Timeout issues on Samsung (Tizen) App

Hi,

For about 2 days I can no longer watch any video on my Samsung TV. The stream from the Plex Server does not initiate, Instead, now I get a

Playback Error

An unexpected playback problem has occurred

From the looks of the logs, it’s that there is a timeout. It seems this timeout could be increased in order to get the functionality back.

Would be happy for any advice

Thanks!

I could only manage to fix this issue by forcing subtitles.

That doesn’t do the trick here.

It was working a couple of days ago. The web client and plex app are working fine. macOS app fine, iPhone apps. The TV fails immediately. Regardless of the file.

This would mean the Samsung App was updated and is broken now.

edit: must be one of these releases Plex for Samsung (2016+ 4K/UHD televisions) - #59 by sLumpy

I agree that it is indeed broken but I just checked on my q80 and forcing subtitles by selecting english in the plex app made my media play again. Try it for yourself.

You are right. I was forcing subs on a personal video before, and there simply were none. Forcing subs helped me to get to play those media with subtitles. Of course, that excludes podcasts.

Maybe @sLumpy can give us some guidance on this

I’m not sure what the issue is, and I’m unable to reproduce the problem on my end. Could you send me the full logs, in addition to the xml of a sample file that’s having issues? It’s possible it’s related to the cert issues making its rounds today, but doesn’t seem likely to me. We might as well rule it out though, so if you could try making sure your server is set to Preferred for secure connections (if it’s not already, or disabled) in your server’s network settings, and then make sure the TV is set to prefer insecure connections.

So I think I have found the underlying problem, which is not something a user can fix
Since allowing unsafe connections seems to solve the issue universally, it must have to do something with encryption
I just came across an article about a large amount of Let’s Encrypt certificates expiring on the 30th of September, which has troubled a lot of companies
And Let’s Encrypt just so happens to be the supplier of certificates for Plex as well
Still, it is weird that some files do work on a safe connection, and some don’t, but my guess is that the issue is caused by the expired Let’s Encrypt certificates
So let’s hope Plex manages to fix that issue soon

I have disabled encryption on the Plex server and the app on the Samsung TV started working.

Videos show etc… Good workaround

Some embedded or older devices may need the new certificate chain to continue to work somehow. They don’t find it on the system.

I had a similar issue with certain files that needed transcoding not playing back on my 2 year old Samsung TV. I just watched those files two days ago without issues. Thanks to this thread I was able to fix the issue by turning my settings for encrypted connections back to default, effectively disabling encryption. Hopefully encryption will be fixed at some point.

I’ve also toggled the insecure settings as per above to get things working - Thanks for the suggestion!

Hopefully Plex will be able to get this resolved as I’m not overly happy about having insecure remote connections to the server!!

Same Problem here. Client Version 5.25.3 and on Platform 2.4

Playback Error

An unexpected playback problem has occurred

Yea I’m having the same issue but with anything that has ASS subtitles.

Client version is 5.25.3 platform 5.5

Workaround is to force transcode the video from its original stream. I’ll try to get logs on it

The other workaround seems to be just changing the subtitle burn setting to image formats only and that seems to fix the issues.

Problem could be related to subtitle handling similar to the 30 sub stream dash video limit (imagine not having these issues in android tv)
Leaving it on “Automatic” was forcing the ASS subs to burn in when it didn’t need too

How do we do this? We are experiencing the same issue.

Ive attached the logs for the error im seeing - ive turned the logging on from the client on aswell.
inside the zip is the xml doc for the media & a “screen snip” of the issues from the plex web broswer logs.

@sLumpy - are the logs ive posted of any use ?
