Got it to work on my 1511+
test on
Shared Myplex account
Samsung Galaxy 1
Samsung Galaxy 2
Ipad 2
Windows 7 + Plex
Windows 7 + Myplex share
Had to uninstall my old plex. install and do two installs of beta 2. don´t know why it didn´t work the first time. i also had problem with it asked for authentication, but disappeared by first installing the old PMS and than installing as a upgrade.
myplex had some problem. with port and linking with myplex account, but with some port change and login/logout it all worked out at last.
@Nudgenudge, @Elan
My responses underlined.
I just put the beta on my 1010+ (DSM3.2) It took about 10 minutes to start the PMS server and made DSM unhappy. I got the new setup wizard “not funny, heart sinking moment”; was not able to view shared folders until PMS had finished running. Using top I saw a rm of a temp user running for the whole time my NAS was hung up.
“rm”? Okay, so it’s removing the old binary.
Yeah, you have to do this kind of stuff in order to remain “clean”. It’s improved in the new packages, but I have to remove legacy code.
The real time-waster is the “chown -R /volume1/Plex”, as I said above. Without that (or if it’s not completed), parts of the library may be missing.
That could be your issue. Anyway, I’ll try to keep the user between packages.
this was no doubt the issue. A warning before upgrading might help?
So far I have noticed:
- Myplex icon missing (from the management of the PMS http://nas:32400/manage -> preferences…
- Photo library is gone (I can read a photo section, but existing library is lost)
- Movies/TV and likely audio “recently added” is lost. The order is not obvious, but it’s old and new.
- was able to publish my server to my.plexapp.com
- did notice that from the Mac client (0.8.5.1) that I was able to add channels to the beta (0.9.5.1 PMS)
- looking forward to seeing the collections make it to the syno version
-the icon appeared after a bit. It’s fetched from the auto-update.
I didn’t ever see it updated until I removed plex and installed clean
- that could be the chown I talked above, which didn’t get to the photo library
likely
- dunno about that, more Elan’s turf.
@Elan - thoughts?
- that’s nice!
- you probably could. Not sure if they work though.
some work, some don’t - it’s positive progress.
- again, Elan’s turf.
@Elan - this gets my vote.
iPad client 1.1 still working.
Plex app Mac (0.9.3.4 and 0.9.5.1) connect but have issue playing quite a bit of content. Errors out of 0.9.3.4 are present i.e. “Error Could not determine input format.”, 0.9.5.1 you see the “Please wait” popup then it ignores you. TV shows having more issues than Movies.
DirectPlay is having issues on the mac client. I see the CPU spin up to 60% for one minute when starting a movie. When it starts (unless it fails) to play it drops back down to aprox 2-20% (normal for my system). I see this bahaviour on different version of clients.
GTV 2.1 (Plex for Android and Plex for GTV) - both have very similar issues as the Mac client. I have a PC client as well, but didn’t test. They also now see two versions of my NAS (I see two servers with the same name to connect to from the main screen)
- After removing Plex and reinstalling/scanning both TV shows and Movies all the slow starting and errors when launching have gone. Browsing movies and TV shows is very responsive, more so than the 0.9.3.5 version.
- I did notice that Beta1 has strange issues when I had my Plex server published (via myplex), GTV had a hard time connecting on the local LAN. With Beta2 that went away. Not sure if if you did anything that would effect this behaviour?
- Other items, bugs noticed. When searching for a movie/tv show on GTV. After entering title you hit enter, this adds a CR. If you hit search the CR invalidates the search “no results found for ‘string’.” followed by a “loading” prompt.
- I would also expect after entering the search item that the down arrow would take me to OK and not cancel.
That’s more for Elan. May be due to the chown issues.
I would vote to not remove bonjour, ability to see local content w/out using my.plexapp.com. I would not want to see my.plexapp.com be required to stream content in my own network.
Bonjour is still there. Removing it would be again Elan’s turf.
@Elan - I want to make sure I don’t have to use myplex to find my LAN connected PMS devices. I don’t have Internet access in the cabin. Can carry the syno though.
…nevermind.
Just a quick word:
- Beta2 seems to be nicely going on your machines (except for binary issues, don’t hesitate to create/find separate threads for those).
I gave Elan the scripts, so next releases will behave the same.
- for the fixes: actually, I spoke with Elan yesterday. The UTF-8 fix and a partial stacking fix are in a new Scanners.bundle, which auto-updates.
It’s not in the binary though; so you’ll have the issues after install, but when auto-update kicks in (hint: the myPlex icon should appear after it), you can scan special-character files/folders. I tried it yesterday on my install with “La Classe Américaine.mkv”, no issues during scanning/play.
Hopefully, this will help A LOT of people (UTF-8 was the biggest issue).
Is beta2 ready for prime time now then?
Waiting for a stable version before updating my 1511+ baby :-)
Thanks for your efforts.
I'd call it "ready for prime time". :D
I have no ETA on the official package, but the only change would be the inclusion of the Scanners.bundle fixes by "default" (no need to auto-update).
I have had 9.5.1beta2 running a few days on my ds1511+, had to install it a few times cause it wouldn’t run when clicked but now working. TY
My only issues so far are it is picking up Tv shows as movies for some reason? Shows like “Castle” and “Grimm” for example. I have the tv series in /media/series and movies in /media/movies.
Mmmh, so it wont trash my existing settings and watched items? <_< B)
Those will be okay.
That's the point of the betas, really; I changed so many things behind, I want to be sure the existing libraries survive the upgrade.
Went ahead and it seems ok :D B)
Thanks
I looked on the forums, and this didn’t seem to be covered, but one potential bug may be that when installing the package, when the installer asks which volume you wanted to install PMS on, if you choose anything but volume1, PMS will not run without tinkering. It seems that it installs PMS in volume1 anyway, despite in my case trying to install it in volume4 (my media volume). Not that it makes a huge difference, but I use volume1 as my TimeMachine volume, and I wasn’t sure if there would be some problems in the future if TimeMachine grows to a point that it squeezes out my Plex library.
On another note, when I first installed it, then uninstalled, tried to get it into the right volume, and repeated again, when I found this bug. I noticed that the media manager web app seemed to have changed. Now when I try to add media, I don’t have the + and - in the bottom left to add groups. I only have a icon panel in the Home screen from where I can add libraries/sources. Is that a change? Or am I going crazy? If it is a change, it seems to be different than the PMS for any other OS.
Thanks, and great work on this.
I am using the new scanner package and getting this error every now and then:
Error in Python: Running scanner:

For this part, not sure how I can do it "properly"; I have to specify a path (moreso keep the existing one for upgrade) for the Plex library.
You can change it manually though in 2 steps:
- create a Plex shared folder in the volume you want, and mv your library there (and make the "plex" user read/write ofc)
- edit the /etc/passwd file so that the "plex" user home is the new folder instead of /volume1/Plex
As long as you don't uninstall, and just upgrade, the folder and user preferences will be untouched.
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO I tested it with Korean characters goddammit!
I know you tried to make the UTF-8 stuff work when it was still "setlocale" and "locale", try returning those to POSIX maybe?
But it's not the same file than the fix in Scanners.bundle, so, strange.
Any idea what character can cause this? Or when it's failing?
- Beta2 installs successfully (thanks for this package!).
- iOS app does not start playing (-not local or remote. Read something about an timeout issue on linux?)
- Remote shared library functions properly but only using direct play.
- Transcoding does not start or seem to function at all - could it be related to the token issue on my.plexapp ?
I would say this is related to the issue that I mentioned earlier. Do you have a transcoding folder inside the "Plex" share? I didn't when I first installed beta1, and transcoding didn't work, but it did appear with beta2.
Where should this folder exactly be located? And its name?
edit
strange but true:
- reinstalled BETA2, no transcoding folder
- stopped + uninstalled PMS via package manager
- rm -R /volume1/Plex
- installed BETA1 (no transcoding folder)
- installed BETA2
- transcoding folder appeared.
- transoding to my iPhone failed - lots of “WARN - Transcode runner appears to have died.” messages, tried all qualities.
Just letting Nudgenudge know that I was able to successfully install beta v2 onto my RS3411xs without any error messages. Currently it is scanning my media and I will post on any issues found but so far I am just very happy to see that Nudgenudge found the right string to use in the installer to work with my Synology’s architecture.
Nudgenudge I just want to say thanks for doing this! Because of your efforts here I just dropped $600+ on a new DS411+II and I cant wait for delivery. Thank you!
Hi.. I am currently reinstalling everything because the PMS was not responding anymore at all.
I tried upgrading from Beta to Beta2 on my DS1511+. It looked like it took the upgrade but PMS was unresponsive even after reboot. I tried applying the Beta1 package with no luck so I uninstalled PMS and reinstalled with Beta2. That worked but I had to rebuild my library. That wasn’t too bad but a weird side effect was that myPlex had two servers registered to my account and then two TV categories showed up on my Plex clients. When I’d select the TV category from the old server it would lock up the client (Windows). After unregistering the server on myPlex everything was back to normal.
