Yupp. That’s the same issue I’ve been running into. It’s only happening for season posters. Obviously this isn’t a Plex issue but figured I mention it. It looks like others have reported this over on the TVDB forum here - https://forums.thetvdb.com/viewtopic.php?f=122&t=60291. One of the admins on that thread stated he was forwarding it on but I haven’t seen it get added to their current issue status page yet - https://forums.thetvdb.com/viewtopic.php?f=122&t=60239.
Yes, I am having the same issue with the season posters. The two I have tested have the issue on the TVDB site as well with it stating “the requested content cannot be loaded” when trying to get a larger image. It pulls the smaller thumbnail that you can select but as there is no larger version to pull, you get a grey box if you select it.
What a pain, hopefully it is something that can get resolved soon
Permissions aren’t an issue for my problem. I can access the posters and season images fine from the TVDB website. My server doesn’t appear to be retrieving ANY images from TVDB (posters, seasons, episodes, backdrops or cast). It’s fetching the metadata fine though.
A little more testing I’ve found if I enable Fanart.tv and The Movie Database as agents but with lower priority, it retrieves the posters from those sites but doesn’t set them (I have to do that manually by editing the show).
Do I need to try anything at all before an update is pushed? I see that the newest plugin for Plex on freeNAS is still 1.18.1.1973, which is the one I still have, and I still have the same issues described in this thread.
I am still having issues with getting TV show cover art. Are you all set with logs from others or would additional logs help?
Info for all:
It has been discovered:
In TheTVDB upgrade, there are cases where entries previous defined as television, which were movies, do not match as television anymore.
In those cases, where IMDB defines them as “movie”, immediate match and full metadata is retrieved when placed in a Movie type library section.
This is applicable to those “For-TV” movie specials, etc. Such are truly movies and need be listed as such now.
Should clearing the cache and performing a full refresh cause existing posters to be removed before it finishes? I’m wondering if I should let the full refresh complete even though it appears it’s removing a huge chunk of existing posters. I just don’t want 90% of my library to end up without posters if it doesn’t work.
As an example, I’m having issues with new shows like Dollface, See, The Madalorian and old shows like Heartland, Mayday, Airwold, Alcatraz. Shows that are definitely TV shows. I can’t get any newly added shows to download images.
Should I create a new post for this issue?
How To:
- Stop Plex
- Clear the contents of the caches ( TheTVDB cache )
- Start Plex
- Perform Refresh All Metadata
Never do it with PMS running.
That is what I’m doing. I stop Plex, delete the contents of Caches, start plex and click ‘Refresh All Metadata’.
I’ve just started it again and I’ll let it finish (hopefully it won’t wipe out to many images). Once it’s done I’ll upload fresh logs.
Actual image storage is in the .bundle directories under Plex Media Server/Metadata.
These are only the operational caches which hold the downloaded images prior to being validated and transplanted into the Bundles.
Ok so my issue might be something else combined with this.
To recap, if I add a new show, the metadata get’s downloaded but no images do.
If I perform a full refresh, existing shows that have complete posters, season posters and episode images appear to be removed. The metadata stays the same. It doesn’t happen for all shows though.
Edit: Just went through a random selection of about 20 folders in Plex Media Server\Metadata\TV Shows and they all contain a com.plexapp.agents.localmedia folder but no TVDB folders!
Edit2: Doing a find on the folders shows a handful that contain a com.plexapp.agents.thetvdb folder. Only a small fraction of them though. Seems maybe bundles haven’t been saving or updating with the TVDB information in the first place. But then I’m wondering where the original posters that the full refresh appears to be removing, were coming from?
Check your agent selection.
Do you have Personal Media / Local Media agent selected?
(Some folks enabled personal media & local media then pushed to the top).
Push Personal & Local media agents to the bottom
Local Media agent is enabled but it set below TheTVDB agent. As expected, the full refresh is deleting all my current posters…
Everything on that page had a poster before I started a full refresh.
Edit: Editing the information for any of those shows, shows that there are no posters available. Banner and Backgrounds are available.
Check the activity log. It should be showing that it’s still working.
If in doubt, look at the internet traffic a slow steady pull.
Ok, so even though it appears to remove it and continue on to the next show, it may reappear after the refresh is complete?
Activity log shows a ton of these flying by:
HTTP 500 response from GET http://127.0.0.1:43989/system/agents/media/get?guid=com%2Eplexapp%2Eagents%2Ethetvdb%3A%2F%2F247897%3Flang%3Den&mediaType=2&url=metadata%3A%2F%2Fart%2Fcom%2Eplexapp%2Eagents%2Ethetvdb_f6a91f9fb18b808b297268182fd1fe5df6a375c2
Error bringing media local (metadata://art/com.plexapp.agents.thetvdb_c12e19849a3ca15b5d51df3d2a36bce09fdc76fc).
That is correct. it will reappear.
Fingers crossed then. Thank you for the help ChuckPA. It’s much appreciated. I’ll let you know how it goes in a few hours.
Apologies if I’ve missed something, but was there ever a full write-up of what exactly happened? I’ve re-read the thread and unless I missed something, this issue seems to have been resolved, but I haven’t seen anyone mention a post stating it was, and more details about it. Please advise.
@ChuckPa Unfortunately my fingers weren’t crossed hard enough. After 5 hours, the refresh is complete and the activity log is quiet so I assume it’s done. None of the shows that lost their posters during the refresh have updated. Additionally, editing one and selecting “Posters” shows a blank list. Adding a new show to the library still won’t download ANY images relating to it.
I’ve attached my latest logs to see if anyone can figure out what has happened as I’m at a loss. All of this started with the TVDB issues and the 2058 Plex update fixed the SSLv3 problems in the log so this appears to be something else related to either the TVDB or the 2058 update.

Edit: I’ve started a refresh on my movies library and no posters have disappeared so it’s definitely related to something with the TVDB (I assume it’s just not getting a list of images from TVDB for some reason).
Edit2: I’ve just noticed that new movies aren’t getting their posters set either! The posters are available in the list and upon selecting one it updates but prior to update 2058 the poster was set automatically.
