What’s the possibility of the next Beta nuking it? Generally should be ok for the rest of the Betas?
This sounds like nothing you had ever transferred over.
If you’re content building up the new DSM 7-based server then you can do what you want with the Plex shared folder, including delete it.
On DSM 7 - The shared folder we use is “PlexMediaServer”
On DSM 6 - The shared folder we use is “Plex”
DSM 7 forced us to change the Application name, User name, and shared folder name (the whole support mechanism was rewritten from the ground up to be DSM 7 compliant).
This is why everything has the common name “PlexMediaServer”.
relevance here ?
NOTE: I fixed this by following this post: https://forums.plex.tv/t/synology-dsm-7-0-release-plex-installation-not-operational-issues/719845/4030
I am consolidating posts here.
=================================
FIRST POST:
I am not sure where to begin on troubleshooting the failed migration.
I upgraded from 6.2.4-25556 → 7.0.1-42218 → 7.1.1-42962 Update 4.
I uninstalled Plex before starting upgrade from 6.2.4. Did not reinstall until 7.1.1. I was going from Plex 1.30.0.6442-5070ad484 to 1.31.3.6868-28fc46b27.
On first run of Plex installer, it created the PlexMediaServer user. I gave it Read/Write to the old Plex directory and the Downloads directory (where I have my media). Rebooted the NAS. Started Plex and it was at the create a new server screen. This is where I may have screwed up. I created a “new” server with the same name as the old one. I can’t seem to claim the old one.
Looking in the \Plex directory, I saw no migration.log. Changing perms on the folders was nearly instantaneous. Media files all still exist, but I cannot get the old server to load and do not know where to start to get that server with all the libraries and watched metadata (along with a lot of collections and other organization) back.
So, where do I start. I do NOT want to start from scratch if it is at all possible to get the old server to load. Thanks in advance for any help and guidance.

SECOND POST:
I have been looking at this post and am starting on this, but do not expect it to work as it thinks there is a different Plex server there. I don’t know how to get back to the original one is my issue.

THIRD POST:
Also, I apparently was not smart enough to backup the \Plex directory first. That would have been a smart thing to do. I was not smart.
=================================
FIX:
- Follow the advice on the link above.
- I believe my issue was that I did not give the PlexMediaServer user Full Control on the \Plex folder. I only gave it Read/Write per the instructions on the installation package. I should have followed Chuck’s instructions posted here on the forum instead.
- Backups are good. Not having backups (can be) very bad.
I’m glad you figured it out.
In your excitement to finally upgrade, you did miss the information in the installer’s text popups
I think you missed this error message where it does say Full Control.
https://global.discourse-cdn.com/plex/optimized/3X/b/c/bc6cc48107fddb36aec7a4d619fc9c16f18f0aa1_2_690x638.png
For those who aren’t sure what Full Control means, under 'custom, it’s this display:
I never got that pop-up. Mine proceeded and looked like it had completed successfully, but had not done the important. It is possible I missed it, but mine installed on the first run and succeeded. I will I would have taken screenshots of it for you. Hopefully my situation is a one-off and having the ability to re-run the installation and have a successful import means that it isn’t a serious issue if it happens to someone else.
If you never got the popup that means, somewhere along the way, you had manually set the permissions of the Plex shared folder.
You didn’t get the popup because it couldn’t see inside the Plex shared folder.
If it could have seen in there, you’d have immediately gotten that popup.
In those cases where it doesn’t see a Plex shared folder (permissions blocked or non-existent), it assumes there is nothing there and advances to creating a new DSM 7 server in the “PlexMediaServer” shared folder.
In DSM 6, for all versions from 1.19.4 and above, I had it silently set the permissions to allow reading by the future DSM 7 system. (part of my preparation for 1.21.0 where it needs Full Control)
That makes sense @ChuckPa. I am sure I messed with permissions at some point. It also is logical for the script to act the way it does.
Any news on compatibility of Synology DSM 7.2 Beta? ChuckPa’s post not to install Plex on DS 7.2 from Feb 1st is already a while ago.
I posted somewhere …
perfectly OK to upgrade to DSM 7.2
Hello,
Forgive me if I’m in the wrong place!
Hi Everyone and thank you for your time. I have a huge issue with my plex server and I can’t find my way out of it.
I run plex on a synology ds418 play.
Today I opened up the windows Plex client and it said Plex was unavailable. I logged onto the server and saw that Plex was running. I rebooted the server and Synology indicated I needed an update. I updated to DSM 7.0-41890 and checked on plex. It said I need to repair Plex so i started the repair.
When the repair finished I started plex and it launched the initial setup process for setting up a new server. I cancelled out of it and rebooted the server again hoping I would get my original server back. After another reboot, plex just says the server is unavailable. My previously configured libraries are all listed on the left side but have yellow bangs. When I click on them they say the server is unavailable.
I found that it created a new server in place of the old one.
I added permissions to the folders to the new internal user.
Is there any way to “reactivate my old server”?
RUT ROH! Your “update” was an UPGRADE from DSM 6 to DSM 7
That’s a bag of hurt.
Because of current limits in what Synology allows us to do, you have to do the bulk of the permissions work.
I’ll get you started then you can CAREFULLY follow the FAQ I link below (contains screenshots)
- Uninstall the Plex DSM 7 app with ERASE (the red option)
- Go to Control Panel - Shared Folder - EDIT the Plex shared folder
- Permission tab
- Change ‘Local User’ to ‘System Internal User’ (it’s a dropdown)
- For PlexMediaServer, click ‘Custom’
- Give it all Admin, Read, and Write permission
- OK that
- Return to the previous page, Click “Apply to this folder, sub-folders, and files”
- Now click SAVE
- This will take time.
When it’s done, Now install the Plex DSM 7 app.
It will:
-
Confirm you got all the permissions set correctly. It will error if not and tell you what to do (be mindful of the popup at the end)
-
If everything is OK, it will sit at “Installing”.
– It will sit here while it takes every Plex file (all your metadata) from the DSM 6 installation and moves it to the DSM 7 storage (new shared folder ‘PlexMediaServer’)
– Don’t migrate away from the screen else you’ll miss any error messages -
In a separate tab, open the syno desktop again.
– Look in the Plex shared folder ‘Migration.log’
– As the installation advances, it will write its progress there.
Here’s the how-to. LOOK at “Scenario 2”
Hello,
Using DS418 Play. I updated to DSM7 yesterday without following the instructions outlined in these threads, I wish I had thought to check first but I didn’t. I honestly didn’t think anything of it. It just said update and I did. The process seemed successful. There was a button to repair which I clicked and I received the attached message at the end. I screenshot it so I could refer back if needed as I didn’t have time to check at that time.
And now I can no longer access the server. I think the error message may have said something else earlier but now it is saying Synology Nas Plex is currently unavailable.
I have changed the permissions on the folder to read/write which didn’t work
I have changed the permissions on the folder to custom and read write and applied it to all sub folders and it didn’t work either.
I am applying these changes to the folder I store all my media in (for me this is called media) and to the Plex and the PlexMediaServer folder. I have also rebooted the Nas several times with no luck.
I’m really at a loss now. I wish I had known to follow these instructions before I installed the update.
Do you still have " Plex / Library / Application Support / Plex Media Server" ??
If you do -
- Uninstall the DSM 7 package with the ERASE option (it’s a roge configuration
- Now reinstall AND follow the instructions.
When you’ve got it working right, it will sit at “Installing” for a while until completed.
( The Plex share will be empty. It will contain a ‘Migration.log’ file showing you everything it did )
Thanks Chuck, I really appreciate the assistance you have supplied over the years in these forums. I can’t say how many times you’ve helped me.
When you say follow the instructions, which instructions are they?
EDIT: Yes still have the file path. Will uninstall and reinstall. Just looking for confirmation of which instructions you mean.
scroll up a few posts
Here’s the how-to. LOOK at “Scenario 2”
Thank you. I did think that was the instructions you meant but I wanted to check. Thanks heaps!
Hi Chuck, I’m sorry to be a pest but I followed the instructions and it didn’t work.
I no longer have the Plex / Library / Application Support / Plex Media Server. I have the migration log instead. I have granted the permissions as you outlined in your instructions but Plex still cannot find the server.
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.
post migration.log contents please.
Here you go.
