There are no items in this folder

Server Version#:1.19.5.3112
Player Version#:

Something must have changed recently and I don’t know how to get around it.

In addition to adding movies to my video folder, I sometimes upload individual episodes for a full season of something I like in its own subfolder (i.e. Umbrella Academy Season 2).

Previously, things worked as expected and the indexer would see the new content and it would be available to view.

Now, however, I get the error message: “There are no items in this folder” when I use the Folders view on the menu. It sees the folders, but not their contents (there are 4 folders whose contents I’m having trouble accessing).

It get weirder: I took the subfolder Umbrella Academy Season 2 from Video and moved it to root. Having done that, I defined a new personal library for those videos and indexed them.

Again, the system sees the folders but not the content.

The File Manager in my Synology’s DSM verifies the existence of those videos in all cases, but I can’t get Plex to see them.

Can you help?

I thought so, too. But the permissions had been set as you described and it’s failing anyway.

The problem seems to be at the file level and the files should have inherited the permissions from the folder.

Is there an entry in some log that will show the system trying to read the contents of a folder and, when it fails to do so, why?

You were correct. The problem was permissions. Weird that Synology screws that up - worse, though, is the incorrect information the user sees without a clue that the data doesn’t match expectations.

Had this same issue, and your suggestion fixed it for me as well. Thanks much!

Had the same error message but a different fix… My Plex Media server Library was the wrong media type.

My library was listed as Movie rather than Other Videos… was watching a home movie mkv file.

I’m having a similar problem on my QNAP server. I have in my TV library Highlander. In the folder I have 6 seasons. “Highlander\Season 03\Highlander S0301 - The Samurai.mkv” for example. I get Season 1,2,5 and 6. Missing 3 and 4. I have removed them from the QNAP to an unmonitored drive and then scanned, cleaned the bundles and optimized the database several times. I’ve tried creating another location for it to scan just those shows. When in plex if I browse by folder I can see the Season folders but 3 and 4 are empty. I’ve even transcoded the showed to mp4. I’m using the same naming convention on the other seasons. I have tried changing that as well. I verified on TVDB they are the correct names. In the log after I add it and scan I do see

Scanning /share/CACHEDEV2_DATA/TV Library/Highlander/Season 03
Nov 17, 2020 22:15:31.002 [0x3ffa902ed50] DEBUG - Scanner: Processing directory /share/CACHEDEV2_DATA/TV Library/Highlander/Season 03 (parent: no)
Nov 17, 2020 22:15:31.013 [0x3ffa902ed50] DEBUG - Directory had 22 files, database had 0 files, can’t skip.

This is a new Plex install on a new NAS. This is the only show I have that’s doing this I believe. Permissions are the same on all my folders. I would appreciate any help.

Sorry, you need fix that naming.

It is not Season 0301,
It’s Season 03, Episode 01 (S03E01)

Doesn’t matter if it was working, it was marginal.
TheTVDB API will be changing and everyone must make certain to use the documented and supported standard naming format. – sorry

D!@#$%% You’re 100% right! I have no idea how I overlooked that. Thank you very much!

Great solution. Works for me to!

Create library Other videos and put series into it, not in library Movies That solution worked for me.
