Synology package thread

@ Nudgenudge Just got an DS712+, good to hear that is was a wise choice. It was important for me to run Plex on it that’s why I choose the 712+ and not de 212+.

Is it wise to wait for the new 9.5.1 PMS package? Or can I install the current version and update it later without trouble ?

What is the best device for my TV to use the PMS with?

Google TV, LG, Roku …

Currently using a HDX1000, searching for a device as client for the PMS on my DS712+.

Upgrading should go without trouble (I admit I should retry it before release, just to be 100% sure).

As for the client device, I don't know: I'm not for transcoding because the CPUs are not that great in NASes.
Basically, you should search on the clients' forum which ones transcodes, and for which formats (ATVs are H.264 only from what I got, but Google TVs seems to allow Direct Play (no transcoding) for lots of formats).

Right now, I'm looking at Google TVs to replace my Mac mini. Dunno if LG transcodes.
As for 720p, and in fact transcoding in general, I don't bother, mostly because I ripped everything with VOBSUBs not supported by the iOS app.
But I can totally understand having a smaller device under the TV. That's why the Google TV and its non-transcoding (for the moment. Darrin wants to add it, but I hope it keeps the decoding options besides it) is my "most plausible contender".

@ Nudgenudge thank you! So I can install now the current version and update it without any trouble, you'll test it?
Just wanna be sure, so it won't give me a headache updating later ;-) Think the new release is not far from now I guess, so thought maybe it was wise to wait.
Pretty new to this NAS stuff.

So you advice an device with transcoding?

Any word on this just got my ds1511+ and downloaded the older version Plex Media Server v0.9.3.5 but when installed it says 9.2.8?

Can the readynas version been installed?

It’s been updated to v0.9.5.1 for days?

Sorry kinda new to this nas/linux stuff and really excited to get v0.9.5.1 going on my server for myplex.

tia

Even though it says it’s 9.2.8, you have 9.3.5… It was just a string that wasn’t changed in that version.

The new v9.5 has not come to the Synology yet, but shouldn’t take much longer.

Folks anyone fancy eloping me getting PMS running on a DS3611xs?

just getting "Package not supported on platform of disk station’

suggestions?

thanks

I had today a problem with PMS where i installed it on the second volume and it wouldn’t start. After several attempts to reinstall PMS, i decided to remove my volumes and to start over. I now created the biggest volume first and installed then PMS on the first and it worked from the first attempt.

So good to know that you have to install PMS on the first volume…

Grtz,

Peter

Hi Guys.. my first post here.

Does anyway know how far away the new Synology package is from release?

I bought a Synology 1511+ last week and have installed the current version 9.3.5 but it has the special characters in folder/file name issue and I remember reading somewhere that a fix for this is going to be in the next release. I have alot of media and going through and renaming all of it isn't an option.

I really bought this NAS to run Plex with the increased storage capacity and functionality of my existing setup..... it looks very promising and does alot more than the hardware appliance does so I'm going to wait for this new release and hopefully these bugs are fixed.

Multi-replay:

I talked about it above; the binary should be supported, but the environment's name changed (for reasons I don't understand yet) to "bromolow".
You may need to unTAR/reTAR the package (search "bromolow" on this topic) to make the package compatible. I'll still try to find a way to make an unique package.

Whoops, I didn't think about it. Well, it's on the first volume since forever.
I could probably make it volume-independent, but it would take some time to achieve this. So, it'll probably remain /volume1.

The fix is not in the new version yet.
Here's the status as of now:
- I do have a binary version of 0.9.5.1. Before you all rage against me for keeping it to myself, it has both the stacking issue (where TV shows don't appear) and the UTF-8 issue (not the fix). It's better to wait for a fixed version, but if you really really want it, I can give it soon (see below).
- I didn't fully test the 0.9.3.5 -> 0.9.5.1 migration, since I was in the middle of changing the scripts, and it totally removed my Library. :( I'll try it fully tonight to be 100% sure. If it's okay, I may give a link to an unofficial 0.9.5.1 here.
- apart from a possible script change, UTF-8 and stacking are in Elan's hands.
Which are pretty full at the moment, what with all platforms reporting issues. :) So, no solid ETA for the official package.

First off, HUGE thanks to the developers. I think the beauty of Plex and these forums is that you can release software that has bugs and nevertheless people will be happy. If the remaining bugs in the 9.5.1 Syno package make the software completely unusable then I understand why it hasn’t been released. But if it is usable, I for one would love the opportunity to take it for a spin, bugs and all.

Okay, so there were a few issues with upgrading (mostly a missing chown).

All is set up now, so here is the beta.

!!!WARNING!!!This is a true beta. Which means it can screw up your Library (shouldn’t, but I’m playing it safe), doesn’t have the UTF-8 fix, and episodes with the same air date will be missing (just move the folder away, scan, back, rescan).

Now that the disclaimer is done, the link: LINK REMOVED, IT WAS INVALID

Also, for the DS3611xs users: I finally found in an obscure Synology document the correct syntax to add more architectures, so this package should work on your machines too!

I’m curious to see if it works, and also what are the transcoding capabilities. You have the hardware for it, people.

First of all, thank you for the beta package, looking forward to try it out :D
Would you please explain what's the issue that I quoted? I'm running the old version and I didn't notice any issue with TV Shows, was this an issue before or is it on this version only? What does it do exactly?

Upgrade is running on my DS712+ and it didn't srewed up my library so far ;)
Many thank for sharing this beta!!
If there are issues I will post them.

Is it possible to install MovieMeter.bundle on the server?
Any idea how :) Thnx!

I just put the beta on my 1010+ (DSM3.2) It took about 10 minutes to start the PMS server and made DSM unhappy. I got the new setup wizard “not funny, heart sinking moment”; was not able to view shared folders until PMS had finished running. Using top I saw a rm of a temp user running for the whole time my NAS was hung up.

So far I have noticed:

  • Myplex icon missing (from the management of the PMS http://nas:32400/manage -> preferences…
  • Photo library is gone (I can read a photo section, but existing library is lost)
  • Movies/TV and likely audio “recently added” is lost. The order is not obvious, but it’s old and new.
  • was able to publish my server to my.plexapp.com
  • did notice that from the Mac client (0.8.5.1) that I was able to add channels to the beta (0.9.5.1 PMS)
  • looking forward to seeing the collections make it to the syno version

    iPad client 1.1 still working.

Plex app Mac (0.9.3.4 and 0.9.5.1) connect but have issue playing quite a bit of content. Errors out of 0.9.3.4 are present i.e. “Error Could not determine input format.”, 0.9.5.1 you see the “Please wait” popup then it ignores you. TV shows having more issues than Movies.

DirectPlay is having issues on the mac client. I see the CPU spin up to 60% for one minute when starting a movie. When it starts (unless it fails) to play it drops back down to aprox 2-20% (normal for my system). I see this bahaviour on different version of clients.

GTV 2.1 (Plex for Android and Plex for GTV) - both have very similar issues as the Mac client. I have a PC client as well, but didn’t test. They also now see two versions of my NAS (I see two servers with the same name to connect to from the main screen)

I would vote to not remove bonjour, ability to see local content w/out using my.plexapp.com. I would not want to see my.plexapp.com be required to stream content in my own network.

I am very pleased to see the huge amount of work (multiple clients, ability to run PMS on so many platforms). Keep up the great work.

I am going to put the 0.9.3.5 server back on my system. Happy to try another build or answer further questions. Let me know.

Just ran the update on my DS1511+ and at the end of the process the DSM spit out “The operation failed. Please log into the DSM again and retry.” Though now when I connect to the PMS with my mac client I now see the On Deck section for the TV shows. After relogging back into the D1511+ it looks like everything is happy and it shows the new version number.

Yes I saw the same thing when I did the upgrade. I logged in/out and waited for aprox 10 minutes. PMS did start (see my earlier post for other errors I saw). Also note that going back to previous stable version of PMS (0.9.3.5) didn't fix my library issues. I am going to rescan with the beta and will update after it's done. I am going to skip music/photo, they take too long.

Thanks Nudgenudge for quick response… I guess knowing the fix isn’t in this release I might have to be prepared to organise my media using the file naming standards that are listed on the wiki.

Does anyone know any tools/scripts people have used to bulk edit folder and file names into supportable formats?

I really like what this thing is capable of… it takes me back to my original xbox modding days when I used to run all my media via xbmc from it’s earliest incarnations. I used to solder the 29 wire Enigma chips which were the original xbox 1 mods before things got easy with xodus and matrix.

I might have found something that can do the bulk editing, will give this a try over the coming days.

Okay, first: thanks for the feedback! It helps greatly seeing things I may have missed.

For example, the failures at installation are probably due to the new chown (I tried with a small movie library for my tests, not a full library. And those are big)

I may try to do another method (mainly, keeping the user. Not easy, since I can’t touch the 0.9.3.5 script), will keep you posted.

For bullclan’s questions (responses in bold):

To avoid clutter, I’ll post it here; the new beta version (with 90% less chown): http://dl.dropbox.com/u/27482871/PlexMediaServer-0.9.5.1-BETA_2.spk

I did the small change from work, but it should be straightforward.

Hey Nudgenudge!

Thought I would document my not-so-easy-experience just because it might help someone… Not complaining at all  Anyway:

Yesterday (BETA1):

  • Performed an upgrade but it failed. I got the message “The operation failed. Please log into the DSM again and retry.” or something of the sort. From this moment on, “http://IP_address:32400/manage” no longer worked.
  • Performed an unistall in the DSM as I wanted to be running the new version ‘as clean as possible’.
  • The Plex share was still there, so… Telnet to the unit and performed “rm -rf Plex” to get rid of the library folder.
  • Went to both the Users and Shares options in the Control Panel of the DSM. The user was not there, but the share was still there. Tried to delete it multiple times without sucess.
  • Went away and installed the BETA1 anyway. No problems with the install, but couldn’t get into the plex interface either.
  • The “Start-stop script” mentioned something wrong with the “Plex” folder, so I performed a chown.
  • Rebooted the unit and could finally log in to the interface, but could not play any videos from the Roku or iOS clients.
  • Went to sleep cause it was late (lol).

    Today:
  • Performed an upgrade to the BETA2 package. Simple as that.
  • Realised that the problems with streaming were gone. Also noticed that the “temp transcoding” folder was in the Plex share, which it wasn’t before, so videos were not playing because the temp folder was not there.
  • All good now
