Alright, I installed it. So far so good! It plays things! I’ll keep testing more when I have some time. So what are the chances this one will make it into an official release?
Edit: Well, now switching to “convert automatically” is broken, and autoplaying the next episode results in that one skipping and stopping every few seconds. Especially the automatic conversion not playing anymore is quite a bummer, guess my HVEC content is now unplayable. Sigh.
Here’s the client log. Starting an HEVC movie and then switching to “automatically converted” in the player, which produces a nondescript error message.
The other error is a bit more tedious to reproduce and I usually have the “play next” feature turned off anyways. I’m fine with that. Maybe if other users encounter the same issue we can try to produce a log for that.
The only difference I noticed is that the screen stays black and the circle spins. Before it became so milky and it rotated. Still it launches on even less series than before. I only tried 30 minutes of various things last night and this morning. All without success.
Currently I’m using that test build 8.26.0.28838 sixones posted 12 days ago. It mostly works.for me, with the problems I described in my reply to that post.
But like everyone else I’m just waiting for this to really get fixed in an actual release. (I’d kinda like to turn auto-update for my apps on again without having to fear it all breaks again).
Though honestly I’m not optimistic anymore. It has been sooooo long now with multiple threads on the topic and so many users reporting the same problems. Nvidia Shield users appear to be seeing the same playback issues. And it’s not like these are some obscure features noone really needs. It’s THE core function of the the thing, simply playing videos! It’s baffling there’s no progress…
Thanks for the advice @DrKronos . That link from @sixones is no longer working. I’m trying the most recent beta on APKMirror ( 8.26.0.28833 ) to see if I can get that to install on my tv…keep getting a message at the end of the process “App Not Installed”.
It’s hard to believe that it’s not being supported very well, especially if you’ve paid for a Plex Pass. I might get in trouble for this but…what do you think about emby?
Yeah the links must not be available long. Other links provided by @sixones and other Plex employees are 404ing for me too.
Sounds like a lot of folks are recommending emby these days. Plex is obviously prioritizing development in other areas, which is their business call but screws over folks like us who are running into problems with basic functionality.
We have dedicated teams that work only on personal media content without working on any of the newer streaming content. However there’s a lot of devices with different problems and things take time to investigate and solve.
The links posted do expire as the files get deleted automatically over time.
Will try and post a build later today that I think might improve Sony TV support, this one is particularly tricky as the Sony TVs we test on and have access to work fine for us with all the content we throw at it.
As for the error, app not installed message that means you have tried to use the wrong architecture for your device. You most likely want to use the armv7 build, APK links are always available in our release notes forum threads for stable and beta releases (though beta links expire once a new major beta has been released).
I loaded up 8.27.0.29135-xxx this morning on my Sony 75X900F.
When playing videos, I was no longer able to select the subtitles from the icon on the lower left of the screen. I could however, access them from the playback setting from the 3dots on the right hand side of the screen.
I also still had one instance of the next episode not play, just sat there with the spinning wheel.
After that I tried to jump around bit more and it seemed okay.
I attempted to watch EP08 of a series I am watching an it would not start, spinning circle only. Plex Server activity window showed nothing. I tried EP07 which I had just successfully watched and then I tried EP09 and none of them would play. I then tried a movie which started playing. I stopped that and went back to EP08 but it still would not play. EP08 plays fine on my Samsung TV, the Web Player, and on my Ipad.
And also no option to select subtitles from lower left .
Can I revert back to 8.26.0.28838? That version was working okay for me.New Text Document (2).txt (4.7 MB)

I appreciate the additional context @sixones . Very heartening to hear you all have a dedicated team focused on personal media content! With a lack of information, it is easy to imagine worst-case-scenarios.
Thank you @sixones for the APK, it loaded fine. Things seem to be improved, although I’m still having a hard time resuming episodes that were previously started - from one particular TV Show. I’m wondering if it’s the files themselves from that particular show or season?
I have now also tested some things again. It has definitely improved. But still takes up to 15 seconds per episode until it starts, but it starts so far at least everything, but the time is much too long. On cell phones and the Shield, the maximum is 1-2 seconds. Think many do not wait so long and then think it does not work.
Up next, auto play next episode is working now thanks. I do have problems still when skipping ahead of backwards. Sometimes it will get stuck on the buffering wheel and not go any further. On some episodes when I play them, especially larger ones it just sits there forever trying to buffer. If I back out or change the quality to low (and then when it plays select original quality immediately) it will load most of the time. The main show I get this on is a 4.6GB MKV file.
