Synology NAS - Plex keeps on stopping

Server Version#: Version 1.19.4.2935

I am running Plex through a Synology NAS and have been for some time now with little / minor issues that have not been an issue. However from a few weeks ago, the PLEX server appears to keep stopping / crashing. I cannot find a reason for this, as I have not changed anything on the Synology NAS. I have uploaded a few more movie files to the NAS which have been read in by the plex server just fine.

As I say upto a couple of weeks ago this did not happen and plex has been working just fine.
Can anyone suggest what the problem might be, and a solution? I found a couple of similar queries on the forum, but not a solution.

Thanks

Thank very much, I’ll work through that lot and see how things improve.

Alex

Really sorry to appear dense, but I am struggling to find the same errors you found. I found the error relating to “Mad max fury road” in the log file “Plex Media Scanner Analysis” but cannot see any other errors you referred too similar to this one. I wanted to look through and make a list of the ones that are flagging errors so I can see if there was a common issue (all coded in the same period / before a certain date etc). and then re-code them and re-load as appropriate.
I have done a number of the other things you have suggested, but believe this will have the most significant impact.

Thanks

Alex

You are a star, got that going now, I’ll see the results in quite a number of hours!

Thanks Again
Alex

I am also having the same issue; While running the Plex Media Server app through Synology, the connection will break at random points in time. I am having difficulty troubleshooting the issue, will post a log below from the other day as an example.

Thanks so much in advance for any possible insight!

@billsherard

Logs say /volume1 is full on your NAS. Plex Media Server.log has 11000+ such lines.

Does a full volume typically result in an outage? If so I can double-check the volume. EDIT: Odd, Volume 1 seems to have 2.3TB of available space. Is it possible that, during video playback, the extra storage got utilized as cache?

It can. Plex has no room to create thumbnails, download metadata, cache for transcoding, etc.

To add to @trumpy81’s comments, you really, really need to sort out your libraries. Do not have Plex scanning items such as backups of Blu-ray discs or the recycle bin(see log entries below).

For the latter, an easy fix is to not enable the recycle bin in /volume1/Film and similar folders. You can change this in Control Panel → Shared Folder (screenshot below). Note that anything you delete from a share without a recycle bin will be deleted immediately from the NAS.

If you want to keep the recycle bin, then move your media to a sub-folder of the shared folder. For example:

/Media Server <-- Shared Folder with recycle bin enabled.
/#recycle <-- created by Synology. Files deleted from subfolders moved here.
/Movies <-- Plex Library points here
  /TV Shows
  /Concerts

Suggest you review the Installation & Setup of Plex Media Server on Synology and the Synology FAQ.

Straighten out your Plex libraries. That alone will increase the stability of your system. Afterwards, if you’re still experiencing No space left on device messages it will be easier to troubleshoot.

Synology DSM:

It is possible that misconfigured libraries can cause Plex to think the file system is full when it is not.

All the more reason to straighten out your libraries.

Interesting, I’ll give it a shot. Thanks so much for your help, I’ll keep that in mind moving forwards. If you don’t hear back from me, your solution probably did the trick. No news is good news, right?

Hello again,
Well as suggested I have been working through my video files with FFMEG and have identified the errors - you are in deed correct, there were quite a lot of the, for starters I have started isolating them away from Plex, and have been trying to re-code them, then re-run Ffmpeg to check for errors before re-loading them to the plex directory. However there are a few error types I cannot seem to get rid of when I re-code, primarily :
“[aac @ 000001ab12ad58c0] Number of bands (15) exceeds limit (11).
Error while decoding stream #0:1: Invalid data found when processing input”
Which would appear to relate to the sound element of the file. I have tried recoding from an AVI to an MP4, and then altering the bit-rate to force it to recode this element, but with no success. Any suggestions?

suggest encoding to regular AAC ; not AAC HE.
