Synology NAS DSM 7 not showing on Plex Web app and no access to media on IOS app

PMS Version#:1.21.0.6654-7000
DSM: 7.1.1-42962 update 1
NAS: Synology DS1019+

Plex used to work on DSM6 but I haven’t managed to get it up and running since DSM 7 upgrade. I miss it! (Mainly want for Sonos but will cross that bridge once I 've got the the NAS media accessible up via the Plex apps.)

The story so far:
Have installed PMS from Plex website.
Have set read/write permissions on the shared folders where the media lives for user PlexMediaServer
Portforwarded 32400 (using IP address for NAS) (although this does give me an unsecure connection warning)

Issues:
Via the webapp - the NAS is not showing among authorised devices.
If I click “add media” it just takes me back to the download page for PMS which I already have installed.

On iOS - the NAS is listed under “More” but can’t see any of the media that sits in the shared folders on the NAS.

I am happy to do a clean install if necessary.

Any help hugely appreciated!

DSM 6 → DSM 7 is not a “transparent upgrade”. There’s a fair amount of work you need to do.

Most important:

Do you still have a Plex shared folder with "Plex / Library / Application Support / Plex Media Server " in it ?

If you do, AND you have PlexMediaServer/AppData/Plex Media Server – you have two partial installations… which needs unifying.

Thanks for this - I don’t have the Plex Shared Folder any more - from (vague) memory it was empty after the installation and I deleted it. I also deleted the Plex user. But I do have PlexMediaServer/AppData/Plex Media Server.

If it’s going to be more straightforward I’m happy to do a clean install?

This will be straight forward.

  1. Uninstall the app – Use the first radio button (Uninstall only - KEEP) option.
    – this saves all the existing metadata

  2. Reinstall the same SPK file again (or download from Package Center again)

  3. Instead of Normal Install —

  4. “New or Lost Servers” (Plex Claim Token method)

  5. Click “Get Plex Claim Token” hyperlink

  6. Browser opens a new tab with a Claim Token

  7. COPY it to the browser (click it)

  8. Return to the install tab

  9. PASTE the claim-xxxxxxxx into the box on the form.

  10. Click NEXT - NEXT - DONE and let it start installing

  11. It takes a few seconds longer than a normal installation
    – It’s getting new credentials and attaching them to your server

  12. When it’s completed, as confirmation of success, it’ll print your PlexUsername and Email address

  13. The server is now yours again.

  14. To ensure everything is ok, Open the server the FIRST time by its LAN IP address http://LAN.IP.of.Syno:32400/web

that’s it

thanks so much - all very clear and this has got me up and running. Just one last question if I may - when i use the LAN IP address as above it tells me that the connection is not secure. Just wanted to check that portforwarding to 32400 doesn’t open my NAS up to the world?

If you have port forwarding through your modem-router enabled to the Plex port (32400) then YES, you are open to the outside world.

https://app.plex.tv will initiate a secure connection (it’s https)

-where-

http://lan.ip.of.server will be plain http (no secure connection initiated)

If you’re on your LAN and the browser isn’t showing ‘secure’, does it really matter?
( Your LAN is protected by the modem/router’s firewall )

Thanks, so it sounds like I don’t need portforwarding for Plex? I read somewhere that I did but I’ve turned it off and everything still seems to work. So maybe I understood that wrong!

thanks again for getting me sorted!
