I think this is the problem, that several people might have:
Basically the top shelf feature works. Some people have now observed that the top shelf suddenly disappears. The only solution to bring it back seems to be a new clean install of the app.
My observation is that the top shelf always disappears when i activate the Apple TV and browse the home screen while the plex server is offline.
Even if the Plex server is online the next time, the top shelf will not come back. You can only bring it back by reinstalling the app.
This seems to me to be the bug in the Plex App.

This might wind up being a hard one to pin down. For me, the top shelf never disappeared, it just stopped updating.
After updating to 7.3.1, the top shelf started updating again and has not stopped working with any new version or even the tvOS 14 update yesterday.
Very strange for sure, but I have noticed that other apps have problems with the top shelf as well. Even Netflix will stop working occasionally, but is usually fixed after being launched again.
nope - made no difference for me.
My top shelf isn’t working in tvOS 14 either. I think the issue was sporadic in the previous tvOS.
OK, so this is bizarre. I reinstalled the app as previously mentioned and it made no difference.
Well, this morning, it’s working - I think may have restarted my AppleTV yesterday, but not certain.
I am on tvOS14.
There is another workaround, although it is also temporary. Instead of deleting and reinstalling the app, I’ve been able to restore the top shelf by restoring the home screen defaults in the Plex app.
To do so, open the Plex app and navigate to the 3 vertical dots in the upper right (near the clock). Select it and then select Restore Defaults. Click Continue, then Continue again.
That fixes it “for a while”. I say for a while as I’ve yet to be able to determine what causes the top shelf to disappear again. Not sure if it is time, use of another app, the AppleTV going to sleep, etc.
I have 2 Apple TVs, 1 is the 4K model the other is the HD/gen 4 model, same problem on both.
I’ve had this problem for some time.
Have reinstalled the app a few times to fix it, but as people say it reoccurs after a little time, so had given up after the third time.

Been broken for months on all 4 of my Apple TV 4Ks.
Same issue. Started about two months ago. I have gone from TVOS 13 to 14.0.2 no change. On the current plex app 7.9 and server is current as well. No change. Tired of deleting it and reinstalling only yo have it stop again. Does it on both the AppleTV HDs and the 4K unit.
@Plex support. You have a bug! Please fix it or respond to the forum to at least acknowledge the issue.

Sadly that didn’t restore the top shelf on my devices. It seems only deleting and re-installing it does.
None of the solutions work really well. I have given up on it. Just wanted to keep bumping this post since.
Has this bug been acknowledged by the devs?

I don’t keep up with this community as much as I used to, so does anyone know if there’s a more formal way to raise this or escalate it when forums posts don’t get looked at? Or do we just keep yelling into the ether?

Oh great! I had my Top Shelf all working hunky-dory for months and then 7.10 (22174) auto-updated overnight and Top Shelf seems VERY broken again for me at least.
I’ve tried deleting the App and re-installing, and also re-setting Home Screen defaults, both of which had worked for me and others here to get it back at various times in the past, but this time no go.
What makes it more annoying is that I dabble on the Beta track as well, and it was broken there for the last couple of builds, which I duly reported to the feedback email address. Got no acknowledgement/answer, and here we are, release version out and still broken …
I suspect if I went back to an earlier Testflight 7.09 build it may magically work, but haven’t tested yet.
Can anyone confirm that it’s also broken for them in tvOS version 7.10?
@tom80H or whomever, any chance of getting some Plex Dev eyes on this and squash this bug once and for all?
