Time Shifting sometimes works, sometimes doesn't

I cannot seem to figure out a rhyme or reason why time shifting sometimes works, and sometimes doesn’t. I’ve tried on multiple clients (Plex Web, Plex Media Player, LG Smart TV, Plex for Android). I use the android client primarily. I get the option to “Watch from Start” or “Watch live” and no matter what I select, it starts playing live and cannot go back to beginning of recording.

So far I have not been able to time shift on all four pre-season football games. But every time I record Price is Right during the day, time shifting works on all the clients.

Anybody else seeing this or having similar problems. I can duplicate and provide logs if needed.

I should note I’m using the latest version of PMS 1.13.6 and the latest version of all clients mentioned above.

Hey pbenzschawel, are you only seeing this with recordings that are currently in progress, or are you not able to ‘trick play’ (FF/RW) these recordings once they’ve completed either?

Thank you for the quick response. I am indeed only having issues with recordings in progress. I have no issues once the recordings are completed and added to my library.

I messed around with it some more and may have come up with some more information. (Tested on latest Android Client) So when i’m at home, on WIFI, time shifting appears to work for every active recording. When I switch to 4G or remote WIFI, and try and playback the same active recordings, I cannot timeshift. Taking it one step further, If I turn off streaming brain, timeshifting again works on those same active recordings over 4G or remote WIFI! So based on that, I believe streaming brain could be the culprit.

Let me know if you want me to replicate and generate some logs. Also let me know if you want client logs, server logs, or both… Thank you again!

Perfect, I just wanted to make sure that the issue you’re seeing is the same as the one we’re already tracking. Pretty easy to reproduce so I don’t think we’ll require any logs, but I definitely appreciate the offer! It’s on deck and should be looked at soon.

Hi there, I’m observing something similar.

I’m recording the Emmy Awards right now, so it’s eventually going to be 3+ hours. I started watching it around an hour after it started so I could skip commercials as I went. This worked correctly at first, but eventually once the recording got long enough, I cannot skip back early enough in the recording while the recording is still happening.

For example, it was 7:30PM local time and I wanted to skip back to something which happened around 5:50PM local time. But the furthest I could go back was around 6:05PM in the recording.

This happens pretty regularly for long recordings, especially things like award shows at sports.

@cire12 any updates? I’m running PMS 1.13 and Plex for android 7.7 and still cannot time shift remotely with streaming brain enabled.

If I disable streaming brain, my live TV direct plays (don’t have the required upload speed at home to support that) regardless what bandwidth limitations I set in the app.

EDIT,

I’ve used “limit cellular data” set to 1.5 mbps and I couldn’t time shift.

Once I changed “remote streaming” to 1.5 mbps, time shifting worked for 1080i and 720p content, however would not work for 480i. If I turned it down to 720kbps, time shifting would work for 480i.

Really hoping this gets fixed soon as it is one of the last major issues I’ve been having with plex on android.
