Synology Plex Share Folder Name

Server Version#: 1.41.3.9314

More-so a question being new to Plex and Synology, and I’m not sure of the proper place to ask. Would it be possible to introduce a feature to be able to change the “PlexMediaServer” shared folder name in Synology? I like to keep things organized and a forced folder name isn’t ideal.

Why do you want to change it?

That folder is reserved for use by the Plex Media Server application.

You cannot place any of your media files anywhere in that folder.

The “PlexMediaServer” shared folder is a reserved shared folder which I created for PMS to run in. It’s where PMS keeps all the metadata.

By having this shared folder visible, it makes backup and repair of your server easier than if it were hidden.

I understand that the folder was previously hidden, but that’s not what I’m talking about.

Here’s just a snippet of some of my shares. The Plex config (not the media share I’ve created) stands out because I can’t change the name. It would just be nice to be able to specify the name of the share rather than forcing a static name.

If the name where changeable, how would the software know where to find the config files (where the folder name info is stored) ??

That’s like changing Plex’s internal port (32400) to something else without the ability to tell the apps which port to use.

If you don’t want to see it in FileStation, Turn off your access permissions to it.

It would be done by using a config file in one of the hidden folders that tell it which share to use, instead of being hard coded. Then if you want to get fancy, you update the integration with Synology to allow specifying it during install and being able to change it from the app center.

I know how it can be done. I’m the developer & maintainer of PMS packaging for Synology NAS systems.

At this point in Plex’s existence on Synology, it’s not possible to do was you ask.
I also know it’s a logistics / support nightmare

If you don’t want to see the shared folder:

  1. Create a normal (non-administrative) account for yourself.
  2. Do not give that username permission to the shared folder.
