Network interface configuration problem?

Feb 01, 2023 12:41:54.751 [0x7f7f9fd82b38] WARN - [HttpClient/HCl#7] HTTP error requesting GET https://plex.tv/api/photos/profile (6, Couldn’t resolve host name) (Could not resolve host: plex.tv)

If you have multiple adapters, Try to use the first one as the DEFAULT GATEWAY.
(it avoids tons of problems)

Going to attempt a network reset right now. Nothing else in my network is seeming to have issues and I am connecting remotely to the NAS from a separate network with no issues.

I did go with DHCP instead of static addressing to try and prevent DNS issues, but her is my new config.

is this ok?

Do you have two adapters on the NAS?

One at 192.168.1.4 ?
Other at 192.168.1.5 ?

This confuses a lot of programs – especially Plex.

Unless you have a specific need, the best is to “bond” them into one bigger adapter with the same IP address. Control Panel - Network - Network Interface - Create - Create Bond.

It will take 30seconds or so to reconfigure DSM but when it’s done,

  1. The Default address (192.168.1…4) will still be there.
  2. Both adapters will have become 1 bigger adapter – Bond0 (or Bond1)
  3. Networking now gets easier because there is only one path to the internet/

I did have them separate before but after disconnecting one of the cables like you suggested, I am now able to get through the setup process and it looks like I can now view stuff remotely!

Thanks for your help @ChuckPa, I am going to try the “Bond” connection to see if I can get that working.

You’re welcome. I have a Syno with 4 adapters. It’s a pain. I bonded all 4 and life got easier.

I’m not the expert that @ChuckPa is but why is the gateway of the second adapter set to the IP of the first?
On bonding, I tried that once and nothing worked. Preferred adapter can be set in Plex settings so I didn’t feel the need to pursue. Plex remote access doesn’t hold but I haven’t needed to use it

Hello. Same issue as matt_p949,
DSM 7.1.1-42962 update 3
Plex media server version: 1.29.2.6364-7000

I ran this script, renamed appdata folder. Ran second script.
Still server not showing up.

EDIT: Followed this guide below, especially Step 6. Also backed up and deleted Plex folder which migrated it.
PLEX migration with DSM 7

Good Morning @ChuckPa ! The power has been out here for a little while, no access to the forum here.

I’m not a Plex expert, so I’m a bit lost how to get my failed migration/upgrade from several days ago, up and running again successfully.

Like @mfav I am pretty reliable in keeping my PMS always updated.

I was previously on DSM 6.2.3-25426 Update 3 with most current PMS installed.
I then upgraded to DSM 7.1.1-42962 Update 1, where I am not.

The Synology Package center indicated that a couple of packages needed to be repaired/updated, PMS being on of them, so I allow.

Given their packages are usually not the most recent ones, I went to the Plex.tv and downloaded the most current, and installed.

Started it for the first time, it seemed all was going well, I let it finish, as far as I know. In the end, I could see my libraries, but couldn’t connect, and they all had :warning:.

I un-installed the current DSM7/PMS software, restarted the box and then tried to re-install the PMS, but it’s no bueno, maybe even a bit worse.

My Plex/Library/Application Support/Plex Media Server folder is 7.32GB in size
My PlexMediaServer/AppData/Plex Media Server folder is only 8.2MB in size

So it seems the migration failed.

I can still see in homes/plex all of my libraries are in tact.

This is about the extent of my skillset with this currently…but happy to get you whatever other info you might need to understand this/my failure so we can hopefully get it back up and running.

Oh yes, I can also see all of my “friends” accounts, just obviously no one currently has access to anything.

Help Please :innocent:

Thank You

This is the cause of the failure.

The changes (Permission changes because username changed) cannot be handled automatically by package center.

At this point.

  1. Uninstall the DSM 7 package and use the ERASE option (makes “PlexMediaServer” empty)

  2. You will want to install 1.29.2 from Package Center.

  3. Using this FAQ, scroll down to scenario 2.

  • You will want to confirm FULL CONTROL of This folder, sub-folders and files belong to PlexMediaServer for everything in the “Plex” shared folder.
  • As soon as you accomplish this, The DSM 7 package installer will automatically do the rest for you. DO NOT INTERRUPT IT.
    – File: Plex/Migration.log will allow you to track progress of the upgrade migration
    – “Cleaning Completed” means it’s done.

Thanks @ChuckPa! Got it going in the end, I appreciate your assistance. I do not need the “Plex” user anymore right, nor does that user need access to any folders, it’s all the “PlexMediaServer” system account, yes?

Correct. On DSM 7 systems, the user Plex and the Plex shared folder are not used by Plex Media Server. They can be deleted or re-used for other purposes.

Hey sorry if it has been answered already but I’m a bit anxious to upgrade my dam from 6.2.4 to 7.0.

I have to programs besides docker that are mandatory to migrate and pms is one of them.

At this stage, I have pms 1.30 installed. What will happen if I just upgrade to dsm 7 now? Will it brake pms and if so, is there anything I can do in advance (permissions for folders, create another user, etc) so it works or do I have to look forward to a new install?

Can I somehow export my settings so I can easily restore Pms after a new installation?

@7de8

Read: FAQ 27 - Migrating an existing PMS from DSM 6 to DSM 7

Read: Installation & Setup of Plex Media Server on Synology

Before updating to DSM 7:
a) Uninstall Plex Media Server
b) Do not delete the Plex shared folder, which hold metadata, the database, etc.

After updating to DSM 7
a) Synology Control Panel → Security → Logout Timer = 65535.
Installing Plex may exceed the default value. You can change it back to a realistic value after the installation is complete.
b) Install Plex Media Server.
Pay close attention to the messages regarding file permissions, as mentioned in FAQ 27 and Installation & Setup documents.
As mentioned in the FAQ, depending on the amount of media, it may take some time to migrate to the new version of Plex Media Server (1 minute per 1000 items). Let the installation run. Do not interrupt it.

If the migration is successful, the information in /Plex will be moved to /PlexMediaServer, and a migration log file will be in /Plex.

@FordGuy61

Thank you!

Are all my settings stored in the shared folder too? So keeping that folder I can uninstall and reinstall pms without worrying to have to set it up from scratch?
